  1. What do you put in your shakes? Mine taste very good, and are only a scoop of protein powder (50/50 pea and rice mix), a frozen banana, frozen blueberries, and nut milk.
  2. After reading this article and this one I decided that buying commercial honey was not ideal, so packaged items with honey in them are out. If I ever meet a beekeeper who does not kill their bees, destroy queens, or trap them for winter I might consider honey - heck, maybe someday I'll "foster" some bees myself. But for now I don't want to support the exploitation of bees, especially because they're my favorite insects.
  3. I voted non-career. I work in a business casual environment, 40 hours a week, carpool to work, hourly wage, but I get health insurance. I spend the vast majority of my time at work browsing the internet.... Someday when I finish my degree I'll move on to something I actually care about, though.
  4. If I could feed my cat vegan I would, but as it is vegan food is more expensive and I would rather not run the risk of screwing up my kitty and possibly endangering her. She gets decent quality meat-based food. It's not ideal, but the world is sometimes not ideal. My pets and my family's pets have always been adopted from shelters, and speutered. I believe in doing my part to halt the explosive growth of domestic cat populations by helping catch stray cats for speuter and release programs, only adopting cats (and a dog, maybe someday), and encouraging friends to speuter their pets and their pets' kittens when they're old enough. I also think that since these animals were, in a way, created by humans, we have an obligation to control their populations and to care for those that are abandoned or abused. In the end, I hope to inspire other people to take better care of their animal dependents, help curb damaging population growth, and take in cats and other animals that need a loving home. As much as I love snakes I don't think I could have one as a pet, because I love rodents so much. I do have a pet tarantula which I feed crickets; that's probably not "vegan" but tarantulas live a long time and she's my friend now, I have to take care of her. The crickets are gently cared for and have a nice mini tank with tubing to jump around on. I'm not sure how I feel about abolitionist stances against owning animals as pets. Like I said, I support animal welfare and rescue groups, and in the cases of pets like hamsters and guinea pigs, I know ours came from friends of the family and not breeding mills or anything nasty. At least rodents are vegetarian, too. At the end of the day, I'm fascinated by all critters, running an crawling, and will most likely continue to have pets for the rest of my life.
  5. 7 AM, 9 AM, 11 AM, 12:30 PM, 2:30 PM, 4:30 PM, 5:30 PM, 8:30 PM. I snack and have light meals all throughout the day.
  6. I actually use tofu as a replacement for eggs. The secret ingredient is kala namak, a black salt with a sulfurous ("eggy") taste! One can buy it for cheap on Amazon. My tofu scramble is: 4-7 oz extra firm tofu (depending on my appetite) a couple handfuls chopped broccoli several cloves of sliced garlic olive oil turmeric dried thyme salt pepper nutritional yeast kala namak Heat a cast-iron pan (or nonstick, it doesn't matter; I just like the added iron from cast iron) over medium-low heat. Add the olive oil (this temperature should be well below its smoking point), let it heat a little, then start frying the garlic. After about 20 seconds, crumble the tofu into the pan and add your desired amount of broccoli (you can also use other veggies, brocc is just my favorite!). Lightly salt and pepper. Add turmeric to the tofu for color. Add a few dashes thyme. Fry for several minutes, being sure to turn all the pieces and make sure the garlic doesn't burn (burnt garlic is bitter). Add nutritional yeast all over and continue frying until the tofu and broccoli are at the desired "done-ness." Gently sprinkle kala namak over everything - you can adjust as necessary, because remember, it's salty too so you don't want to go overboard. Tuck in! This is one of my favorite breakfasts.
  7. Hello all. I've been lurking for a bit and decided I should introduce myself! I have been a vegetarian since I was about 5 years old and decided I hated the taste of meat and fish, lol. My parents spent probably 7 years trying to change my mind and finally gave up when I was in middle school, thank goodness. I was a vegan for a short time from 2006-2007 but fell off of the bandwagon due to crippling depression, moving away from home, and (most importantly) not knowing how to cook! I had a small cancer scare last year (all resolved now) and have been changing my lifestyle a lot. First I quit smoking (cigarettes.... ). Then I started learning how to cook. Learning how to cook renewed my interest in plant-based nutrition and cooking. I checked out cookbooks, started practicing, and in May realized I had a gym membership under my parents' account (despite being 21, heh) and started working out! Yay! All of these things culminated in going back to veganity, this time armed with the ability to pay for my own food, better lifestyle choices, and a working knowledge of the kitchen to make this go-round sustainable. I've only been working out for 2 months but I already have TONS more stamina, more strength (especially in my legs because I bike-commute daily) and more self-confidence. The lack of dairy and going light on wheat has almost completely eliminated my bloating problems before, I actually want to go clothes shopping again. I'm looking forward to further fitness and cooking adventures. I'm lucky to have a lot of support from my mother, who is moving towards less and less meat, and my boyfriend, who is a supportive omnivore and enjoys veg food. (P.S. How long will my posts need to be approved by a moderator?)
  8. Whether or not something is "natural" is very irrelevant. Appealing to nature is known as the naturalistic fallacy. The general concern with UV is that it is more likely to cause skin cancer in those with a family history of skin cancer, a family history of cancer in general, and with lighter, more sensitive skin. I agree it is not bad, but I personally would advocate more time in the sun over a tanning bed.
