Guest
Today I went out for a long ride but had to cut it short. It was pretty fun at the start even though it was snowing. I was test riding a set of $1400 wheels from the shop and they were incredible. Anyhow I had to cut it short when after about 2 hours my bike wouldn't shift and would barely brake due to all the ice. I had my mother take some pics of me when I got home. For some reason I look really wide in this picturehttp://img399.imageshack.us/img399/892/99860841sm2.jpg Then encrusted ice on my shoeshttp://img223.imageshack.us/img223/8379/51959748rh4.jpg Ice covered crankarms, chainstays, and carbon fiber spokeshttp://img399.imageshack.us/img399/5697/46492167ru2.jpg My dangerously frozen brakes...I had to squeeze them really hard to do anything at all.http://img223.imageshack.us/img223/1774/66267343ol0.jpg Frozen Rear Derailleur that wouldn't shift at all for the last 20 minutes of my ride.http://img399.imageshack.us/img399/310/61707249hg7.jpg I've got a new sprocket made out of icehttp://img528.imageshack.us/img528/7779/67866287zf5.jpg My bike getting ready to take a bathhttp://img528.imageshack.us/img528/2994/85936759lp1.jpg

LongTimeVegan
Riding in that kind of weather must take serious dedication. Not to mention having to wash and lube your entire bike when you're done with your training.
Guest
Yeah its a real pain in the butt getting up to ride some days but you've gotta do it if you wanna stay strong with the lousy mid atlantic weather in the winter. You never know whats coming. Oddly enough it looks like I may be wearing short sleaves next week.

Guest
Thanks PotterNice freakin' Bike. I'm jealous. What kind of tires do you have on? Mavic Arsys...by far the best wheels I've ever ridden. I've done short 2-3 mile tests of a few wheels over $2000 and one even costs $3000 but I liked these a lot more. By the way...any of you guys are welcome for a bad weather VP tour. Tasha
are those made for that kind of weather?
robert
I was worried about that too! Potter, be careful with your expensive toys! As an athlete I know you don't call them "toys" but you get what I mean. Does your bike get it's own tent, and you sleep outside on the rocks? Guest
Those wheel are definitely not made for this weather. I don't think any wheels are. Actually I was scared to death for my last 20 minutes home because I had to go over a bunch of bridges on the bike trail. Many of which were very ice. I had to really be careful. For the short straight ones I'd just go really fast so if I slid it wouldn't matter but some of the longer ones had slight curves and I'd be sliding about 6 inches going forward while trying to turn before my bike actually followed where I was trying to lead it. I came pretty close to winding up on the ground a few times too. But I wasn't too worried about the wheels. At the speeds I was going normally you get hurt...not the bike. This is optimal for most cyclists...we care about our bikes first. In a crash during a race I would probably get skinned up but without any broken bones...however bike damage is normal....its funny how that works...you go fast and crash...only the bike gets hurt...you go slow and crash...the bike may get scratched but you wind up with broken bones. robert
"Hi. My name is veganpotter, and I think I just pooped my pants." Sorry if that is out of line, it's meant to be really funny. It is to me And potter knows I love him so he can't be bothered and in fact, he'll probably agree that is what the photo looks like it is saying. http://img399.imageshack.us/img399/892/99860841sm2.jpg

Harley
VP, is that a carbon wheelset? If so, that is cheap, $1400, for a carbon set. I ride the Mavic Kyriums ES's and I love them. Awesome, shock absoprtion.

Awesome, shock absoprtion. Actually only the spokes are carbon...it's a very cool design. They go over bumps like they weren't there. I can't imagine how nice it would feel to ride these on a Ti or Carbon frame...I'm sure I'll get the chance.
