tommybricks
I live near a Puerto Rican grocery store. They sell packs of 4-5 ripe bananas for about 50 cents. Add in some lentils, garlic, onions, celery, romaine lettuce, and frozen berries for cheap eating all day.
Zack
I can get 6-7 pounds of ripe bananas for 1.50.
LongTimeVegan
Hopefully nobody is buying bananas produced by Chiquita: http://money.cnn.com/2007/03/14/news/companies/chiquita/index.htm Apparently they aren't producing in Columbia anymore, but I think it's safe to say they're doing the same sort of thing wherever they're operating now. Why this company was FINED for providing material support to groups designated TERRORIST ORGANIZATIONS by the State Department is beyond me. Shouldn't the board members of Chiquita be in Guantanamo or some CIA "blacksite" being waterboarded right now??? -Chris
Aaron
If you can get cous cous I've found it to be quick, marginally flexible, and a nice change of pace from other stuff. It's in various bulk sections around town, maybe at those places you listed too.
robert
Bulk foods, especially grains. Nuts, seeds, fruits and greens too. I used to actually try to get as many grams of protein per cent as I could I was pretty good at it so I'll have to review my old notes and see what comes up
