dann
My intro: I met Robert at the Animal Rights 2006 conference (ever so briefly) and spoke to the representatives at the table and decided that the Vegan Bodybuilding group would be the perfect way for me to get back into the gym and back into shape. I used to work out regularly a few years back and was in the best shape of my life. I had a trainer that I paid for, which I think was honestly the primary drive that kept me showing up until I saw the great results that regular trips to the gym made to my body. I was hooked. Then, for some reason I fell off that wagon and got a li'l chubby (I kept eating the same, but wasn't hitting the gym). Shortly after that I realized the realities behind factory farming and slaughterhouses and knew that supporting those atrocities in any form was not for me and I lost all the gained fat and am now thin and healthy and have been that way for a while. I miss being stronger and am thrilled to have found such a forum to learn about building muscle mass while avoiding animal cruelty. Basically, it's back to the gym for me, but I could definitely use the support of others because I find it to be super easy for me to just not go. I've never had the drive that many body builders have and could definitely use some encouragement and maybe even a serious workout partner who shares my views on animal advocacy. I'm in the Chicago area and I work with Mercy For Animals here (and would LOVE to find vegan bodybuilders to help break stereotypes through our college and high school leafleting campaigns...if you are interested, hit me up). I have made my breakfasts raw and occasionally eat other meals raw and have seen that it really can affect my energy levels. Anyway, that's my introduction complete with a few aspirations. Not so exciting....but thanks for readin'!
robert
Welcome dann! Thanks for joining our group. It is awesome to meet people at events and inspire them to join our team of vegan athletes here on the forum. We have a rockin group, as I'm sure you'll discover. We do indeed have people in your area, and I hope some of them get involved in the work that you are doing out there. Thanks for all that you do for the animals. Guest
I'm stoked...I've been wanting to go to Chicago as a Vegan for a while. I was in Philly as a vegan and thats the only real major city(aka more than 3million people) I've spent more than a couple hours in as a vegan...I'd love to have a really super deep deep dish vegan pizza if there are any

pelicanAndrew
Yes!!! Someone else from illinois. Give me until next year and i'll be glad to show off some lifts to break stereotypes. I've been vegan for a few months now and i'm trying to hit a 300 lb bench, 400 lb squat, and 500 lb deadlift, sometimes known as athe 300/400/500 split. Hopefully i'll be able to hit that by next year. That'd be totally rad to set up some sort of exposition of vegan athletes in the area. And screw vegan pizza when you've got the best damn Lentil Burger i've had in my entire life at The Chicago Diner!!!. I've heard Soul Vegetarian is another amazing place. Really have to go there too. Chowpatti out right by where i live is the best indian food you'll ever have. Vegan friendly!!! I'm in Decatur right now for college but if i'm ever in chicago during either thanksgiving or winter break, i'll be sure to let you know.
dann
Soul Veg is amazing, you are correct. Karyn's is another one of my favorites. As far as breaking those stereotypes goes, just being there and being vegan outwardly (we'd probably incorporate it into our leafleting events) would be HUGE. You always hear the same things leafleting. I'd love to have a bunch of hearty guys and gals leafleting or speaking on campuses.

Guest
Good luck finding pizza and if you do...don't eat too much of that crap...I'm sure I'd have trouble avoiding it ***I think those numbers are skewed(for everyone that tries it)...unless your extemely tall or have injury issues dealing with squats...everyone on earth that can bench press 300lbs should be able to squat much more than 400lbs...just my two cents
pelicanAndrew
I'm going to try leafletting here and i'll make sure to contact you when i'm back by chicago. *** That's what i'm aiming for. If i get higher on any of those #s i wont fret.
Guest
Of course getting high on all numbers are great...but hopefully the squat goes up the same speed as the bench...

Guest
I'll definatly wanna go to the sofa exhibition, The Art Institute of Chicago, Floating World Gallery and maybe a hand crafts gallery...they've gotta have one. I'd also like to see Anish Kapoor's Cloud Gate sculpture and get a reflection photo of my ass on it...he's one of the few minimalist sculptors I like and I've been wanting to do this with his peice for years...surely not so nice but it'll be funny...are there any you would be interested in??? Or different types of art
dann
VeganPotter, I STILL haven't seen all of the Art Institute and I've been here for six years. I'm down with doing some of these things. I'll have to wait and see what my schedule allows come November.
