A bunch of our members mentioned in the New York Times

I love the quote by Williams! “I’m no longer an athlete,” he said. “I’m a warrior now. There’s a big difference. The athletes are just out to get paid. Warriors stand for something.” -
I've battled sleeping problems all my life. Some things that have consistently helped me (and I've tried it all!) have been to stop eating a few hours before bed (I am IFing right now and its GREAT), not doing anything mentally challenging that would stress me out in the slightest, turning out the lights early as someone mentioned and sometimes light a candle (LED candles work great too!) while reading or watching a relaxing movie (nothing along the lines of Terminator, lol) or listening to relaxing music, wearing ear plugs as a couple of you mentioned, and if I'm out (which I have been recently) using a fan for white noise. I tried melatonin and it worked ok for like a week but I don't know it just wasn't strong enough for me after that. But everyone is different.

I don't know of a vegan-based alternative but I've been using this website for quite some time and have found it very helpful; http://nutritiondata.self.com/

Funny you mentioned that. I was going to mention I was out of those foam disposable earplugs, which is why I had to use the fan. lol That kind of property is exactly what I need too! I'd probably go for hikes every day in the woods!

Welcome to the forum from another n00b! I'm also in SC, currently in the Lexington area (close to Columbia) and I used to live in Myrtle Beach! Glad to see you became vegan! There are a lot of nice folks on here so you'll find the help you're looking for here. Happy New Year!! David

Need help with breakdown and meals?
HorseSense replied to Onlybrad's topic in Health & Nutrition Programs
I buy bags of dried split peas. I look them over to pick out anything bad, which is usually only 2 or 3 bad looking peas, wash and rinse them thoroughly several times, cover them in a pot with about 3 inches of water, and bring them to a boil. Then I turn the heat down and let them boil very lightly for about 40 mins and they're done. After doing that you can let them sit for a couple hours off the heat and if not too mushy they settle in the water. I pour out the water on top (takes out some of the gas until your system gets used to them) and store them in containers in the frig. By varieties of fruits and veggies I meant I eat 7 different kinds. Right now I'm enjoying clementines, apples (with natural peanut butter. YUM!), cauliflower, broccoli, carrots, brussell sprouts, and okra. I also have some tomatoes in the frig so I guess that would be 8 until I get rid of them! I munch on walnuts too, and I probably forgot something here and there. lol As far as goat's milk I myself wouldn't chance it unless it were pasteurized. Goats commonly have an intestinal parasite called coccidia, and some have lice, maggots, and other various worms. Some say this is harmless (especially Paleo eaters) but I say it is not without its risks because people do have to be treated sometimes for parasite infestations because of things like this. Even goats that aren't allowed proper eating habits (naturally grazing on all levels, not just grass close to the dirt) have parasite infestations themselves. I mean if you want to do it you can check out what she is letting them eat, etc, and go from there. But IMO you can do much better with something like soy or almond milk, especially fortified. Oh yea and Happy New Year! -
Happy New Year! I did sleep through it. Went right to sleep about half hour before 12 AM. LOL My neighbors went crazy with the fireworks too. I'm a very light sleeper and no way could I even have relaxed with that going on so I turned on my fan I keep by my bed for some white noise (put it on HIGH), covered up my head slightly so the air wouldn't freeze my head, and I was OUT!! I may have to do that more often!! LOL

Yea I don't disagree with the video post (which is why I gave up on TV) but I think you can watch whatever you can grab the good out of. We all have our limits.

Need help with breakdown and meals?

It is very easy to get all your calories if you eat a well rounded plant based diet and especially add legumes to your diet. Right now I get most of my protein from split peas (about 100 grams until my system gets used to them) and plan to increase if my muscle gains aren't up to par. In fact I may even be able to decrease my intake but only time will tell where I go from here. I also get some from nuts, and obviously a variety of veggies and fruits (right now I'm at 7 varieties per day) will give you very high quality protein. Maybe not as much as legumes, seeds, or nuts, but good quality nonetheless! Also, the "Paleo" diet is not natural. We do not have the enzymes to battle any "bad" bacteria lurking in most animal meats, hence it has to be cooked. Even milk is pasteurized and those who drink it raw most likely have parasites in their intestines (not very healthy). -
I don't watch TV anymore either. But I loved some of the ones in those lists. Dukes of Hazard, Laverne and Shirley, Knight Rider, The Jetsons, Tom and Jerry, Scooby Doo were just a few.

He probably supplements with what he took out, so he didn't need it in the food calculator. -
Raw vegan journey
HorseSense replied to liberationstudios's topic in Before/After Photos & Progress Photos & Videos
ah ok. Well that's still doing excellent! -
I voted weetabix because oatmeal doesn't taste that great to me and isn't exactly packed with micronutrients from what I've seen. Weetabix sounds like something that would be fortified, like a nice cereal? So yea currently looking to supplement my diet with a nice cereal myself the vote was a no brainer for me.

how do I NOT bulk up and be muscular?
HorseSense replied to chrisdazed's topic in Health & Nutrition Programs
Cool! It's not something frequently talked about (much less researched) so it's good to know some understand the complexities of the human form. -

HorseSense replied to chrisdazed's topic in Health & Nutrition Programs
Yea, I should have specified. I meant reps beyond that. I'm currently training in the 15 rep range myself and I always gain a little in that range. I meant more in the 20-30 rep range with light weights. But if you're only interested in losing weight and not interested in toned muscle, I would skip the weights altogether and just do exercise/cardio with a maintenance diet. -

When your bicep goes from ten inches to thirteen inches and it's solid as a rock, that's growth. No mistake. The theory of testosterone is only the tip of the iceberg, as they are discovering. Just because you have a chemical, condition, or gene in your body does not make it active or applicable. Despite all our modern discoveries, allopathic medicine hasn't really looked all that deeply into just how the human body works, predominantly because there is little funding for it from companies who want to know how they can market it to their advantage (read: get a return on all that research money). And unless the medical community can take a tally of every single human body on the planet, they don't have all the facts in yet. Truth be told, they tend to form their conclusions on rather biased observations of limited populations. Just like only 3% of the female population is physically able to attain supermodel proportions, only 3% or less are natural bodybuilders, according to the current medical belief. I am one of those women and I think the numbers are actually higher. Being one of the "impossible" statistics has given me insight into the validity of certain widely held truths. It's inspired me to do my own research. The most important thing I've learned is that by the time you hear it broadcast on the health segment of the evening news, it's been heavily marketed. The evening news becomes the commercial for it. I also know why people with "normal" levels of testosterone can be impressive bodybuilders while others can't seem to grow even with injections of the stuff. Hint: it all starts from the neck up and I don't mean attitude. I put on a lot of muscle very fast. Let me repeat that--I put on a lot of muscle very fast. I have been like this since childhood, beating all the boys and girls in the Presidential Fitness Program year after year. I have been courted by the armed forces, boxing gyms, and professional body building trainers. They all wanted me to train for them and represent them. At my old Denver gym, everyone walked up to me with their questions instead of going to the weight room manager. Most of the men in my current gym are intimidated by me; I have to hang out with the big dudes just to feel like a chick. Chris and I were separated at birth. I have all her physical characteristics except my fingers are short. I have never taken drugs in my life other than antibiotics, am mostly a raw vegan, and I even run. Yet, I can still put on muscle so fast that it makes my head spin, and I've been doing it for 22 years. Chris, my advice to you is to experiment with raw vegan recipes and reduce your reps while upping your weights--basically try a form of power lifting. If you still get mass, just lift fewer times per week and/or in shorter segments. Do interval cardio instead of prolonged stuff and get outdoors for some good, deep breathing every chance you get. You'll learn as you go, don't worry. You'll figure it out. Baby Herc Totally agree. I think in regards to the sex of an individual and sexuality (which I know isn't the subject but anyway) is more "fluid" than "males can only this" and "females can only that". Not everyone fits into a cookie cutter. We are all different, some of us very different. Under the right conditions I too gain muscle very easily, even though I'm technically an "ectomorph" and not supposed to. I see nothing wrong with a female gaining muscle easily (without unnatural supplements) but then if she doesn't want the extra muscle then I suppose that has to be worked around. The higher reps you do the less size you are going to gain and the more calories you are going to burn. In fact if you can get your calories right at maintenance and do cardio and/or high rep/circuit style weight training you will lose weight and have nice healthy muscle tone that is right for your genetics without gaining muscle size, or much of it. -
Wow what a fantastic story! I'm fairly new here myself so welcome to the forums from one n00b to another!
