Scale is giving widely varying readings this morning, but the middle of the pack reading that was most consistently delivered was 166.0, so I'll go with that for my morning weight. -

Rode 12.42 miles in 54:48 yesterday, average HR 121. I only had this amount of time to ride, so I stayed in town where the hills aren't so steep, thus the higher average speed than on my usual hilly route. Weight this morning: 167.2. Still have my eye on a 5k May 22. I'm going to continue laying off the running and everything else involving being on my feet a lot for a while so that hopefully my foot will be significantly better by then and stay that way. If I can just keep building up endurance on the bike and lose 4 or 5 more pounds by then, I ought to be able to run it in under 25, maybe even around 23. -
You may even be able to do it now, depending on how hard you're willing to push yourself. When I was on my 3-month, 30 pound weight loss/workout binge a year and a half ago, I was running 5k times about where yours were when I was just doing my daily runs and running only moderately hard, but my first race time that fall was under 24 minutes and the next two were under 23 minutes! The key is to figure out exactly the right pace--go out too fast and you'll flame out in the last 2k, go out too slowly and you won't get nearly the best time you're capable of even if you sprint at the end. I found my heart rate monitor really useful for figuring out the right pace--keeping my heart rate around 160 seemed to be about right for a 5k pace.

Rode 27 miles in 2:15 yesterday, average HR 114, max 159. Unfortunately it takes a lot more time to get a decent amount of exercise on the bike than running--from what I've read something like 3 miles of biking is equivalent to 1 mile of running, and in my current physical condition I could have done 9 miles running in probably 1:45 or less. Past experience has shown that not running doesn't cure my foot ailment, but I can't say it didn't help at all, so I'm going to try to stick with the bike for a while. Weight this morning was at 167.6 (or was it 167.8? Can't remember.). -

Rode 20 miles today in 1:32, average HR 124, max 153. Weight is currently plateaued at about 168. We'll see if the 20 miles at a pretty fast pace do anything to the scales in the morning. -

Wow, what a difference not even 24 hours makes. I found a conversation about tarsal tunnel at http://www.plantar-fasciitis.org/talk/topic35.html, and a massage therapist involved in the conversation recommended a particular stretching technique as well as massaging the foot in the general vicinity (just not on top) of the tibial nerve, the one that gets pinched if you've got tarsal tunnel syndrome. So, I did a lot of self-massage and stretching last night, and the foot felt 1000% better this morning. I didn't run the 5k anyway because I slept in since I wasn't planning on running it. Just as well, the more I thought about it the more I realized I'd rather wait 3 weeks and get a decent time than spend $25 to find out I'm still not in good enough shape to get a good time yet, which I already knew! Decided to go running anyway since the foot felt pretty good. Since I didn't do the race, I decided to push myself a little bit today. Ran 4.4 miles in 40:13, average HR 148 and peak of about 165. -

Forgot to reset my odometer, but I think I went just over 20 miles on the bike in 1:43, average HR 113, max 150. I hate to miss tomorrow's 5k, but I'm just not sure it's a good idea with the way my foot has been feeling. It felt good this morning and feels good tonight, but most of the day it's been painful enough that there was no way in hell I felt like running even if there weren't the consideration of saving myself for the 5k. So, I've got my eye on one that's on the 22nd, and in the meantime I'm going to stay off the foot a lot and do lots of biking. Unfortunately it hasn't gone away even when I've rested it for several weeks in the past, but it was feeling good enough for me to run 10-30 miles for the last several weeks, so the rest must have done something. But now that the weather's good enough to bike, may as well just do that for a while. -

Foot is still bugging me. The pain comes and goes and sometimes goes away, but the problem (tarsal tunnel syndrome) has been about the same for months now despite orthotics, anti-inflammatories, and other attempted treatments. I guess it's back to the podiatrist soon. So, back to riding the bike today, since it doesn't aggravate my foot at all. Did 12.14 miles in 56:10, with an average HR of 122, max of 150. I'm contemplating doing a 5k Saturday, but I don't think I'll do it if my foot doesn't feel better Saturday than it has today. -

Did about 5 miles in exactly an hour. (Took a 5 minute bathroom break in the middle, which is included in the time.) Average HR 132. Did the big hill near my house at the end, with a peak HR of 165. -

Weight this morning: 167.2. I don't have a precise figure for my weight at the beginning of the month--not that my scales are all that accurate anyway--but my guess is I've lost almost 9 pounds, 5 of it in the last week and a half. -

Weight this morning: 168.0. My stomach was pretty empty this morning so it's hard to say how my weight actually compares to how it was at the beginning of the month, but my best guess is I probably weighed about 174-175 on an equally empty stomach back then, so that means I've lost perhaps 6 or 7 pounds this month. I think it has really helped me to almost completely cut out beverages other than water. As healthy as what I was eating was, I was consuming several hundred calories a day in the form of sweetened tea and the occasional margarita or glass of fruit juice. it seems there's a lot of recent research suggesting that liquid calories (unless it's a smoothie or something else that contains fiber) do little to nothing to satisfy hunger, so even if they're otherwise healthy they're a poor choice for anyone trying to lose fat. Ran about 9.3 miles in 116 minutes, average HR 125, max HR 140. It's supposed to rain a lot tomorrow, and I wanted to get my long run for the week in today anyway so that I can rest tomorrow and run the 5k on Saturday. It's always fun to step on the scale after a long run, even though I know it's mostly water and glycogen that's been lost and only a little of it fat. Weight was 164.2. Hopefully I'll still be under 168 tomorrow morning! -

Weight this morning was 170.0. My stomach wasn't as empty as yesterday morning, so I'm guessing this actually means I lost a little weight. Ran 4.4 miles this afternoon, time of 45 minutes (last 3.4 in 34 minutes), average HR 141. -

Weight this morning: 169.8. Like last Monday when I weighed 172, my stomach was unusually empty, so comparing the two empty-stomach weights I guess I've lost about 2 pounds in 8 days. Not bad. Shot some basketball with my son this afternoon, but didn't play a game, due to Sunday's injury. It's feeling a lot better, but I'm not going to take any chances coming back prematurely. I'm thinking about running a 5k race this weekend, although I know with the extra few pounds I'm carrying my time is going to stink compared to my best times. Got Robert's new book in the mail today. Maybe once my injury is healed up that will inspire me to start lifting regularly again! -

Ran 4.4 miles yesterday, focusing on speed work. Jogged pretty slowly (HR around 115 average) 1 mile to the park, then did intervals where I went at a moderately fast pace (a little faster than 5k pace) until I was nearly out of breath, then walked until I had caught my breath, then did again, covering a total of 2.4 miles in a little under 24 minutes. Each interval my heart rate got up to the upper 150s to low 160s, and generally I let it drop down in the 120s to 140s before starting the next one. I then ran a 10-minute mile home, throwing in a couple more bursts of speed toward the end. Average heart rate overall was 137. Unfortunately, I overdid it a little. After initially feeling fine, a couple of hours later my left lower back/hip/butt area started hurting, and within a couple of hours it was painful to even walk for a while. I'm feeling significantly better today so hopefully it's nothing serious, but I'll have to give the exercise some rest for another day if not more. To compensate I'm trying to be super-strict with the diet. I haven't had any bread since yesterday morning, still eating very low-fat with lots of green veggies, and for now I've cut out all beverages other than water. Weight this morning: 173.0, down a pound from 10 days ago. -

Human slavery was once huge. Does that mean that it would have made more sense to have a "Don't Buy Products Made By Slaves On Monday" campaign than to just say slavery was wrong and we needed to stop enslaving people? That is just one of many examples where history has borne out that taking a principled ethical stand was in the long run effective.
