  1. Hi Kollision,

It is $500 for the gala. This expensive, but at least it includes a full course gourmet vegan meal prepared by some of the finest in North America, drinks (I think), and a full evening of migling with stars like Charlize Theron, Kim Basinger, Alec Baldwin, Wendy Malick, Alicia Silervstone, Bill Maher, Gillian Anderson, Carmen Electra (I think), and a whole bunch of others. IT includes an awards ceremony, red carpet stuff, etc.

FOr more info on this gala go to PETA25.com.

I would LOVE to save my money towards this event and attend. BUT so far, you are the only one that has responded (not that your not enough ). I think Ash (Chesty Leroux had mentioned some time ago that she is unable to make it. But maybe things have changed?

    ANd what about Rob?

And everybody else on this site that is interested in going to this star-studded event to help animals.

SO RESPOND TO THIS POST ALREADY PEOPLE!!!!

I would love to go and take my girlfriend with me. She and I are active with peta doing mostly kfc demo's here in louisville (where kfc/yum brands are headquartered). I do need all the information though so please get it to me as soon as you can!

  2. Hello!

42yo man, divorced but engaged, ethical vegetarian for 14 years. Currently lacto-veg, but was vegan for the first 7 or 8 years.

Just started weight training about 2 1/2 months ago as a means to lose weight. I need to lower my BFI another 3- 4%, and I'll be happy in that regard. I have no idea how far I want to go with bodybuilding, other than that I have no interest in reaching a competitive level. I just want to be fit and to look good. I'm making progress in that area.

I work out in my apartment with free weights. I don't like gyms. I took creatine for a little while, but stopped. I'll probably start up again, if only to finish the bottle I already have. I don't take any other supplements other than a multi-vitamin, but after reading a few threads here I am considering protein shakes.

The only drawback to the exercise, that I can think of, is that I'm afraid to get any new tattoos for fear of them becoming distorted by muscle growth!

    Dan

I am all over this one! Trust me 3-4% is not that hard to drop with enough work but you have to stay on it!!!! Congrats on the 14 year veggie kick, that is impressive and keep it up.

As far as free weights go, they are the best for building muscle but are they are one of the ways most people get injured. Make sure you are not doing more than your joints/tendans and ligaments can support!

I was worried about the tattoo thing too at first but none of mine have stretched so bad that they look distorted. Actually I think they look better! But even if they do get a little stretched out you can always get color filled back in.

  3. Hey gang....

Thanks again for the warm welcome.

Ok.... since I posted last, I've been trying to gain a lot by eating a lot, as suggested by everyone. I've been eating relatively healthy... sandwiches with veggie lunchmeat (the IVES stuff).. i'm not a strict vegan.. so if something has egg in the ingredients i'm not going to freak out... but for the most part i try to buy fully vegan stuff.. sometimes the selection is very slim though, where i buy groceries.

so yeah... veggie lunchmeat sandwiches (on italian bread)... vegan cheese on some of the sandwiches (most of the time it's just the fake turkey or fake bologna....) tortilla chips with each sandwich usually... veggie burgers, etc. and i drink a lot of water and sweetened iced tea (not in the can-- the lipton just add water stuff... i love that stuff).

right now i'm pulling in about 2600 calories a day. my goal is 3500 but it's hard to do that.

i have been working out steadily... but when i sit on my bench and do my preacher curls, i look down and there's my gut, seemingly bigger than ever. haha.

i know it's hard to get rid of stomach fat but i definitely need to get rid of it. am i going about things the right way? gaining a lot of mass by eating all day?

i do 2 sets of 20 sit-ups after my lifting session, which is 4 times a week with a day of rest after 2 days of lifting... and then two days rest after the second 2 days of lifting.

any advice is always appreciated.... i'm new to the vegan bodybuilding thing... i just hate my damn gut. everything else is looking pretty good though, my pecs and stuff are getting there... arms definitely, too. it's hard to work my legs on the bench i have, but i do what i can (can't do squats... everything's set up where i'd hurt myself if i pull the bar off the bench to do squats.) i do other stuff though, like calf raises and lunges and stuff like that.

    thanks guys and girls!

    -skip

You will probably notice a little fat gain in your gut from bulking and trust me it will go away when you start cutting. Here are my suggestions from what I read.

Try to add some other abs excercises that will also work your obliques. It is nice to do define the whole are around your belly.

Make sure you are eating a lot of protien and carbs especially right after you work out and right before bed.

Trust me, all your work will be worth the effort!!!

  4. About 5 or 6 years ago I got into High Intensity Training.

I read everything I could get my hands on by Ellington Darden, Mike Mentzer, Dr. Douglas McGuff, Arthur Jones, Ken Hutchins, Aaron Zickerman, etc.

I did Heavy Duty, SuperSlow, Power of Ten, traditional Nautilus workouts, etc.

In January I started the Power of Ten/Slow Burn workouts. Once a week, for 20 minutes.

I did get stronger, but my physique started to look like I was 41 (whatever that means). So, to fight the fat I began Airdyning. Nothing.

About 6 weeks ago I layed down the HIT training. I went back to more traditional workouts, and am slowly adding movements, sets and reps to each workout. I am feeling better then I have in a long time. I am starting to look better then I have in a long time (not that I was a fat slob or anything).

I am doing no cardio what-so-ever. I am lifting 3 days a week, trying to cut out the unnecessary sugar from my diet, and stronger then I have been in a long time.

A few goals are to do 100 straight push ups again. I did 50 last week on a bet with my health class. The little farts were pretty impressed when the old man dropped and did 50 straight without stopping. I would also like to do 500 straight hindu squats, and get up to 20 pull-ups.

At the end of summer, when school begins again, I'll post some photos. It gives me something to work toward.

    Anyway, have excellent workouts today.

    Jon

I think that it is only a waste if you did not learn anything from it. If you come out of this being able to do 100 push ups then I applaud you. Not many 20 year olds can even do that and to do that at 41 is great!

  5. "My goals right now: To be able to do handstand pushups well, and do a set of 20 pullups (my record is a set of 18)"

good goals, you will get them!

  6. " focused before that just on losing weight, as I was quite a bit heavier, and lost about 110 lbs, all said and done. Now it's time to fine-tune things a bit - bring on the visible abs!!"

good job, the abs will come!

  7. day 2 (back and abs)

barbell shrug / barbell shrug behind the back

    standing dumbbell upright row

    bent over barbell row

    middle back shrug

    one-arm dumbbell row

    stiff leg barbell good morning

    deadlifts

    alternate heel touchers

    barbell side bend

    bent knee hip raise

    cross-body crunch

    crunches

    flat bench leg pull-in

    jackknife situp

    situps

okay, these are all exercises which look good to me, but that are way too much! which should i skip? or should i change the plan every week to do a larger amount of various stuff?

does anyone know some exercises to train the latissimus dorsi? i don't have any machines or cable stuff to do the exercises listed on the exercise directory.

thats all for now, keep it up!

You can get rid of the deadlifts because they should be working your hamstrings not your back. I think doing a lot of abs is good though, it just takes a while.

  9. so im comming up one month of working out. ive managed to get my man boobs undercontroll which is a good thing. . my belly is still chillen, but it will go with time. i have a question though. it seems like my right arm is developing much faster than the left arm (im right handed, and assume this is sort of normal) i do mostly free weights, with the exception of when i work my pecks. in order to get both arms aproximately the same size, or have them develop at the same time sould i do more free weights and less machines, or more machines and less free weights?

    thanks in advance

    anthony

This is totally normal, I am bigger on my right as well. Just make sure that when you are lifitng that you concentrate on even distrobution between your right and left side. and watch your form with the left, it might be a little off.

  10. Both the US and UK vegan societies classify honey as an animal product and therefore not vegan.

Bees do a tremendous amount of work to produce and store their honey. They are making it for themselves, not for us to take. Local or free range or whatever, there is no way to maintain a hive and steal the honey without killing bees in the process.

Since it isn't vegan, is stolen from a hard working being, can't be gotten without killing and isn't necessary for human nutrition, wouldn't it be better just to avoid it? There are plenty of vegan alternatives to honey.

Personally I agree. I just wanted everyone to know why some vegans argue that it is ok. Btw I am not fully vegan yet, there is still a bunch of things in my cabnets and fridge I still need to eat. You see as much as I would like to be vegan I cannot make the full plunge until I eat all I have bought. I am not into wasting if I bought it so once it is all gone there will be no more non-vegan purchases.

  11. Have you ever had any injuries to your shoulder? That could be the problem. If so put your hands in closer like when working out the tris, it should release the tension on your shoulders. Also do rotator cuff exercises found here:

    http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/dorian1.htm

I had the same problem for a while. This helped a lot.

grab the bar where you would normally grab it but dont lift it, leave it on the rack. Look at where your right hand and visually mark the bar at the inside of your hand. Now move your hand closer in so that the outside of your palm aligns where the inside of your palm was. Your hand should be exactly 1 palm length inside of where you normally put them. Do the same with your left and try the press, if it still hurts try going in by half-palm lengths.

Also it is important to do those rotator cuff lifts. I would take 2 weeks off from the press and do those instead. 2 weeks of waiting is better then a lifetime injury.
