Damien
I'm new to this. I live out in the country, and nothing here caters to vegan or vegetarian customers. In fact, our only main grocery shop is a Wal-Mart. It's a very poor area. What I want to know is, some easy to prepare or prepared foods that a busy person can eat. I have found tons of recipes on the web, but nothing that I can easily make when I'm in a rush. Most of my food with have to be made from normal food, it's difficult to find certain brands and certain styles of some foods due to my area. I don't plan on making the transition from meat-eater to vegan suddenly, so I've already cut out any meat except poultry due to it's high protein rate, and I'm going to become vegetarian after studying this a bit more. I also need to know how neccessary are supplements? I don't believe in taking any kind of drug, and I know some supplemental pills contain certain drugs. I've also heard many horror stories about vegans and vegetarians losing hair, weight, or gaining various illnesses such as anemia. Are these true? and what are the best ways to prevent these things from happening to myself? I'm sure you've gotten these kinds of questions thousands of times before. Sorry if I overlooked a thread somewhere that would've helped.
CollegeB
Actually we've only got 2 people on the forum that report losing hair, and I still haven't lost weight after going vegan. The walmarts where i live sell tofu and things, i was at one in oklahoma that i dont think sold anything like that. The easiest meal i make is half a pound of tofu with peas marinated in a vinegarette I make. Pasta is fast too. Rice and beans with some frozen veggies is my standard. You could try to find some soy grits to have extra protein in dishes like that, just make sure to let it simmer with whatever you put it in. Peanut butter is great too. Are these true? and what are the best ways to prevent these things from happening to myself? I gained a lot of muscle on a meat free diet. I eat lots of beans, nuts, rice, tomatoes, avacodos, whole grain breads, and oatmeal. See for yourselfviewtopic.php?t=1455 I've lost hair too. But it has nothing to do with whether I eat meat or not, it's just male pattern baldness The Wal-Mart where I live has veggie burgers, soy dogs, beans, nuts, fruits, vegetables, grains, oatmeal, etc. Basically everything you could need. Freesia
Always produce. We are lucky there is some organic growers here. You can always get dried beans. Mail order, maybe?

Are these true? and what are the best ways to prevent these things from happening to myself?for what it's worth, i have been on a meat free diet for about 8 years now, and i have had long hair the entire time. i have hair down to my shoulders. never had a problem with anemia either, and i have never gone to great lengths to get any supplements or pills to make sure i get a certain type of vitaming in my diet. i get them all from my food. i think these are all just myths that meat eaters make to discourage people from going vegan. Odidnetne
You don't need poultry, you can do just fine on beans, lentils, black beans, etc. You'll start feeling better and better. Most people have planned meals and all that, but you'll be eating normally on whatever you want soon enough. Good luck with the transition. Guest
Surely there are local farmers in your area selling produce along the street or in markets...as for the chicken thing its worthless...so many things have lots of protein so that should never be a reason...alot of things vegan even have more protein than chicken and they are more easily digested as well...as for weight loss I went vegan at around 300lbs and I stayed that way on purpose so it was never an issue for me. Actually I took a bunch of non vegan supplements and shaked to keep my weight up there and when I went vegan I stopped and my weight didn't budge except when I wanted it to

But still, other people may come along and decide to cut all meat besides poultry.
pelicanAndrew
I dropped 8 lbs in 2 weeks. I tried to do that though. Cut calories for one of those weeks when i wasn't lifting and when i weighed myself, i was 226 instead of 234. However, if you pack in tons of calories, you wont lose any weight. No hair loss. I did grow a beard though. And i'm dreading my hair in a few months.
