ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - News of a dogfighting operation run by disgraced NFL star Michael Vick has grabbed the attention of Maryland legislators.

Proposals are pending in Maryland and dozens of other states to toughen penalties for animal fighting or animal cruelty.

Democratic Delegate Barbara Frush introduced a bill today calling for tougher dogfighting and cockfighting penalties in Maryland. She decided to act after reading gruesome accounts of the pit bull operation Vick ran in Virginia. It is one of several proposals coming before Maryland lawmakers this term.

Dale Bartlett is deputy manager for animal cruelty issues for the Humane Society. He says the Vick case has sparked "an extremely impressive movement" to upgrade animal cruelty laws.

My thoughts: It's been too long of a time coming. I hope it passes.
