Vegans and Straight Edge relationships...
CollegeB replied to godesslissa's topic in General Discussion
the guy that did supersize me, has a vegan wife and I heard an interview with him on NPR. When at home he eats vegan because she is a great cook, but if he is out at a restraunt then he will order meat. I am in a relationship with a non-vegan, and it does cause some problems since eating out at many restraunts is difficult for vegans, atleast for me since I hate asking the server does this have eggs, chicken stock, milk, etc. in it. But we were going out before I went vegan so it was not something either of us considered an obstacle, but it is now. the way I see it is that people are going to make their own choices about what they eat, and many will do so regardless of the harm they cause others, because they don't care. Or they are slaves to habit, maybe both, whatever their excuse is. My parents eat meat, most of my friends eat meat, and so does my girlfriend. So really if I wanted to be very strict and cut ties with any meat eater I really wouldnt know anyone. The best thing I can do for veganism with the meat eaters I know is just help them understand veganism. Maybe they will come around eventually, maybe not, but I can't force them to be vegan, they can't force me to not be vegan. More vegan places to eat would make life a whole lot easier though. -
isn't this just going back to combining foods such as rice and beans to get complete proteins? I thought this practice was not necessary. However I think they atleast complement eachother well, and probably do make complete proteins.

Have you looked around the site and looked at other projects like the trackball robot operated by a cockroach? What is up with this guy, none of this seems to have any purpose. I suppose though that if we are combining animals and machines then descartes was wrong, animals are not just little machines. There was a distinction. I find these types of experiments disturbing not only because they are done on animals but because they are blurring the line between the natural world and the mechanical. This reminds me of an experiment i read about where researchers implanted electrodes on the brain of a mouse and where they were placed would stimulate the left or right whiskers causing the mouse to turn its head in stimulated direction. Because of the stimulation on either side the mouse was controllable, so they created a remote control mouse.

A friend of mine told me that all of their lab equipment is supplied by Nalgene. All the test tubes and I dont know what else were from Nalgene and this was not some animal testing lab. I guess my point is that if you want to buy a Nalgene bottle the money you spend does go to to Nalgene, but they probably know what they sold and that it was not animal testing shit. By attending school and/or just paying taxes you undoubtebly have supported Nalgene because all schools buy test tubes and other lab equipment which most likely is from Nalgene. Many of us buy clif bars. And on the package it says the bar may contain traces of dairy (well they used to, some I have now dont say that) anyhow they were made or processed in a factory which dealt with animal products, as do some of the brands of soy protien available to vegans. Buying these products supports the exploitation of animals in much the same way as buying a Nalgene bottle. Considering these things I know I will continue to buy vegan protein powder and I am not concerned so much as where it was made. Many say well the clif bar just happened to be made in a factory that processes dariy and other non vegan materials. I did scratch off the Nalgene name from my bottle so as to not advertise for them, but if someone asked what kind it was I think I would tell them just incase they would choose Nalgene vs. something made in China which would, I believe cause more suffering to living beings than just buying a bottle from a company that also happens to make animal research stuff because they made all other lab stuff. As I assume, many goods from China were made by underpaid workers who are exploitated by a Communist government masquerading as some form of democracy. A government where they look the other way as companies put workers in dangerous conditions and then hamper workers from forming a resistance to these companies. I suppose the best thing to do is not buy anything, but if you want to then here are two things I would consider. Was this just rambling or am I making any kind of sense? I guess that since I own a bottle I could consider myself as a shareholder and ask that they improve the bottles and forget the animal testing stuff... That is really what the website I originally posted was about, asking Nalgene to change is products. Anyhow I was talking with a friend about the Nalgene thing and our conversation inspired this post.

Yeah I'm really dissapointed, wish I had known this earlier. I'm probably going to scratch their name off of my bottle just so I am not promoting their name.

Would it be better to take L-Glutamine or do you think I am getting the same benefits with L-Glutamic Acid?
-
I bought one of these last year becasue I had heard they were good bottles, and I've dropped mine plenty of times, dont wash it etc. it is a good product, but I came upon this today.... http://www.rmad.org/nalgene.html the company also makes restraining devices for animal testing. So if you are thinking of buying a Nalgene bottle, you can weigh the ethics.

Does anyone know if L-Glutamic Acid is the same as L-Glutamine. I would suspect they are different because the name is different, but I don't know.

Is Veganism The Optimum Nutrition of the Future?
CollegeB replied to robert's topic in Health & Nutrition Programs
I read alot about the future since I like sci-fi books and in Philip K. Dick's novel "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" also made into the movie "Blade Runner", there is no meat to eat. Animals were almost extinct. There had been some kind of conditions that killed many animals. One passage talked about birds falling from the sky in great numbers. I want to say it was pollution, but am not sure what Dick wrote. Anyhow this world's current pace of animal consumption especially in the U.S. and our pollution of the globe can certainly make the scenario of the book a reality. All of the meat eaten in this book was ersatz (fake) meat because animals were so scarce that they were very valuable. Bill Gates could probably go bankrupt buying himself something like the San Diego Zoo granted if all the animals were still alive. I think there will be more veganism in the future. Regretably most will continue to eat meat, but I think less will be eaten just to avoid disease. Good topic Rob. -

What Are The Staples Of Your Diet?
CollegeB replied to robert's topic in Health & Nutrition Programs
I eat all that stuff though I also eat plenty of tortilla chips. Add in some fake meats for me (Boca burgers, ribletts, loma linda vege-burger) and spinach! -
well Honey is an animal product so I believe vegans should try to avoid it. Also the whole stinging thing kills these insects.

If you are interested I would look up some of those people on different sites. for example the PETA website had Henry Rollins nominated forl sexy vegan of the year or something to that effect. I emailed him and he was really suprised since he eats chicken, fish, etc. Some of the people I have found to be vegan is the New singer of Sepultura (Derek Greene), Davey Havok of AFI, and I have read the drummer for Fear Factory is a vegan. Derek I am sure of since a bio said he eats lots of Boca burgers. Anyhow i hope your searches are productive.

Hey ISETFIRE. One thing that helped me quit eating cheese was this stuff called rennet. It is in cheese and I believe it comes from the intestines of the cow or something like that. Anyhow an animal had to die to get this substance that many cheeses are made with. Ohh and another thing... Boy Sets Fire rules!
