  1. My favorite female hero is always Wonder Woman. A lot of writers ten to avoid her like the plague because they don't really get her, but she has so much potential and stands for what we CAN be. She's both a nurturer and a crusader and always has a sense of spiritual purity to her. Greg Rucka wrote her best. My favorite male hero changes a lot. Right now it's Superman, but sometimes it's Cyclops, Batman, Gambit, Greeb Lantern (Hal) or occasionally Spider-Man. I think Superman gets written off as a too powerful hero far too often. It's like a lot of writers are stuck on the fact that he's super fast, super strong, flies, has x-ray vision, etc. From a character standpoint he has a lot of inner turmoil going on that hasn't really been touched on as much as it could be. I tend to like my heroes full of light, even in a dark world. My favorite team is the X-Men. Grant Morrison's run on New X-Men brought my attention back to comics and it continues to be my favorite work. Geoff Johns did some swell work on Teen Titans too.
  2. Thanks VeganEssentials! I sent them an e-mail ... hopefully they'll reply soon.
  3. I've been listening to a lot of Yeah Yeah Yeahs, She and Him, The Kills, The New Pornographers, The Star Fighter Pilot, Hank Williams Sr., Jewel, Arcade Fire, Death Cab For Cutie, Adele, The Hush Sound ... the list goes on and on. Music is awesome, and I'm usually listening to some form of it 99% of the day.
  4. Haven't seen this yet, but it looks like a good piece to get people interested in the food industry and what's really going on.
  5. Since we're on the topic of UTIs in cats I was hoping someone would be able to help me. I have a female cat who is 7.5 years old and has had blood in her urine on and off for a few years. Last month I noticed she seemed to be in a lot of pain so I decided to suck up the money issue and take her to a vet. The vet did some tests and an x-ray. The x-ray didn't show anything unusual, but the tests were abnormal. She had heavy crystals in her urine and several other things where off kilter (I think ph balance or something along those lines). The vet told me she'd have to forever go on prescription food (Royal Canin Veterinary Diet Feline Urinary SO 33 Dry Food), prescibed some antibiotics and wanted to see her again in two weeks. Two weeks rolled around and he reran some tests. He said the crystals were getting smaller but she wasn't doing as well as she should be. The tests results were still slightly abnormal. He gave her another seven days of antibiotics and wants to see her again this Wednesday. As I mentioned Daphne has had blood in her urine before. I did some reading about it when it first happened and realized it was time to upgrade her diet. I went from "normal" grade food to Purina's Urinary Health food and the blood cleared up. The money situation hasn't been so great so I stopped buying the higher grade food. A few months later the blood started showing up again and that's when I took her in. After a day on the Royal Canin food the blood cleared up and she seemed less moody (she is already a moody cat to begin with). I have this gut feeling that the vet will want to see her again in another two weeks after the upcoming visit on Wednesday. My question is does he really have to see her again? I know it's hard to say since I don't have the test results with me, but it seems a little much. I love my cats more than anything, and I'd do anything I can for them, but I don't have the extra $250-300 dollars a visit to keep doing the same tests over and over again. I also don't think it's fair to keep putting her through all the poking and prodding. I was also wondering why there is prescription food? Is it simply to keep the cost inflated? I've talked to a few other people about this and no one has been able to come up with an answer. It seems ridiculous that the quality of "normal" pet food is so low and you need a vet to give you a presciption for the decent stuff. Appreciate any help.
  6. I've been a bowler since I was ten or so (came in third in the state last year) and that's the one dilema I have with the sport. Leather is used for the slide, and I've yet to come across a bowling shoe that uses another material for it. As a result, I refuse to get a new pair of shoes unless I find a completely non leather pair. Djshrew, I'd love to see the bowling shoes you mentioned. It'd seriously make my year to own a pair!
  7. Thanks for the warm welcomes! Thanks for the heads up about Veggie Fest Robert. I'm a little less than an hour away. I've wanted to go to it for the last two years, but schedules never seemed to workout. This year I'm bringing along a few fellow veggies and meat eaters ... should be a lot of fun!
  8. Sci-fi is awesome. It’s the reason I love to read, write, draw, basically the reason I love anything that has to do with being creative and my imagination. Jules Verne and H.G. Wells have been two of my favorite authors since before I could read. If there’s a new alien-centric show I’ll gladly give it a chance. Indie flick about the future or someone with special abilities? I’m in! One of the things that I think is so great about sci-fi is that it crosses so many other genres that if done well it makes a great impact. It really makes you think. I really enjoyed Serenity, but have failed to see a single episode of Firefly ... just another thing on my to do list. Lately I’ve been really into classic films and have an exhaustive list of classic sci-fi films I hope to watch before school starts up again. Then there are those cheesy B movies that I always enjoy ... Oh! I’m also a big comic book junkie; fantasy, sci-fi, horror, adventure, romance, mystery and all that good stuff!
  9. Hi all, I've been checking out this board on and off for a few years and figured now would be as good of a time to get active as ever. I'll be twenty in less than a month and have been vegan for a little over two years (vegetarian for three years before that). I chose the veggie lifestyle because of ethical reasons, but over the years I've come to realize how awesome the health benefits are! I'm currently pursuing a degree in anthropology (double major in either Classics or French) and plan to follow it all the way to the doctorate level so I can specialize in forensics. I'm a strong supporter of animal rights and tend to pay special attention to vivisection issues because the scientific community is something I will most likely be dealing with for quite a long time. My hobbies and interests are so varied that it's impossible to list even a small portion of them, but I'd have to say that I enjoy pretty much anything that has to do with creativity, learning, and expanding my mind as well as meeting people who have anything to say (which is pretty much everyone to some degree). As far as athleticism goes, I played softball for a decade and considered playing in college. As much as I enjoy it I'm not really into all the politics involved and remembered that before I decided to join the team. I do bowl, have been for the last ten years, and ended up winning a couple of scholarships from the state ang regional youth programs. I don't work out nearly as much as I used to (something I hope to fix), but I do play tennis often and use tai chi for meditative purposes. I'm excited to be an active member of the group; this place always seems to have something interesting going on! Colee
