Fruit Diet - Heart burn / Acid Reflux or loss of tolerance

Recommended Posts

I've been eating a lot more of fruits because I naturally find them appealing for - Flavor & Satisfaction.

Lately, thats also causing me to not be able to consume the quantities of normal foods I used to have:

- Veggie Wraps w Tofu @ Whole Foods

- Lentil Soup @ Whole Foods

- Lentil Curry @ Indian Restaurant

- Other Indian Food

- Asian (Thai) Food (Pad Thai)

I get a Heart Burn Feel / Acid Reflux at times and other times my stomach just gives away and I have to make a bathroom run. If not at that time, then I the next morning its not the solid motions that indicate good digestion.

A couple of things I might have done in the past 6-7 years might have aggravated this:

- Skipped lunches & hogged at dinners

- Skipped meals entire day / day and half

- Eat out all the time esp when traveling - vegetarians have limited repetitive options

- Not eating right per se

- Pretty much almost no fruit / salads in 7 years. Atleast, never bought much of it by myself at home even when I was cooking.

Well, In my opinion, i think that it's a period of adjustments for your body. It tries to be set according to your new eating habbits. I'm not a specialist to know, but i think that once your body adjusts, the benefits from fruiteating will be enormous...

i've found this in fruitarian site:

Several changes will occur during the changing period has the body will start to rebuild himself on new fuel and one of the most felt changes is detoxification, for the process consists on cleaning the organs. It may initially reflect on your skin, headaches may occur as well as dizziness, and you may loose energy.

During the initial period, people experience several discomforts, which give the impression that fruit exhausts the body and lowers health.

But this only happens in the first few days! Or none of these may occur and you feel wonderfully light, healthy and energetic…!

Weight and fat loss will definitely occur, cellulite elimination and body molding of all tissue according to the genetic program of every one.

Annoying headaches, stomach attacks and all kinds of aches and pains familiar to us will simply disappear.

You may be pleasantly surprised by the effect that cleaning your body has on your mind. Many people experience an amazing mind lift as soon as they stop clogging their system.

Your body cleanses itself as soon as you provide the environment for it by eating highraw/highfruit.

After cleansing even the senses readjust.

For example: When Offense74 and I prepared dinner during VV2007 he used curry to spice-up what was cooking. When I tasted it it was an 11 on a spicy-skale from 1-10 for me. Everybody else who tried it gave it something between 2 and 3. This is how things change by detox.

You have 2 options: get used to cooked food again by reintroducing it slowly or stay highraw/highfruit. I would suggest the second option.

I did not say go 100% raw or cooked. Of course you can eat high raw/fruit.

But getting used to more cooked food again when you are highraw/fruit certainly is a process which will take some time because the senses and reactions of the body really change.

IMO cooked food always involves some negative consequences. But when you eat small amounts there will possibly be any symptoms you are able to notice. It is just a question of where to draw the line.

can't just someone stay in between without any negative symptoms in their body?

I'm in a transition period too. I eat lots of fruits but i may eat some cooked food too...

To not feel any drawbacks, you'd have to eat from about 50% raw to about 80% raw. Having a cooked meal once or twice a week will definitely be noticed in your body.

So are we saying have a couple of cooked meals on the weekend or have a cooked meal atleast once a day / once in 2-3 days?

Zack - Its not just mindset.

My stomachs ability to handle spicy indian curry has gone down. I can EAT it .. My tasted buds dont feel it spicy, actually enjoy it.. opening of sinuses etc. he he.. Flavor.. .. But my stomach gets sensitive.

HERE's THE BOTTOMLINE.

I cant eliminate cooked / semi cooked foods (listed above in the first post) from my diet. A lot of times I have no time & control over the places I will be and have to eat. (travel, business meetings, social engagements & love of indian food (mom) etc.)

How much / how often do I need to have in circulation regularly to not have issues.

My diet of COOKED items will typically consist of that LIST I've outlined.

Spicy food and something pretty bland like rice or something is not the same thing. After eating raw, spicy food may be harder to handle, but not a simple cooked thing like rice, certain cooked foods I will agree with you. Keep it simple and boiled/steamed if you have to eat cooked.

While I'm not a big believer in food combining, eating fruit with other foods may contribute to reflux. The reasoning behind this is the thought that fruit takes a very short amount of time to pass through your stomach and will start to ferment in your stomach if other food slows down its passage. For this reason, you may want to eat fruit by itself, at least 30 minutes or more before eating anything else. It's worth a try anyway.

Liz had told me that. Eat FRUIT "before". I've been doing that. Lets see how this goes.

I totally agree. My doctor also told me that. She said that eating fruits with cooked food is a total waste 'cause fruits' nutrients get absorbed in the small intestine and when combined with other food, they get blocked

p.s. i try hard for a high raw diet but i still have those nasty cravings for vegan pizza with soy cheese, bean soup, lentils etc. When i read this thread i get inspiration from you guys who manage a high raw diet. When i'm out though, there are moments that i find myself weak to cooked temptations. Any suggestions how to fight these yearnings? I sure know it's in my mind only but i still suffer!

This is my problem too, but it's getting better with time because everytime I eat something cooked now I feel it afterwards-especially if it's salty-it burns like acid. So, now, I try to remind myself of those awful feelings before I put something into my mouth. This helps, but doesn't always work for strong cravings. Mono meals are also supposed to help deal with food addictions. Finally, fill up as much as possible on raw food like fruit before going anywhere that will have cooked food-this one has definitely helped me. Ciao

There are 2 aspects to it:

1 - You have a craving for something (spices, indian food, curry, thai cury, pizza..)

2 - You are in a situation where its not possible to get something RAW & fulfilling as easily (typically travelling for work, business lunches & dinners / social activities / parties)

I think 1 is a function of

- will power &

- options - that will satisfy your craving -

e.g. You have a craving for some cooked stuff. You have a nice juicy mango AND/OR watermelon AND/OR some young coconut AND/OR strawberries AND/OR nice cranberry & nut salad.

That will take care of your craving. GUARANTEED. Works for me. Flavors of Fruits you LOVE will calm all cravings.

2 - This is most likely what happens to me.

You are short on time, energy, location, patience to prepare or get a SATISFYING RAW MEAL

I tend to get busy and cannot prepare a RAW meal all the time. Typicaly SALADs at restaurants or other places dont really DO ANYTHING for me.

Some social functions I have to end up eating cooked foods.. in the lack of options, time, courtesy to others etc.

So - (1) You can control more.. (2) lesser control

So for (2) I have to ENSURE a little bit of regular cooked food into my diet to prevent a sudden reaction from my body. As they say... a little bit of TOUGH STUFF to make the body tough.

e.g. Immune systems of american population are very weak compared to those living in Asia... Why? NO EXPOSURE to the TOUGH STUFF.

THANK YOU ALL! THESE ARE GREAT TIPS AND THEY SEEM TO BE WORKING FOR ME TOO!

WELL, THIS SHOULD BE TRUE I GUESS.... I HEAR FROM MANY AMERICAN VEGANS IN OTHER FORUMS THAT MOST OF THEM CAN'T TOLERATE RAW GARLIC AND ONIONS WHILE IN MY COUNTRY, EATING RAW ONION AND GARLIC IS VERY COMMON AND WE ADD IT IN SALADS ON A DAILY BASIS WITHOUT FEELING ANY "BURNING" IN OUR STOMACH OR HAVING PROMLEMS DIGESTING IT...

As far as the acid reflux thing goes.. that would be 1: improper food combining/poor digestion 2: consuming too much food at one meal = poor digestion.

So watch that, try and keep fruits with fruits.

And.. well, I'd love to say there is a nice inbetween..some land of 50% raw.. but, from my bodily experience, there isn't.

Once you start nourishing your body, giving your cells the hydration they crave, your body will tell YOU what it wants to eat.. and if that happens to

end in negative reactions to cooked foods, it is for the better of your health.

Your body knows what it wants. Unfortunately/Fortunately, when your body starts to get cleaner, it wants the cleanest foods. Raw foods.
