  1. noticed that Vince McMahon was on the cover of Muscle & Fitness 60 years old!! seems awfully big for that age don't you think Nevertheless, I hope I can maintain a high level of fitness at 60+
  2. anyone see the UCLA game last night? it was UNREAL!!! I almost wrote UCLA off but kept watching for some reason. I'm totally into fantasy sports leagues, so if anyone is interested ...
  3. But, you still took the time to respond Yes, I agree that some hypotheticals are useless. But ya gotta admit....they can be a lot of fun! I love the "what - if" scenarios. How better to truly explore your own ethics?
  4. Yes! As much as I take pride in being Canadian, this is one of those times where you have to feel ashamed of your country. Actually, I'm pretty ashamed of the human race too! How vain and heartless can you be??? I'm not sure how to get the message through to these people. What do all of you do when you come accross someone wearing fur?
  5. Oh, you very lucky Jay!!!! My cat is a good communicator too...only it's with her claws & teeth
  6. I'm able to break free every now and then, but like most vices...once you have one or two........... I'm a bit of a sweet freak...always have been I refuse to ingest aspartame and I really can't afford the HUGE amount of calories in sugar laden soft drinks (counterproductive to my bodybuilding goals) aaaaarrrghhhh!!!! (cry of disgruntlement, dismay and just all around frustration)
  7. Oh I know what I would do. Before I got too weak I'd start trying to kill. Same if it was me and some humans. Sorry guys. MENTAL NOTE: do not go on outdoor adventure trip with Jay
  8. "some people are like slinkies, not really good for anything, but it makes you smile when you push them down the stairs"
  9. I was thinking about the movie Castaway the other day, and it made me think about what I would do if I were in that situation. many questions come to mind: * if you were literally starving to death, could you kill and eat meat? * where would u draw the line? Fish, rodents, birds, hogs? * could u kill in self defense? what if your life was threatened by a carniverous animal? * for that matter, what if your child or pet was being attacked by an animal? Being a city dwellar, I have a relatively easy time being vegan. what if I was born and raised in the far north with the inuit or in an african tribe in an arid environment? We are so fortunate to have the choices we do. As incomprehensible it seems that I could kill an animal, if I were placed in "survival mode"...... I'm just not sure......................
  10. We have a dog named Kelsey who is a 15 year old black lab cross from the humane society. Kelsey, I must say has been the most loyal & loveable friend that I could ever imagine! I wish most people were like her. Non-judgmental, unconditional love, and the spirit of a 5 year old dog in a 15 year old body. She has overcome 2 major surgeries: hip dysplasia when she was 2 and torn ligaments in her knee when she was 6. Until the ligament surgery, she was my faithful training partner when I was training for the marathon. (don't worry ...only for part of the long runs) We also have two gerbils, three fish and ...then there's our cat OREO. Where do I begin..... how about..... We picked out Oreo at a shelter, and she was an adorable, cuddly little thing. Little did we know that she was a feline CUJO attacking without warning, (I have the scars to prove it) Actually, it's taken about 3 years but she is coming around. (as long as you realize that she is the boss) Kind of sad really,I definitely think she was abused. I'll never forget when I tried to pet her one day and she shrunk back in a cringe..... She still tends to eat every meal like its her last. Hopefully she realizes or will realize that she is in a safe place.
  11. Today, they had a staff lunch, rolling out the new line of steak products. I refused to participate, but the Chef made me a nice vegan stir fry It's tough to work in a place that sells meat products, but it has created opportunities for me as well. I've been exposed to some new soy products I hadn't prieviously been aware of, and I can now "bend the ears" of suppliers and restaurant owners about having vegan options. (of course I also subtly invite coworkers to my neighborhood vegan-friendly restaurant and have them hooked on falafel) Barbeques are far too prevalent in the workplace, don't you think? How do you all cope/manage when the barbeque season starts at work?
  12. lol my 10 year old son introduced me to that one. pretty funny stuff!!
  13. well, at this point...anything my body will allow lol I grew up with soccer, volleyball, and curling (it's a canadian thing!) A nasty ankle injury put an end to most high impact sports. I did some long distance running for a few years, completed a few half and one full marathon, now I've set my sights on body building. (this should be good....been a hard gainer all my life) It's all good! just want to keep active and healthy!
  14. meat and dairy are no problem for me. In fact, I've started to feel repulsed by meat when I see it (natural progression I suppose) For me, my vice is always sweets! Coooookies mmmmmmm!!!!! I agree that the toughest thing is to get really excited about a product you find, only to find out that it contains "modified milk ingredients" I've definitely had the odd accidental dairy or meat (usually a restaurant screw up) in my diet but hey...ya can't beat yourself up over things you can't control. anyone have a good vegan cookie recipe???
  15. I found you on a Google search yesterday and I'm already hooked! Funny how motivating it can be, just having a group of similar minded individuals together. I am a sportsminded 43 yearold father of 2. Our family has been vegetarian for 2 years and counting. I have been moving towards Vegan over the last year. (My diet is vegan, but I still must transition my wardrobe, wallet etc....) I have always been an animal lover, but it somehow took me until I was 40 to fully realize the consequences of my actions. Our society is so spoiled, so easy......... the meat is just there in the restaurant or at the supermarket fully prepared. When I finally "woke up" and realized where the meat was coming from, I realized that I could NEVER kill an animal to eat it.......such hypocrisy I have lived mith all these years! The more research I did, the more committed I became. Watching Peaceable Kingdom was quite a powerful experience for me. I am fascinated with statistics and how the relate to vegetarianism/veganism.... such as the environmental impact of raising a dairy cow, or how many animals are "saved" by not eating meat or by inviting meat eating friends over for meatless meals. (small steps lead to big leaps!) Anyone know a good source for such information? On a lighter note, I look forward to reading more threads and in participating in discussions relating to fitness, diet & ethics Glad to be here!!!!!!
