Kathryn
Today, I had a meeting for a committee I was on, and when the new committee chair sent me the announcement and said that lunch would be provided, I requested a vegan option, like a salad. She wrote back saying "no problem.' (You probably know where I'm going, but hang in there... ) When I got to the meeting room, there was a pile of subs with beef and chicken in, bags of potato chips and some huge cookies. Looking for a veggie sub, I saw something that may have been cheese, but looked like turkey or chicken slices. One woman suggested I just remove the chicken/turkey ), the b@$(!@& /new committee chair said that there was a veggie sub, while a third woman, after I said, it wasn't vegan, said 'Oh, well." Oh, well, indeed, if YOU'RE the one not provided for. The woman who suggested that I remove the whatever from a sandwich then pointed out that the chips were vegan, but I was a bit p. o'd. by then, so I said, "yes, but they aren't food" (a bit of a dig at the overweight @#(!@ chair whose buttons were straining on her jacket? Perhaps!) (I'm too annoyed to look up any more appropriately p o'd smilies, so feel free to add them!) After the (!@#! & new chair brought me a wee small bottle of mineral water, I decided not to sit around sipping it while other people ate, and went to my office in a nearby building to make some copies for tomorrow's classes, then came back when I decided they might be done consuming crap food. Flash to later... Near the end of the meeting, when somehow talk came down to junk email, I made a comment (that my collegues previously appreciated, but they have a (@#& sense of humor!) that I once got an spam email for not only viagra, but male enhancement pills and breast enhancement pills, so if I were a transitioning transexual, it would have been a great deal. The other committee members laughed, but I catch a very disapproving look on (!@#&@# chair's face, like she is mortally offended, or found me ing. Oh, well.... Later, back at my office, I check my email, see there is a reminder message from the (&!@#@)* chair (from before the meeting) and check it just to make sure there wasn't anything important in it....and the greeting says "Kathy". Now, I haven't been "Kathy" for several decades, never introduce myself as "Kathy" and most certainly never sign any messages as "Kathy." I find it disrespectful when some )*!#@#$@& just decides to call me that. Can you tell this is not a woman I want to see every again? Rant over...you may now return to your normal activities! FormicaLinoleum
This is slightly off-topic from your post, but I was reminded of it... I met with a woman in my building who sets up conflict resolution kind of Professional Development. That has little to do with the point of the story. I guess because she is in this kind of work, she gave me a brochure about a one-day Peacemaking conference organized by the local Friends school and a meeting house. There are all sorts of sessions on various aspects of peace work. Now, I generally like the (liberal) Quakers and appreciate their peace/pacifist work. I looked at the registration form out of curiousity and saw that lunch is provided. Registrants can choose their lunch... ham and cheese, turkey and something, or vegetarian. At first I was thinking about what if I registered, would I be able to write in vegan lunch. Then it just started to bother me more and more that this was a workshop entirely devoted to peace and they were going to provide dead animal for lunch! Isn't that rather hypocritical? Even though I do not intend to go, I thought about writing to them and pointing this out. If they are serious about peace, they should forego the animal products. Anyway, a little back on topic... I have told the people in my office that I am vegan but I don't think they get what that means (though I did explain it once, I guess that was not enough). We have pretty frequent lunch gatherings and I generally have to eat salad (sometimes dry). Good for you for being assertive. I need to be and re-explain what I do and don't eat. Honey
With respect to company meals, it's a hit and miss on this end (there are 250+ employees where I work). During the festive holiday parties (often held in nice hotels) most of meateaters are envious of the Vegan dish I receive during dinner. When it comes to company dinners served on-site, I am unable to eat anything they serve. They never think to accomodate veggies or vegans. One time they had Chinese food ~ every dish contained meat or seafood. Another time Italian ~ every dish contained dairy and the rice contained chicken broth (I could sense it!!!!) BLAH. CollegeB
Yeah formica there are a lot of peace and environmental folks who still eat dead animals. I wrote once "how can you talk about peace with a bloody steak in your mouth" it offended several people... Even Ralph Nader is no vegetarian. Some people really need to get consistent with their proclaimed values.

Some girl in the environmental club said that we could all get 1$ shirts at Wal-Mart in order to make shirts for the club. Being the new kid in the club i bit my tongue but i really want to call her a stupid bitch. Hypocricy like that irks me big time. The other sad thing is we have to burn gas to get our schools recycling to a recycling center. However, the whole Enviro club is all about eating organic.
