  1. I became vegan in May of 2005 after working at a Fast Food Restaurant for several years, and becoming very disgusted with what I saw. There have been numerous changes in my life after almost 7 years of veganism, and I've had lots more energy than I've had in the past. - I lost weight around my mid section, and had a 6 pack for the first time in my life by the end of the Summer, 2005. - I've gotten very much into gardening, food production, and trying to make better produce more readily available at lower costs. - While I've always loved fruits and vegetables, being vegan opened my eyes to so many fruits and veggies I've never really tried or appreciated. - I've gained a major appreciation for food, everything from cooking to raw foods, seasonal and local. - I've gained the Superhero ability of inspiring people around me to eat more fruits and vegetables. (okay, not Superhero, but it's still cool) - Most importantly, I've made friends in all corners of the world, and have networked with so many amazing people doing so many incredible things.
  2. You might want to try splitting up your muscle groups to allow more recovery time. I usually will do something like a "push" workout (Triceps, chest, shoulders, mostly bench work and dips), a "pull" workout (more biceps and back, curls/pullups, bent over rows, etc), and a leg workout. That way you can pound on each muscle group more and give them more time for recovery. It works REALLY well for me because I typically schedule a leg workout before a day off, so that if I'm too sore to walk around a do a lot, it's not that big a deal. Good luck.
  3. I think I heard about one a few years ago, but I'm not entirely sure. Lentils are always good on their own though too.
  4. I would suggest adding any kind cardio to your workout routine, and upping your calories a bit if you feel you need to. At my height I was never the biggest guy, but I was always really cut by keeping active, and never had to really monitor my calories at all (which works for me because I have a near-legendary appetite). Good luck to you.
  5. You can definitely find some online for a fair price, but I find total calories and protein from foods tend to be a lot cheaper anyway. You could always drink water, then a smoothie (with or without protein) after a workout to get hydrated and your glycogen levels back up, then eat a meal afterwards as well.
  6. That looks pretty solid. The first time I read through I misread "filler" for "fiber" and thought "What's the matter with fiber?"
  7. Welcome to the forums, Didi! The amount of food you might be eating (in addition to what you're eating) could be part of the bloating problem too.
  8. Welcome! It's nice to have you here.
  9. I pressure cook all of my beans except for lentils (I find they don't seem to save that much time in the PC, but that's just me). As for them destroying proteins, I don't really know about that. I can't really imagine it altering them anymore than straight boiling would, as it's not that much higher of a temperature, and because you're still only using water (as opposed to vegetable oils, coal/some other charring method), I can't really imagine undesirable compounds forming while they cook. I say keep pressure cooking.
  10. Sure is, but that's cool by me. 9/3/2011 South Carolina was great and it was great to see my family again. I started lifting weights with my little brother and kept at it when I got back to Texas, my everything is sore right about now. I haven't been running much, but started riding my roommate's bike around the neighborhood instead. It's a sporadic schedule, and like I said, I'm still doing cardio, so I don't have a set goal really, and I'm looking to either find a gym or throw down with my roommates on more exercise equipment, but I can already tell I'm adding weight back on, and that's cool with me. I've also been giving one of my roommates some simple massages and my forearms and starting to look like Mini-Robert's. My diet has been consisting of tons of homemade burritos (consisting of a wide variety of vegetables including carrots, potatoes, onions, eggplant, peppers, spinach, kale, pinto/black/garbanzo beans, and topped with salsa or homemade hummus...mmm...hummus), some whole wheat pasta (can't wait for my tomatoes to come in so I can start making my own sauce), lots of bananas and plums, lots of water and kombucha, but I really need to start growing wheat grass again to get back on the "juice" (get it? ).
  11. I was born there and lived there until 1995 (about 10 years pre-vegan). I know there's a LOT of vegan friendly places around the city (We Philadelphians love our food), but I've been there for maybe a day since going vegan. If I'm ever there though I'll have to look you up.
  12. I invested $40 in a pressure cooker about 3 years ago (mostly for beans, but it does other stuff pretty well), and that thing has paid for itself so many times over. I cook a large batch, drain them in a colander, then put them in a tupperware in the freezer. When I want to eat them, simply pop open the top, pour some warm water in and they break apart and reboil in a couple minutes.
  13. Philadelphia - Born Pike County - Northeast PA (The only county PA that's a suburb of NYC) North Houston - All Suburbs, about 10 miles from the city Austin - Currently residing, living in the city.
  14. Welcome to the boards, Lydia! Getting some extra calories in there is a great start, in addition to doing things like push ups or pull ups around the house anytime you have time/think about it. My roommate and I had a dip rack in the living room, and every time one of us would walk through, we did a set of dips. Great way to get started.
  15. 8/21/2011 I've been busy all day getting ready to go on vacation to see my little brother in South Carolina (who I haven't seen in 3 years now...mildly excited). I've been getting all the loose ends tied, getting a batch of kombucha ready for a friend in town and teaching her how to make her own, making my final decisions on which roommate is most worthy to water my plants while I'm gone (I have 5 roommates and that was actually a tough decision), getting packed, mapping my route to the Greyhound station early in the morning when the first couple of city buses are running. Oy, getting to the part where you go on vacation is sometimes more stressful than the things in our lives that we feel we need to vacation from. It's been a non-stop past few days with work, and I'm really itching to go for a run, which might be the first thing I do when I get to South Carolina, though I might be able to squeeze one out in a little bit while the kombucha is cooling on the stove. I probably won't be able to log on here at all after today, so have a great week everyone.
  16. Hello everyone (...again). My name's Edward. I've been vegan for a little over 6 years now. So I've been a member here for almost 6 years, posted almost 4,000 posts in my first 2 years, then vanished for the next 4. I blame it on everything on the internet being connected (so many people I've known here are on my Facebook), but I'm sure there's so many new people I haven't met that I really should do a check-in and stay for a little bit. Always nice to see new vegan faces. In terms of exercise and training, I'm sort of a Jack-Of-All-Trades. I enjoy running, biking, weight lifting, yoga, stretching, giving massages. I have a hard time sticking to one thing because I enjoy the variety of the exercise world. I like to stay in shape, but in the past 2 years I've become a full time gardener and food grower. Reading about it, spending time with my plants, collecting yard debris for compost, etc. It's amazing how labor intensive food production actually is. I'm currently living in Austin, Texas, after a 43 month stint of living in Houston. I enjoy it out here, except for the whole "1 in 150 year drought combined with record heat while I'm trying to grow a successful garden" thing. It's a slight change from the 54 inches of rain a year I could expect while living in Houston.
  17. 8/17/2011 So it's been 25 months since my last entry on this blog, let's see what's new (thought a lot of you have me on Facebook, so you know what's up) : I moved out of Houston earlier this year, and while I wanted to move out a couple of years ago and go elsewhere, I ended up moving 3 hours west to the great city of Austin, Texas. I currently live in a large house with 5 other people, including my landlord (She's vegan, from Houston and she enjoys my cooking, so we get along ). I had to leave behind my weights and equipment in Houston (though I want to get them back eventually), and so I've been just doing lots of running and bike riding. I haven't driven my car in over a month now and I'm planning on getting rid of it. (public transportation is a beautiful thing too, especially when you can take a bus that drops you off RIGHT AT THE FRONT DOOR OF YOUR FAVORITE CO-OP! ) Said Co-op sells these amazing local whole wheat tortillas (very large ones too) in packs of 10 for $3. I'm bringing burritos back. While I want my weights back to do some weight lifting, my interests aren't nearly where they once were. In the past couple of years my interests have moved into the wonderful world of organic food production (I like to think I went from human nutrition to plant nutrition). I give plants to people (mostly co-workers) all the time to help spread the joys I've found as well. As much as I'm loving it here though, I don't honestly know how long I'll be around here. I've learned (and taught others) so much about local food movements, and it's great having so much vegan company around, but I honestly sort of miss having not-like-minded people around (maybe it's because I helped inspire a larger number of people in other communities, even if it wasn't about going vegan, it was positive inspiration), though I don't miss the silly debates I always used to get into.
  18. My roommate has a fried rice seasoning packet with whey...I could only think "...Seriously?"
  19. 7/19 So the trip home didn't go as well as planned. I was stuck on top of a mountain at my parent's house, and the computer didn't work, and they don't get cell phone reception, so I was essentially a prisoner in a desert type prison. Sorry that I didn't get to meet anybody that I was planning on meeting while I was home. I'm definitely planning on moving out of Texas when my lease is up, and I was thinking about moving to Oregon, but I might go somewhere back closer to the East Coast, we'll have to see. Not too much else is new. Texas is still a 1/4 mile from the sun, though it rained last night for the first time in almost 2 months, and really cooled things down for the night, but now it's day and it's hot again.
  20. The first time I ever heard the word "Vegan" was on an episode of "America's Most Wanted". An activist who was destroying animal testing labs with explosives was the topic of one of their stories. I had no bad feelings about people who chose to be vegan, but wow was I exposed to some B.S Nonsense propaganda thanks to John Walsh.
  21. When you can use fruits (so maybe a daytime shake) OJ, banana, spinach, hemp protein powder. Blend and enjoy.
  22. David Carradine, Farah Fawcet, Michael Jackson, Ed McMahon, Billy Mays...have I missed any for this month?
  23. Welcome to the forums. I actually lived about 50 miles from Scranton on the other end of 84 where PA meets NY in the Milford area. I'm heading home in a couple of days too.
