  1. Hi my name is shine. I just started doing p90x. I noticed there were lots of questions on this site, and a few answers. I started a blog http://p90xforvegans.blogspot.com/ it contains the breakdown of the fatshredder diet, and recipes. I love cooking and thought i would share my ideas with you. hope it helps.

Welcome. I like your blog. The P90X site really doesn't have much for vegans. It's mostly meat oriented with some token vegetarian advice tossed in. It's a start. This is a great place for vegan advice.

For diet and nutrition, check out Brendan Brazier's book, Thrive. There's one book for diet and another for workout programs.

I have noticed threads in both Insanity and P90X on the Team Beachbody site dedicated to vegans, so you KNOW we're not alone, at least! Amazingly enough in the recipe book they gave, they provided some vegan recipes including a dessert one. I was pleasantly impressed. That does NOT ordinarily happen.

  2. I started P90X 3 weeks ago, but skipped a couple days this week. I think I was overdoing it, so I need to cut back. My main problem is that I'm in a weight-loss contest right now, and I have 3 weeks left to lose a few more pounds. I pack on muscle so quickly when working out (I lift heavy), that the scale won't move. Even though I know it's BS to base things on the number on the scale, the contest people don't have a clue. So...backing off to get my money.

I'm not as upset as I thought, though. I love the P90X program, and have bought Insanity as well so that after my round of P90X I can do a hybrid. I'm thinking these two sets of videos can be mixed and matched for the next several years.

Anyway, I'll be ready to get back into it when this stupid contest is over in 3 weeks.

Ok, maybe the $1,500 prize isn't THAT stupid!

You're the inverse of me! When do you plan to start your hybrid?

Nice!! I am doing the Insanity program and thinking of doing a P90X/Insanity hybrid for round 2. I will definitely have to check out your blog.

    Welcome aboard!

  4. Hey guys, thought this looked like the place I should be

My name is Raechelle Chase, I am an IFBB Pro Figure competitor from NZ.

I have recently started on a raw/vegan diet leading up to my next competitions, The Houston Pro October 23rd, followed by the Boarder States (figure) Pro on October 30th. So far so good. The amazing thing is since I started this diet 4 weeks ago I have not craved animal protein at all! This is quite amazing since chicken & fish have been something I would eat 3-4 times a day for the past 2 years and now it’s been a month without and I don’t even miss it yay!

I was worried in the beginning that I would lose muscle so I am monitoring this by doing weekly body fat tests and now that I’m full swing back into training, not only have I not lost muscle, but I have actually gained muscle!! Another huge achievement. I am so glad that my eyes have been opened and I can start to live a healthy life and inspire people I meet along the way to do the same.

I look forward to your advice over the next 11 weeks

You are officially my new hero. Thanks for joining us! And welcome.

  5. Yup, that's the idea. It's about going for food with low calorie density but high nutrient density.

    +1

The prob with most fad and low cal or carb diets is that

    1) You don't get all the nutrients you need, hence why you're hungry

    2) You don't learn how to eat for when you're "done", hence why most put back on the weight.

I've ranted about this in one of my blogs, but this is the fact of life: if you're looking to lose 20 or more pounds, you're not on a diet...you're engaging in a lifestyle change. Does it mean you can't eat the same foods you used to? Not necessarily, but you WILL have to eat a very different diet, and you CANNOT go active.

I lost 100 lbs once and gained some of it back when I went inactive owing to lack of time and finances. I've spent the past six month correcting this, and I'm not even to where I was yet. But in the process I learned valuable lessons such as:

    1) Putting your body in starvation mode kills your metabolism and forces you to retain and/or gain weight

    2) Being on a diet doesn't mean being hungry all the time

    3) You have to be active and bring your metabolism back up through exercise in order to be sure you can take in the necessary nutrients to fuel your body for said workouts

It's tough but I did it. I used to eat under 1k calories per day, now I eat about 1400-1600 on average and I weigh 25 lbs less.

  6. Water, and if I were you I'd find out how much fiber you're taking in. There may have been too big of a jump too soon and so your body's reacting. While it CAN adjust over time, the best way to deal with it is drink water, stay active, don't eat big meals.

Bloating can happen for different reasons, and when it happens to me it's a huge deal. Huge like I gain 7" in my waist--no joke, I've measured!

  7. I was told by a friend who's spent around $500 on a personal trainer in the last 2 years and made some major changes, that effectiveness of early morning cardio on an empty stomach on your body in terms of burning fat cannot be achieved by even double the effort any other time.

The logic was that in the morning after you've gone to the bathroom your body contains no food, so when you do cardio for 40 mins or more it hits your FAT and burns lots of it.

The statement that this effect cannot be replicated by even TWICE the effort in the evening or other times was a little hard to digest.

I did some online googling and found variations of the truth.

    What are your thoughts?

Honestly, the only reason why I don't eat before I do ANY cardio, especially in the morning, is that the stomach bloating/water retention and other "fun" stuff ain't worth it. If I'm starving before a workout, I'll down half a handful of granola.

Maybe I just have an overly sensitive digestive system, maybe it was what I ate, but the last time I did it my waist bloated SEVEN INCHES above normal size. Thanks, but...no thanks.

  8. Weight lifters get the short shrift on the fabled BMI test, too. For us, it is definitely NOT an accurate measurement of "fitness," since we get recorded as "fat" due to our dense mass. A while back, I stepped on a scale during a medical check up and the nurse's eyes got wide. She looked at me, then looked at the scale, then looked at me again. She had me step off, then recalibrated the scale, then had me get back on. I smirked and finally confessed that I was a weight lifter. She said, "What's that?"

I don't go to doctors anymore.

    Baby Herc

Omfgs, that's like what happened to this woman I know. She went to the doctor's and the nurse kept poking her and asking her about all the "hard tissue" she had. She had to tell the idiot that it was muscle, duh.

I think these people are so used to dealing with those who eat Mickey D's and sit on the couch all day that we're just freaks to them.

  9. Hey! Just wanted to say hi!

I've been away from the forum a lot lately...just been using FB and Twitter mostly on my 8-week tour so far, but got back in the community this past week and wanted to give a shout out.

    Great to have you here!!!

Hey there! Great to be here as well. Yeah, I've been following you over at FB/Twitter as Blue Rose/TeaAddictedGeek. Blue Rose is more my personal account where I tend to talk more about veganism, Doctor Who, and various other fandoms. It's also uncensored. I'm more apt to discuss fitness on the TeaAddicted accts, and I get a lot of questions there. You know, the usual: "What do you do for protein?"

I can't tell you how many times I run into people who ask me or others about being vegan and bodybuilding. I've been emailed under my coach account, seen postings up at Muscle and Fitness Hers, you name it. I typically refer them to your book and if possible, this site and veganfitness.net. I also luuuurve showing your picture to people who insist vegans are all dying, "transparent", and anorexic. Call it a guilty pleasure.

Good luck on your tour!! It sounds like a lot of fun. I personally love and adore traveling and wish I had more time and money to do both--especially time.

    Take care,

    Andrea

  10. I did the first first insanity video today. It was the Plyometric Cardio Circuit.

I think the routine is very good. It is not as bad as I thought it would be and there are plenty of breaks. It is harder than the plyo in P90X as it is more cardio focused. The P90X is harder in the sense that your legs will burn to no end. I didn't feel as much burn in the insanity, but I did run out of energy with the heart really pounding. It is shorter than the P90X video, but I like that. The P90X videos have a few too many breaks between each exercise. Insanity is bam bam bam bam bam break.

Most of the exercises are simple that you figure out the move real quick. Some are a bit awkward to start, but once you get the step, it is easy to keep them going. The editing is a bit annoying sometimes because they show Shaun T do one move, then jump to someones face before you have the move down and you are just whipping arms and legs around with no clear idea of how to do the exercise until they jump back to Shaun T. But most exercises are repeated 3 or 4 times each, so at least you know it for the next round.

The marketing before the thing starts is so annoying. There must be 5 minutes of advertisements. I kept having to fast forward through it and it seemed like a lot for a bunch of videos in which you paid. I will rip them to my computer and cut out the marketing crap.

Shaun T is a good motivator. I like Tony Horton better for his humor and his focus on form and technique. Shaun T doesn't get as detailed into the form even during stretching. I like the detail because even if you know what the perfect form is, just hearing someone say "back straight" will help remind you when you are tired.

I have never gone through an entire liter of water on such a short workout before. You definitely will sweat like mad.

I do like that there is more stretching than P90X. The stretches are more intense and for a longer period of time. I also found that at the end of the workout, the stretching is easier then after any P90X video which means my body doesn't get quite as warmed up in P90X as in insanity.

Insanity has more side to side than P90X which I think is better for balance and stabilizer muscles.

Overall, I like it very much and I am excited to see the other videos. I will post more impressions as I move through the videos.

I am also doing the Insanity program and just finished my second week. It's tough, but I LOVE it! And I'm definitely seeing improvements in stamina, body, health--you name it.

And oh yeah, I go through two bottles of water during the workout. You WILL sweat.

  11. Hello from Austria

Have you tried counting calories? I've been desperately trying to lose fat this spring, but didn't really get anywhere for some time. I've been eating about 800 cals a day. I didn't feel healthy or strong any more after some time, so I finally started to do some research on the internet, and only then realized that 800 cals are below what I need. So I've started eating about 1200 calories daily and losing fat was much easier.

To make a long story short: Maybe you're eating too few calories?

    +1

Can't begin to tell you how many people couldn't lose weight until they ate more, self included.
