My local bike shop is in the process of ordering me a pair of Sidi Zetas, but I'm not sure they are going to fit...I wish they could sell you two different sizes based on left and right foot size difference (I guess that's where the idea of moldable shoes come in). I did try a pair of Sidi Genius 5s and those were ridiculously comfortable and had a great sole. I loved the SL buckle strap at the top, but it's not ideal for triathlons. : ( Anybody riding Look KEO pedals? I want to upgrade from my shoddy, stock Wellgo RC-713s. Sorry Laura, not trying to hijack your thread! : )

I got to that weight because I went through a rough break-up with a girl I was living with and my body and mind just shut off for a couple of months (I was around 135-140lbs before that point). I had no appetite and didn't really exercise much at all. After a couple of months went by I was feeling better and decided that I wanted to train for a triathlon (sprint distance) so I started eating better and incorporated running and swimming more frequently into my weekly schedule. I was running about 3+ miles 4-5 times a wk and the other 2-3 days I would be swimming (max about 32laps in the pool = 1mile in one hour's time). After about 6-8 months(and a 20k race), I kinda stopped swimming and I run infrequently because I want to gain more mass. I started going to the gym a few days a week (basically for the first time in my life) last fall. I went on and off for about 3months, took about a 3month break and now I'm back at it more so than before. I am now eating much more and lifting about 4-5 days a week. I'm still a weakling and trying to gradually increase my overall body strength. Two nights ago I put up 215lbs on the leg press for 8 reps, which is nothing I know, but it was the most I have ever done. Right now, I can only squat about 135-145lbs max and my flat dumbell press is maxed out at about 80lbs, haha! But, I'm working on it and it's making a difference. I put on about 10-15lbs very quickly and my friends started making fun of me about using roids since I have always been very narrow. My goal is about 170-175lbs with a lot of upper and lower body strength, and at that point, I will start incorporating more cycling, swimming and running (and most likely increase my calorie intake quite a bit to maintain). I don't want to compete in a triathlon and end up spending $60+ to suck ass. I'll post some pics up once I am where I want to be. Also, I don't really count calories, I don't keep a workout blog/journal, and I'm quite disorganized. I do however make an effort to eat about 4-6 meals today which include pre- and post- workout smoothies. This board has helped my training along with Brenden Brazier's book called "Thrive". It's loaded with great information. (If you haven't already read it). http://www.brendanbrazier.com/book/index.html

I've been working on bulking up for the past year or so now. I'm up to about 160lbs from an unhealthy low 120lbs at 5'11" (2yrs ago). I have the same problem with the extra fat over my lower abs as a result from taking in more calories and doing little to no cardio (only to initially add more weight). I personally like to do the bicycle crunches while laying on the floor and leg lifts. I also think that cycling in general could really help target that area (and also upper leg workouts). Here's a resource that I like with simple animated .gifs: http://www.shapefit.com/training-abs.html Cheers

What Music gets you pumped up for training?

When I'm feeling rebelious: Propagandhi (Potempkin City Limits! politcally-charged vegans from Winnipeg) Circle Of Dead Children (the ex bassist is a member on here) Tragedy World Burns to Death Between the Buried and Me Psyopus When I want instrumental: Pelican Russian Circles Mono Explosions in the Sky When I'm feeling gangsta: MF Doom Tame One Cage Yak Ballz Bigg Jus (Poor People's Day...amazing album) Hell Rell (of the Diplomats) JR Writer (also of Dipset) Prefuse 73 Nas (Illmatic) When I want Nintendo Covers: The Advantage And a few pages back there was talk of Noam Chomsky. I am a HUGE fan of Chomsky, but I don't really listen to him or any other politically-related talks while working out...just doesn't seem to fit : ). Also, speaking of NPR a few posts ago, there is a hilarious video of Chomsky ranting about NPR on youtube. Go find it. -
It's been so damn long since I've had ranch dressing, I had sort of forgotten it exists, until I was on the vegcooking.com site and found this recipe. It's outta-control good! Goes great with a spinach salad! It calls for 1/4 tsp. dill but I used more...cuz I'm a dillweed : ). 'Ranch' Dressing 1/2 cup Nayonaise 1/2 cup Veganaise 1/4 cup soy milk 1/2 tsp. garlic salt 1/2 tsp. garlic powder 1/2 tsp. onion powder 1/2 tsp. black pepper 2 rounded tsp. fresh chopped parsley 1-1/2 tsp. apple cider vinegar 1/4 tsp. dill • Put all ingredients in the blender and blend until creamy. (I assume you can use all Veganaise (1 cup) or all Nayonaise (1 cup) as well if you don't have both.) Here's the link if need be: http://www.vegcooking.com/recipeshow.asp?RequestID=526&Search=vegan+recipes

Although it's a tad bit pricey, I personally use this Beauty Without Cruelty 3% Alpha Hydroxy Facial Cleanser which helps me clear up. I use this on my face instead of harsh soaps. Also, although it's expensive, it lasts quite a long time if you use a small amount once a day. http://pics.drugstore.com/prodimg/46451/200.jpg

What are the bulkers eating???
damer replied to xveganjoshx's topic in Bodybuilding/Strength Training
Lately I've been doing what I've heard works for other people and it's starting to work for me. Last summer I was way under weight due to depression/stress (118lbs, 5'11", now 147lbs), and I've been weight training for the last few months. Also I've done a few road races (running) in between. Also, working on building triathlon-type stamina (with swimming and biking mixed a few times a wk. when possible). Oh, I'm also skateboarding a mini ramp like us older guys do for extra cardio a few times a wk : ). Since you don't want to hear about the shakes, BESIDES the Vega shake I have every morning like clockwork ; ), I am also eating these foods throughout the week: -Tofu (usually pan fried on wheat toast with soy cheese and earth balance, I can give you more specifics if interested) -Avocados (if not sliced then in guacamole form on just about anything) -Potatoes (for quickness if you don't mind the microwave, i just poke some holes in them and nuke for 3-4mins depending on size/quantity) -Nuts (walnuts and almonds especially) -CHUNKY Peanut Butter on bananas (about 2-4 each day, it's so darn good) -Peanut Butter and Jelly in a burrito (it's really not that bad!) -Soy Yogurt (1 a day when I have some available) -Organic Wheat or Organic Wheat and Flax pasta with home made pesto! (I have a great recipe from Vegan Planet for this if anybody is interested) OR Organic pasta with olive oil, crushed garlic and beans (pinto/navy/chick peas/kidney/etc.) -Hand fulls of raw spinach, or spinach salad (usually with nuts and tomatoes) -Frozen Broccoli (eat a couple bags a wk when possible, usually by itself steamed or microwaved with Earth Balance and a touch of salt) -Home made vegan pizza w/ loads of vegetables -Builder Bars (mint and pb baby!) -Fruit: apples, pears, peaches, grapes, melon etc. Hopefully this post isn't too vague, but I just kinda snack and have mini-meals all day, so it's just how my method looks written down I guess. -

FROM THE ASHES!!! Robert, I just emailed you, I am in dire need of Vega! Thanks duder and keep up the good work. -
I'm from the Upstate section of NY also known as Western New York, which most people up here refer to as "Upstate" which is probably incorrect...ha. I live close to Rochester. I do have a strange taste in music I suppose too. I grew up listening to mainly punk, hardcore and metal but at about 18 or 19 I started to become addicted to underground hiphop and also started listening to more jazz. My mother is a retired voice and piano teacher and I grew up playing guitar and drums so I learned an appreciation for different forms of music I suppose rather than being latched onto one genre. I also enjoy classical and music from the 40's, which is probably strange for somebody my age as well. : ) To answer the triatholon question, I am shooting to do a sprint not far from where I live which involves: .5m S/12m B/5K R.

My name is Tim, I'm 25 years young and I'm from all-but-exciting Upstate NY. I have been vegan for 6 years now and over a year and a half ago I took up running (it's sort of a family tradition). Last summer I ran my first 15k and then a 20k about a month later. During the 20k I pulled my groin about halfway through the race and finished dead last in my age group (literally limping over the finish line...how embarrassing!). So I stopped running through the fall and over the winter and I became lazy and super out of shape. So this summer I started running again and also wanted to increase my muscle mass and strength so I started to work out a few days a week and I'm feeling much stronger and more energetic. More recently I have started combining my running training (avg. 3.5miles/day) with riding my bike about 10-15 miles as well, which has helped build my legs and give me more strength for running too. My constant goal is working towards being less skinny and increasing my strength (currently 5'11" @ 123.5lbs), and in summer of '07 I am going to complete my first triatholon...gotta aim high! Happy to be here with other awesome vegans, Tim p.s. Almost forgot to list some of my hobbies and passions so here they are: I love birding, appreciating the natural world, playing music (guitar), listening to: hiphop, jazz, punk and metal. I am interested in documetaries and indy movies (who isn't?), zmagazine, and I am also a huge Noam Chomsky fan. : )
