I just discovered a great use for recycled plastic bread bags (and other strong plastic bags). Cut them crosswise in 1 1/2" widths so that you have loops, then cut the loops open to make strips. You can roll these into ropes and use them over and over again to tie up tomatoes, beans, peas, and other lightweight veggies, they wash off well at the end of the season. Don't use on woody plants, the plastic isn't rigid enough to do the job.

Awesome Idea!!!!

We built one of our beds, converted wooden storage shelf as a second, and a third came with the house.
Thanks for the storage tip. Those babies are fantastic on the grill. If I had my way, we'd grow more tomatoes and throw in some eggplant and zucchini. Our strawberry attempt failed, but we're going to try again. Eventually.
This year I'm going to grow Beefsteaks specifically for canning. I'm also dedicating 1 rain barrel to them alone.
I picked up this book at the Library: Making Your Small Farm Profitable.
I'm not planning on starting a farm but the information is unbelievable.
Check & see if your local library has a copy. It's worth a read to serious gardeners.

Give up all faux foods & food like substances. Eat lots of nuts, avocados, healthy fats, fresh veggies + fruit.

HAZARDOUS WEATHER OUTLOOK
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE BALTIMORE MD/WASHINGTON DC
The advisory means to expect gusts of 45 mph, although forecasters say to look for winds of up to 50 mph, which can make driving difficult.
HA! The wind nearly knocked me sidways today.

Hello. I am a vegetarian/almost vegan and have a friend of mines who was vegetarian for about a year but stopped after she complained of unwanted weight gain and bordem with vegetariasm. I would like for her to give vegetarianism and or veganism another try. Any suggestions? Thanks.
Is this the type of person who think's twinkies & vitamins is a vegan diet?
Stop eating fake food & eat real veggies: Raw, Roasted, Steamed, Grilled.
Start some seedlings, plant a fruit tree or support a farmer who already grows it all.
Bake your own bread, can some tomatoes, brew your own beer from hops you grew.

Thanks for the info on Sweet 100s.
-btw- if you have tons of cherry tomatoes in the summer, they are super easy to
grill/roast. Then when they've cold down, put them in freezer bags & store in the freezer.
There is nothing better then pulling out a bag of "YOUR" homegrown veggies in winter & heating
them up. I only have one bag left So this summer I plan to grow over 10 different tomato types.
Before you buy expensive RBs from HomeDepot check w/your local community. They might offer
recycle pickle barrels for a lot less money. They aren't as pretty as some of the store kind but they will save you $$$$

Less scientifically speaking plants don't scream in agony when they are killed .
^^^^
THAT! and the way animals are drugged, beaten & horrid living conditions.

Well, plants have existed long before animals. So plant's don't need animals to survive...there is a whole natural phenomenon that occurs that would allow vegetation to exist without animals. We need to eat plants.
I just don't want myself or my kids to be dogmatic about there choices in life, whether it be vegan, religion, or anything really. We should as people, be flexible, a flexitarian to what is the optimal for ourselves, and really no one else.
Actually you'd be suprised just how much trees depend on animals to spread their seeds.
It's a mutualistic symbiotic relationship that co-eveolved over time.

Steroids are vegan, they are synthetically produced. And in the near future, they (food scientist) will be able to clone organs, and so on for food consumption, and it will be meat. So being a meat eating vegan is very likely.
In all honesty, if you eat anything, something must die. 'Nothing begets nothing.' You eat a piece of fruit who knows how many organisms, bacteria, and actual micro organisms have been consumed or could have consumed the piece of fruit your eating.
Plants need the seeds/fruits to be eaten...
After the animal consumes the seed it's flies off (or walks) far from the parent plant. Eventually it excretes the seed allowing a new plant to grow.
I would never ever eat cloned meat, it sounds so nasty.

Cycled home in the cold_bleak_rain..... *&%@!!! I hate biking in the rain but it still beats the heck out've driving a car, traffic was backed up for miles & miles.
Small work out yesterday: Biceps, Traps, Glutes

wahminsc - I forgot to mention that I'm only watering my seedlings w/rain water. It's WAY better for the babies, they just can't handle the floride in Tap Water. Give it a try, you might be shocked at what a difference it makes.

Zone 8 here, about to plant my third garden. Sweet 100s, mint, and basil have been our best crops. This year I'm moving the herbs into pots I can bring inside in cooler months. Sweet 100s and Brandywine tomatoes have been started, and assorted bell peppers, jalapenos, Burpless Cucumbers, and blueberries are ready. We want to add a few trees, but haven't decided what other than lemons and lime. The eventual goal is to have an edible landscape.
Sweet 100s? I've never heard of that before. Any chance you have pics?
Have you ever heard of a Sweet Lime aka Limetta? http://www.hort.purdue.edu/newcrop/morton/sweet_lime.html
I bought some the other day & would love to try growing one but it's to cold here.
Love that you are going for fruit trees
My rule of thumb is: Plant what you will eat.

Read that & PMed to hubby I know people have problems w/Bittman but I love him.

Grilled or roasted veggies in EVOO & Kosher Salt.
I also make tons of soup. Pumpkin/Fig is my fave right now.
**NOTE: omit bacon/heavy cream & replace chicken stock w/veggie

I bought my measuring tape from a Fabric Store. Google Joe-anns, they always have it stock & cheap.

I know that that is a bad word on this site but here's my deal. I have been a vegetarian for 8 going on 9 years. I'm not quite vegan yet but would like to be one day. I am 36 years old and 5-10 weighing in around 155 pounds. I am interested in gaining muscle weight not fat. I try to maintain an overall healthy diet but I do like to treat myself from time to time and my wife also buys me food when sometimes too. Now the only fast food I would eat would be a veggie burger/patty from bk/subway etc, fries, cookies, etc. No mcdonalds at all. I want to know how often should I eat it as a treat? I heard that if I eat too much of it it will hinder my gaining goals. Any thoughts, opinions, positive feedback would be much appreciated. Thanks.
I used to think everything in moderation was ok but now I'm not so sure. My family & I
avoid Fast Food like the plague.
The TransFats they use in Fries should be out lawed.

Not being weak, bloated & live without chems.
While everyone on VB&F may move 100s of lbs in the gym - I need to move tons of compost, mulch, dirt & plants/trees over acres of land.
I do not want to die of osteoporosis like some of the best gardeners I know.
My ideal physique does not include eating animals.

This may sound strange but I highly reccomend eating raw spinach w/orange slices.
The trick is: Vit. C unlocks the iron in the spinach. I started eating handfulls
every morning 3yrs ago & now I sleep like a baby.
If I have a biz trip, I always eat spinach salads w/some sort of citrus or OJ for lunch.
Here's the catch - I know it works because if I don't have it for say 7 to 10 days, I can
no longer stay asleep (wake up @ 3am & stay awake)
I dare you to give it a try for a week.

Thank You! This along w/Pollan's books will help me tweak the diets of my loved ones.
