gluten-free, soy-free sources of protein?
HorseSense replied to csrpj's topic in Health & Nutrition Programs
Bowls and bowls of legumes. And with grains even better. For example if 1 cup of cooked beans/lentils/peas would generally yield about 24 grams of protein you'd need to take in about 6 cups of it a day. Not too difficult when you figure 1 or 2 cups per meal spread throughout your day. Also take into consideration that a good portion of the carbs in legumes is fiber, so it works out as a high protein food. -
Well, as far as the not being able to maintain muscle mass while not working out bit, I can't say I haven't given that thought. But if there were anything to that (which I don't think there is, because protein is protein is protein no matter where it comes from) then I would have to wonder is it more natural because the body only retains what it is genetically predisposed to retain, or genetically predisposed to adaptation to retain it. I would think from a purely functional point of view, the body would want to be as efficient as possible, which would mean getting rid of anything it is not using or is not going to use in the very near future. So my thoughts on the subject of being less likely to RETAIN muscle mass on a vegan diet as opposed to animal based would center around efficiency, rather than deficiency.

Stay away from GMO soy which is 99% of the soy/soy ingredients/additives in food at the grocery store. It has to say non-GMO soy or if it is organic soy it is automatically non-GMO. Otherwise, EAT ALL YA WANT! David

Totally agree. I like to call it the BS Mass Index, because that's what it is. lol -
One option that is always open is a plant only tank. As in my new one, I don't know that I'll have any fish in it, because it is so small. I can't confine anything I don't think will exactly appreciate it. We don't have to see them as just a box of fish. They can be much more than that, and with the growing surge in live plant tanks, a whole new world of options is available to explore in the hobby. chrisjs - Most fish being commonly sold at pet stores can live on a vegan diet. Many african cichlids can't have anything else, or they get bloated up and die. Still there are others who are strictly carnivorous and for this reason cannot be mixed with other fish because of their specialized diets. These usually aren't the 'common' fish at pet stores, though. One other point to make is that although there is the extreme which is the puppy mill, fish are somewhat different. Goldfish for instance come from ponds where they were very happy, and can be happy in a new home (if it is proper). Fish will NOT breed if they are not in ideal or happy conditions. The corals sold for reef tanks in the hobby more and more are being propagated from what already exists in captivity, not being taken from the wild. Many laws are being passed all over the world to prevent "reef farming" now so as not to deplete the habitats. They suffer enough from pollution and natural disasters. In certain cases the reef keeping hobby is serving to replenish desolate areas because of what exists in abundance in the hobby by dedicated enthusiasts.

Mine; www.youtube.com/watch?v=IAyuUVYja8Y Just uploaded that last night (I think - lol). Sorry about the stupid beginning, it was an old video on my phone I found last night when I was really bored and was really bored when I took the video. lol I have been keeping fish since I was around 6 yrs old. I've kept all kinds successfully. As far as "implications" I believe animals can have it better sometimes if given a good home with proper care than in the wild on their own. But that's just my opinion. I have watched time after time after time, fish get used to their surroundings and get to know every inch and detail of their "home" in an aquarium and "grow into it" and get used to it and become extremely happy little creatures. Your tank sounds good. Would love to see pics! David

This is probably funnier to me than it is to you.....

Great stuff! You make it look like a lot of fun. And I can tell you're a great athlete! -
The reason mainstream bodybuilders (and victims of "bro science" everywhere) take in incredibly high amounts of protein is because it is not as readily available as a fuel source, thus less likely to be stored as fat like carbs or fat would be. The pros and competitors use it as a "safety net" against fat gain. If you are taking in extra, unused calories from carbs or fat it can readily be stored as fat. Extra protein calories, however, can be either excreted by the kidneys or take extra energy to be converted to small amounts of fuel. This causes extra strain on the kidneys though. If you have good strong kidneys with no history of problems its probably ok for you to consume extra proteins but I think some should be on the safe side and moderate their intake. Lower, moderate amounts of protein are more than adequate for natural bodybuilding as long as you're getting needed calories from carbs. I believe the vegan diet has a huge advantage in this, because many of our carbs include fiber which helps regulate well everything really.

That is just....wow! Being a Southerner I'm definitely going to try this! Especially interested in the "quinoa cornbread". O.o

Probably not what you want to hear but from looking up the ingredients of the bk veggie burger online it doesn't even resemble something I would call "food". Have you thought of making your own "bk burger" with a more healthy, vegan meat substitute/buns/condiments? You can tell your brain you're eating a "bk burger" and it could possibly just ween you off of this fast food product. Just my .02.

I have to say I'm really blessed to have such a family as I have. They listen to me without judgment and take me seriously when I talk about different topics and issues, no matter how taboo or "unorthodox" it may seem. My sister, her son, and my mother are all considering coming off of animal products, and my cousin sent my mom this video who then forwarded it to me. One by one we are all making a difference in this world. So if you ever send a friend or loved one anything on the subject of diet, send them this video. It is very simple, to the point, and it IS a START in the right direction. David

30% of calories from protein....

Can't go wrong with adding in legumes, unless you're highly intolerant/don't like the initial gas explosions until your system gets used to them. lol -

His positive energy and (non-arrogant) display of success is what attracted me to take the plunge again, but this time do it RIGHT! There is a lot of misinformation out there about veganism and especially vegan bodybuilding. We all know the meat/dairy industries are making KILLINGS (pun intended I guess) off of this misinformation, so of course they're not keen on exactly getting the truth out there. It is up to grassroots folks like Robert and all of us to carry this message forward. Light dispels the darkness where ever it shows up and once people learn the truth, people who like it anyway, there is NO turning back! David -
I like it! I love that song, can't quite put my finger on the name, but it gets played when I'm listening to Pandora. Been meaning to write it down so I can get it!

Low fat high carb raw vegans....
HorseSense replied to pinkdeacmd's topic in Health & Nutrition Programs
I did 811 (mostly fruit of course) for a few months and I was peeing so much I had to stop drinking water!! Knowing that the purest, healthiest water on earth (processed billions upon billions of times before it even reaches the fruit) was cleaning out my body was the best feeling ever!! -

I'm a youtube junkie and have been for years (no TV - by choice), so that is the very site that taught me to give up taking the "comments" seriously at all. Its ok for affirmation or positive comments you liked about something and you want to give support but the endless childish debates that get started and go on into insult contests are a HUGE waste of time to even read. -
How much would it cost monthly to be vegan?
HorseSense replied to TimeToShine's topic in Health & Nutrition Programs
I'm eating all kinds of veggies, fruit, nuts, fortified organic soy milk, and probably missing something else but the bulk (pun intended) of my diet consists of legumes. I eat lots and lots of legumes throughout the day for my protein and carbs and I get a whole host of everything else nutrition wise from them as well. I was doing split peas, now I'm on a lentil trip. Next gonna try black eyed peas (that's the southerner in me), then maybe pinto beans, or a combination of beans. I mainly get what I need at walmart. In fact my soy milk is Great Value brand and I was shocked to see it was 1) USDA certified organic and 2) so cheap! My expenses come out to a little over $4 a day (about $130/month). This is A LOT cheaper than my previous milk/meat based diet. -

I find a healthy way to look at the "comments" section of most things now is to see them as nothing more than entertainment. Anything beyond that and its just going to upset an intelligent person.
