**Travel links** Save $$ on your trip to Oregon

If you're thinking of coming to VV07, now is the time to start looking for flights. The airlines have frequent price wars, so if you watch for them there are often exceptional deals to be had.

Here are a few links for cheap airfare:

http://www.travelocity.com

This is my personal favorite. Register on this site, add Portland to your fare watcher alerts, and travelocity will email you when the fare goes down. If your travel dates are flexible, you can save a bunch of cash. (Last year I flew round-trip to Connecticut from Houston for $115/person, as an example.)

http://www.expedia.com

Another site, which is very similar. I usually don't find anything that's a huge savings from travelocity, but it's worth looking at.

http://www.orbitz.com

Orbitz has a really cool search feature, and I haven't used it in a while but I believe you can set it up to notify you by email when the fare changes.

http://www.studentuniverse.com/

Cheap tickets for college students and faculty. That's at least one-fourth of us, it seems.

http://www.cheaptickets.com/

I haven't used this site, but it also appears to have a "price alerts" feature.

**note** For any of the above sites, after you've found a fare you like, be sure to check the same itinerary on that particular airline's website. It's often a few dollars cheaper, and most airlines offer bonus frequent flier miles for booking online.

http://www.hotwire.com

http://www.priceline.com

If you're OK with choosing your travel dates but not your flight times, hotwire and priceline can save some $$.

http://www.southwest.com

Travelocity, expedia, and most of the others don't search Southwest's database, as far as I can tell, so be sure to search here too.

Other modes of travel:

http://www.amtrak.com

Amtrak has a station in Portland.

http://www.greyhound.com

If you have a bit of free time, a bus can be a lot cheaper than flying and allow more nap time than driving.

If anyone has any personal favorites travel sites that I didn't mention... let me know and I'll add them to the list.

MVP.........MVP........MVP!

Hey,

Thanks for your help. A bunch of you are stepping up lately and assisting with this project, realizing that it is a group and team effort. And really the only way to make it happen without me going completely crazy like last year

Good stuff, keep it coming! Thanks to others too. TEAMwork Rules!

Prices change all the time throughout the year and vary from site to site. I do quite a bit of flying and traveling in general and I can get pretty cheap fares most of the time.

Once I got one for $200 from Oregon to London England !!!

And some for like $150 to go from Portland to AZ or UT or something like that.

No worries, we'll help you get a good price.

Lowest i've seen from chicago is about 380. Not bad. It's either that or i ride on a train for 2 days.

Train ride, that sounds fun. Lets get all the east coast people to meet in illinois and hop on a train the rest of the way together!

That would be awesome, always wanted a train ride.

That does sound totally sweet! Great idea. It will be a long train ride, but trains are pretty comfortable right? Much better than a bus, cheaper than a flight I assume?

Maybe there is a group rate for 6 or more, or something like that? I don't know, just an idea.

You can get your own cabin on the trains for groups. I just think it would be a cool experience to do once, then fly home or something.

There's beds and stuff so it should be comfortable.

The trip wouldn't be so long, they don't have to stop for anything really.

I'd like to do it.

Okay, I found $254, here's the catch:

I start at Philly, then get a layover in NYC, then go to Portland.

Now, here's the problem for those of you not up to date on your East Coast geography.

NYC is more east than Philadelphia, so I would be travelling out of the way.

Here's the other thing, NYC is about SEVENTY miles from Philly, so I would be on the first plane for approx. 10 - 15 minutes. I don't even think it's the money I want to save, it's the story of being on a flight for that short of a time.

I think I'm going to go for it just so I can tell the story of how I was up in the air from 6:45 to 6:55.

Haha, you should do it. When your friends and family ask what you're up to, it will be great to see the look on their face when you tell them "flying to new york city". They could hop in the car and beat you there.

Saving $$$ is good stuff. Besides trainhopping & hitch-hiking here are some other transportation options:

There are lots of ways to get rides, including several online ride sharing "boards" where you can offer, ask for or connect with someone offering rides. Many colleges & universities have rideboards, as do almost all local Craigslists. For example: http://www.pittsburgh.craigslist.org/rid/

Anouther option is doing an "automobile driveaway". There are a variety of companies but here's one I've used before: http://www.autodriveawaydc.com/carlist.html

Basically you have to possess a valid driver's license & pay a deposit that is refunded when you return the vehicle but you get to use the car for free. I've done this so let me know if you have any questions.

While making your way here from far away you may meet want to meet new friends &/or need someone to stay with: http://www.couchsurfing.com & http://www.hospitalityclub.org

And when you get to Portland, here's an excellent way to save $$$: http://www.chinookbook.net - they have all kinds of great coupons, including for veg places like People's Food Co-op, Blossuming Lotus, Proper Eats & The Daily Grind.
