  1. So, a friend took me along to one of his yoga classes last night on a free pass. I was pretty nervous and didn't really know what to expect but I LOVED every minute of it. I'm pretty flexible already and have great balance (from kickboxing 4 times a week) I was pretty happy to discover that I could do the eagle on my first try without much difficulty. That got me pretty stoked. Yoga seems to be the perfect thing to add to my kickboxing schedule -- wicked cross-training. I'm just wondering if going only once a week is too little? Or does it really matter how much you go?
  2. I don't have cable TV, but I confess I'm a huge gamer. It all started in the early eighties when my parents used to pick my brother and I up hend held "Nintendo" games duty free whenever we flew back from Australia (to shut us up for the 20 hour flight). I found a pic of donkey kong, one of my fave's: http://img.hexus.net/v2/gaming/nintendo/gameandwatch.jpg Since then I've been throught the Odyssey 2, Nintendo, Gameboy, Super Nintendo, Playstation, PS2, and of course PC games. I still have every game system and all the games/accessories that I've ever owned (Except for the Odyssey 2). They're buried in a trunk in the basement. Can't wait to pull them all out one day. I'm Getting the PS3 this fall when most of the good games start coming out... GTA IV, Assassin's Creed, GT5, Call of Duty Modern Warfare... can't wait.
  3. Chemo side-effects turned tot's parents against doctors' recommendations Thursday, July 26, 2007 | 6:33 PM ET CBC News Fear that chemotherapy would cause years of negative health effects for their preschool son is what prompted a Quebec couple to refuse the cancer treatment even though doctors recommended it, his mother says. The case attracted widespread attention and controversy when doctors asked Quebec's children's protection agency to intervene with the family, who live in the western Outaouais region. The agency declined. Marie-Élise L'Espérance explained Thursday that potential side-effects are the reason she doesn't want her three-year-old son, Anael, to undergo the chemotherapy to treat tumours in his brain and spinal cord. "Chemo is something that can leave effects on a long-term," L'Espérance told CBC News. "It stays in his body for many, many years.… Chemo has been compared to a nuclear bomb in the body. It destroys many things — not just tumours or cancer," said L'Espérance, adding that medical officials said they could not guarantee the chemotherapy would work. L'Espérance learned that Anael had cancer in January. He underwent an operation at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario that his mother thinks probably saved his life. But now, she said, the cancer is no longer life-threatening. "If … the doctor would have told us he's going to die soon, we would have done chemo probably instantly," she said. She said she would reconsider chemotherapy if Anael's condition worsened. For now, the family is allowing doctors to monitor the growth of the tumours and is giving Anael a diet of mostly raw fruits and vegetables. L'Espérance said she has read reports that the diet will boost his immune system. A spokesperson for the hospital said doctors there stand by their medical opinion that chemotherapy is the best way to stop the boy's cancer from spreading. However, the spokesperson said the hospital will not be taking any legal action to force the family to accept treatment. Radiation has more side-effects than chemo: doctor Dr. Mark Greenberg, the medical director of the Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario, agreed that cancer treatment often has long-term effects on children because it targets fast-growing cells — and children's bodies are growing and developing. A 2006 study found that 65 per cent of children who survive cancer have at least one chronic health condition related to their treatment, he said. Radiation tends to have more serious effects on children's brains than chemotherapy, but the latter can still damage fertility, heart function and, in some cases, produce secondary cancers, he said. However, he noted that doctors are constantly refining chemotherapy regimes in an effort to reduce side-effects and appear to be having some success. But the bottom line, he said, is that chemotherapy has been very successful in treating cancer. "In creating survivors, chemotherapy is the absolute mainstay of therapy."
  4. The US dollar. Jeez, in another 2 years it might actually be worth less than the Canadian dollar.
  5. Why moving here? Try HSBC. Very international and lots of presence in Canada. You better cash out any US $ money you have now before it dips even lower...
  6. That's a friggin' scary game.
  7. The book is worth it just for the recovery pudding recipe.

    Sicko

For every horror story someone has there is another with a story of success. At least we both agree that there is room for improvement in our system.

    Sicko

The Canada food guide was certainly a big step forward from recent years. They're going to have to step up their promotion of prevention big time soon. It would be nice if healthy peeps got tax breaks, that would rock. Sure, our system isn't perfect, but if I walk out my front door and get hit by a bus I'll get looked after right away no questions asked and afterwards I won't have to dedicate the entire rest of my life to pay for it. It's an easy thing to take for granted until you see a movie like this.

    Sicko

Watched Sicko this weekend and loved it. I've never been happier to have universal health care. I had no idea it was so bad in the Unites States. It'll be interesting to see if the Canadian health care system eventually collapses under the weight of the aging baby-boomers... Good movie though, everyone should watch it.

  13. What kind of rice are you buying that has bugs in it?
  14. Trev and I took your comments about our last round of sushi to heart and just finished vegan sushi night part two! You'll be happy to see that we had plenty of avacado rolls this time around. We also had mango rolls and once again home made miso soup. http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o56/veganunderground/VeganSushiParttwo0136.jpg Sheriff Brody hoping some avacodo falls on the kitchen floor. http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o56/veganunderground/VeganSushiParttwo0135.jpg http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o56/veganunderground/VeganSushiParttwo0138.jpg http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o56/veganunderground/VeganSushiParttwo0139.jpg We managed to finish the big plate -- looks like we're having sushi for lunch tomorrow! http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o56/veganunderground/VeganSushiParttwo013.jpg

    Vegan Sushi

We picked up the plates in Japan town in San Francisco last October. First time we've ever used them for Japanese food.
  16. Tonight for dinner we made vegan sushi for the first time ever. Brown rice, orange bell pepper, cucumber and yam. Next time we have to make the rolls a little smaller. We also made miso soup with arame sea veggies in it. http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o56/veganunderground/sushiichi.jpg http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o56/veganunderground/sushini.jpg http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o56/veganunderground/sushisan.jpg http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o56/veganunderground/sushishi.jpg
  17. Seeing as Trev highjacked the trackstand thread, I thought I'd start a new topic for him. Here's a little vid I found of Vincent Hermance riding in a a French comp recently. Vincent is currenlty ranked number one in the world for UCI 26" bike trials. Video Check out the amazing 'up' at 1:07.
  18. Okay, I suck. I've missed about six journal entries of my workouts. What can I say, it's summertime and I'm out enjoying the weather and working out as hard as ever, just spending less time on the computer. I think I'll put this to rest for a while... maybe pick it up again in the winter.
