  1. Here ya go, as you can see, they claim not to know which shoes contain animal-based glue and which do not... Oh well, if you have to get new balances, at least these do not contain leather. I am thinking of just going to moo shoes in NYC.... I got a GREAT pair of veganwares dress shoes there- http://www.mooshoes.com/ that is their webstore -Joel Dear Joel, Thank you for contacting New Balance Consumer Support! All of the following models are made with synthetic materials. However, please note that we do use different types of glues depending on what is available. Some of our glues will contain animal products as many glues do. Although the shoe may be made of synthetic leather it does not mean it will be completely vegan. We do not mix real and synthetic leathers on any shoe. 2. That's not a bad idea... vegan electronics... maybe they could donate a percentage of the proceeds to farm sanctuary and peta?
  3. Thanks, I will check these out The earthscience one looks good... the alba has herbal essences/oils which I am not a fan of in facial cleanser... simpler is better for facial cleanser, I believe... Edit- I bought the EarthScience clarifying cleanser at whole foods today, i like it quite a bit, passes the shower test- Has a few herbal extracts but no oils, and does not seem to clog the pores... I also bought Earth and Sun hand soap and Dr Bronner's chaptick, both vegan... I love whole foods! If only they would stop selling meat and dairy/eggs, then they would be perfect....
  4. Thank you for your interest in Galderma Laboratories, L.P. In response to your e-mail dated November 27, 2007: “Can you tell me whether Cetaphil facial cleanser contains any animal byproducts and whether you test on animals? Kind regards, Galderma Laboratories markets dermatological products. Galderma Laboratories uses animals in evaluating potential new drug or pharmaceutical products only as required by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). We agree that the use of animals in pharmaceutical research is not ideal and we are just as anxious as you to find suitable alternatives. Our firm is always seeking new procedures and in-vitro models to replace the required animal testing that we currently undertake. Our products undergo the minimum animal testing required by the FDA to substantiate product safety and efficacy. I have enclosed a publication defining the FDA’s position on animal testing for your review. These tests are necessary to ensure that new drugs are not teratogenic (causing birth defects), toxic or carcinogenic. Currently, the only undisputed methods recognized by the scientific community require the use of animal models. Thank you for your inquiry concerning our products. Special Services Specialist Galderma Laboratories, L.P.
  5. Thanks for this link! I am going back to college full-time this January, was planning on joining/starting/kick-starting the local vegan network there, so this should help!
  6. Can anyone recommend a non-comodegenic vegan facial cleanser, ie no animal testing or byproducts? Preferably a simple product with few ingredients, not one with tons of herbs and oils... I have used Cetaphil by Galderma for a long time as per a dermatologist, but I have realized that they are probably not vegan (I am going to email them and I will post the results....)
  7. Well I decided to go, and made the vegan soup/stew I just posted in the recipe forum, and a whole foods vegan pumpkin pie. I hate being an accessory to animal slaughter and consumption when people have perfectly viable and delicious plant-based alternatives, but sometimes the best way to go is just to show up and eat wonderful vegan food. I got a lot of compliments on my soup...
  8. Um, that's good, I was looking for my posts and thought maybe they were deleted on purpose for some reason!! Good luck, let us know if you need donations or something-
  9. I thought the vegan pumpkin pie was great! My family liked it and did not think it tasted different or worse than a non-vegan pie. Personally I thought it was probably better than a non-vegan version- None of that dairy and eggs heaviness/saturated fat/cholesterol. And the pumpkin-ness was fantastic. Maybe I will try cooking my own sometime, but I did not want to try a first-time recipe to represent veganism at a holiday function
  10. OK, I am super-psyched to be volunteering for Farm Sanctuary in New York City. I think the first campaign will be anti- Foie Gras. Does anyone else here live in the NYC area or suburbs and want to volunteer? -Joel
  11. OK, this isn't exactly a recipe, but here are the steps: Go to Whole Foods Purchase Vegan Pumpkin Pie Purchase Vegan Cookies, like the Double Chocolate or Gingersnaps Eat them. I am not normally that big on sweets, but I love these! So delicious! Also like how whole foods pays for all of its electricity with renewables, and has so many organic and vegan products. I have been meaning to check out the vegan cookies and other recipes from the cookbook, Vegan with a Vengeance. They look pretty good.
  12. I have been experimenting with this for a few months, it is awesome, beats the heck out of any canned soup- (Measurements are approximate. Quality ingredients are key, I buy the grain and legumes in bulk from whole foods but any natural food store should do.) Make vegetable stock as follows: Filtered or Spring Water, 3 or 4 gallons Several tablespoons sea salt. Heat to boiling in a gigantic pot. Wash and/or peel and chop the following for the stock: Organic Celery, Several Sticks Organic Yellow Onion, 1/2 Organic Carrots, 2-3 Organic Fresh Rosemary, ~1 cup, or several stalks Other vegetable scraps such as lettuce, though avoid cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, brussel sprouts, and cabbage, because they cause a bitter, overpowering flavor. Add vegetables to the pot and simmer on low for ~40 minutes, ideally in one of those deep stock strainers that will allow you to remove the scraps from the stock without pouring it all through another strainer. Once stock is finished, remove the vegetable scraps and use for compost. Once stock is strained, wash and then add the following at noted times (timing is important): Organic Green Lentils, 2 cups Organic French Lentils, 1 cup (then set timer for 70 minutes and add the following at the times noted) Organic Barley, 1 cup (at 60 minutes left) Organic Long Grain Brown Rice, 1.5 cups (45 minutes left) Organic Russet or Red Potatoes, 2-8 depending on size, Chopped but unpeeled (35 minutes left) Organic Carrots, 3 or 4, Chopped, (30 minutes left) Organic Celery, 5 or 6 sticks, Chopped (25 minutes left) Organic Garlic, 3/4 or 1 clove, saute with extra virgin olive oil in a cast iron pan until just starting to brown, then add to soup (15 minutes left) Organic Yellow Onion, 1/2, chop and saute with extra virgin olive oil in cast iron pan, then add to soup (10 minutes left) Organic Cherry tomatoes, 2 cups, chop into halves or quarters and add to soup (5 minutes left) Final Ingredient, 2 teaspoons vitamin c powder (ascorbic acid), for tartness (available at a natural food store or organic co-op, or from vitamin store). Then serve. Once soup is finished, to cool it down in order to avoid overcooking, place the pot in sink, and plug sink, then fill the sink with cool water around the pot. Let sit until soup has cooled down, then place in tupperware and refrigerate. -Joel
  13. I take the lifetime acidophillus from whole foods, and nature's way reuteri. I would guess anything from jarrow is good too. I don't take probiotics all the time, but do ~30 day cycles every few months to reestablish the flora. I'm not sure there is any benefit from taking them constantly, as the intestinal/stomach flora reproduce naturally, but does anyone have any other opinions or evidence on this?
  14. I take jarrow l-glutamine, you can find it online for like 40 bucks for 1000 grams which would last 7 months at 5 mg a day. I think it does help with muscle growth, being the most abundant amino acid used in muscle production. Glutamine is also a precursor to the neurotransmitter GABA, and can thus stabilize mood and prevent cravings for nicotine, alcohol, stimulants, and overeating/food cravings. It is also an antioxidant. I'm not sure if there is much increased benefit to taking more than 5 or 10 mg per day though... More than 5 mg at a time can cause a headache...
  15. This is a little last minute, but can anyone recommend any nice, upscale/romantic type restaurants in Portland that would have something vegan on the menu? Doesn't have to be 100% vegan menu, just something- Thanks!

    Buddhism

I went to a service at Buddhist temple in Eugene a few weeks ago- I really liked the chanting and meditation, but then there was a 45 min sermon that killed the buzz- I was hoping for a real Lama or something, and the guy was cool, but a Westerner, and he didn't quite do it for me. I don't do well with dogma in general I suppose... But I love the Dalai Lama tapes I've downloaded, that guy is awesome, really touches your heart. Feels like you've known him your whole life- -Joel
  17. LOL, I am doing better- havent missed a workout yet- Well, just one, today, but I will make it up tomorrrow!
  18. Wow, that is absurd and illegal, or would be in the states and I assume so in the UK. My Aunt I am living with is an adjunct professer and PhD student studying education, particularly arts education. I can imagine how she would read your professors the riot act for such close-minded views on what constitutes art.
  19. Check this page at the UK Vegan Society- http://www.vegansociety.com/html/environment/ Click on the land, water, and energy links. They have mindblowing statistics, and with footnote/reference links that will direct you to the original research or articles. Good luck!!!
  20. Hey I know you What's up? Excellent intro- This board is pretty awesome, prob the best forum I have found for general vibe and coolness of the people. Tons of knowledge and experience as well. Take care, we will have to chill again- -Joel
  21. Ah you guys are so inspiring, but I fear my food routine is suffering a bit lately for personal reasons... Oh well- Anyway, I eat oatmeal every weekday morning, love it, not sure it would go well in cold smoothies tho? My fave are frozen berries, banana, soy milk, a couple ice cubes, and nutiva hemp powder-
  22. Hey, welcome from the US, this board is awesome- -Joel
  23. Hey what's up? I lived in Minneapolis/St Paul for a bit, moved back to NY around this time of year, couldnt take the cold, but I loved that city! -Joel
  24. Ah, I think I met Ravi, Brendan, and Robert, which was awesome, but I missed everyone else. We have to have another get together at some point, I am down to drive to Portland again- Vegans gotsta stick together! -Joel
