robert
I'd love to start doing deadlifts again but I'm a little worried about my lower back. I was doing them a year ago and my back snapped and has given me trouble off and on since then. It was hard to walk, sit, etc. for a couple of weeks but I've recovered well and now I run, play sports, lift and it's fine. I do a lot of work to strengthen my lower back and "core" in general. Hopefully I'll be able to get back to it soon! They were my favorite exercises to do at one time in my training, and I think they could be again. http://myspace-258.vo.llnwd.net/00859/85/24/859394258_m.gif
jonathan
Just start light and slowly work your way up. Don't rush it and don't compromise your form. Alteratively, do power cleans. They are really very good for developing your entire back, plus they are very good fun. At the moment I prefer them to deads (mainly cos I took a 6weeks hiatus from deads and now I'm shit at them! ) Jonathan
bronco
Im also not very good friend with the deadlifts since hurting my back with them. They just dont feel right anymore. Im thinking of starting doing some clean style deadlifts to see if they feel more comfortable, I have a feeling they might. If nothing else they should have a better carryover to cleans . And of course I second what jono said about starting light and working your way up .
Guest
Start light thats what I'm gonna do after a year off...as soon as I get back from Portland I'm gonna start lifting with my legs 3 days a week to get some strength back now that I'm a little lighter and I think if I don't do weights I can't do 12-15 reps with I shouldn't have to worry about hurting my back or bulking back up again. Jay
Whatever you do, pay attention to what your body is saying. Don't listen to the BS macho crap some lifters talk and try to "work through" the pain in your back. If it doesn't feel right, stop doing it. jonathan
Like Jay said - never work through back pain. I agree it's bollocks. Though I would say that most of us have been training for long enough that we know the difference between muscular ache and injury pain. robert
I'll be careful, I just miss the exercise. I'm going to a powerlifting event this weekend. My vegan friend is going for the state record in the deadlift, so hopefully he'll get it! I'm working on the lower back strength just to be somewhat normal again. I do lots of other lifts that are pretty powerful, so I won't totally miss deads, but still miss them.
wannalift
go sumo and use your legs more than your back to make a good deadlift. its all about leverage.
Crystal
Ya, sumo is much better for the back . If you are worried about form, wait until the vegan vacation to get some feedback .
Daywalker
When you do DL correct, they won't hurt your back, promise! The only thing that can hurt you is your ego. I know that very well - you think "just one more rep" or "i'll try 5kg more this time" and slacken just a bit on the form... DL build a strong back, and a strong back is less prone to injury. I disagree with big Jonathan on doing power cleans instead, in my opinion power cleans are a more dangerous exercise, because it uses more momentum. Don't get me wrong, i love cleans, it's a great exercise, for your back as well as for your power, i just wouldn't say it's better to do them than doing DLs when your back is still weak and maybe not fully healed. If you are worried about form, wait until the vegan vacation to get some feedback .Dito!
Gary
i know there are 2 different stances for deadlifting. i am a taller lankier guy with super long legs and conventional stance just hurts my back. is it ok if i just do sumo style or should i mix it up. sumo feels so much more natural and i noticed jonathan, who is way taller than i am does them this way in his vids. not that i will ever compete, but by chance that i do, is sumo style accepted?
