Hope your day two is going well! I tried a new smoothie today that is fabulous so I thought I would share it with you (online I mean, if only I could just pour a little in the cd-rom tray or something...): 1 cup water 2 tbls hemp seed 1/2 kent mango 1 banana 1/2 head of purple kale Maybe not the greenist green smoothie ever, but it is raw, fresh, packs some protein and good fats, and tastes like banana cream! I think maybe the mango is balancing out the kale or something... I look forward to your update!

What Melons aren't GMO?
oregonisaac replied to New World Vegan's topic in Health & Nutrition Programs
I thought seedless was created by cross breeding, not genetic modifications, which creates a sterile offspring like a mule. -
Might want to ask Jessifly about it, I know she went on the diet a short while and it was too high in seeds and nuts for her, which makes sense because most people do not workout at least 3-4 hours a day. No reason you can't follow it with just less seeds and nuts though!

Work, life, love, the usual. I think I got sick of blogging my food all the time, became a chore, and just quit going online for this stuff for a while. I am going to try to get back to the boards though, such a great community and resource! How are you? How have you been? Funny to use my blog as a chat session...

Wow, it has been 4 months since I went raw...and now I agree with this statement 100%! I would even go so far to say this is the ideal diet period, not just raw vegan, unless your body chemistry is messed up from eating other diets and then perhaps you will progress to this diet? Hard to say... I think at the time I thought something like... "Sure Courtney, how could you know what is best for me..." Just for fun, today I ate: 16 oz green smoothie (1 banana and a bunch of kale w/ a little water) 2 lara bars 1 lb green salad w/ extra veggies a sectioned banana wrapped in kale leaves 1 carton blueberries custom blossoming lotus smoothie (fresh apple juice, kale, blueberry, mango and pineapple) 16 oz carrot juice 2 oz wheat grass shot 2 apples 2 avocados 2 red peppers Feeling pretty damn amazing. I think one more green smoothie might go down before bedtime...but no more banana, I gotta watch that whole potassium sodium ratio thing...maybe I need some celery in this one to get a little sodium...

First, congratulations and choosing to go raw, I went 100% 3 months ago and it is fantastic! Like with any big change I have made in my life, there has been a lot of adjusting, learning, ups and downs, etc... through the whole process but I have also found a new level of vibrant health and happiness! Second, raw vegans are hot. We are happier, healthier, kinder, taste better, smell better, have better blood flow, are less moody, and many many other things when compared to your typical S.A.D. diet victim (or a typical junk food vegan for that matter). What I have found recently that is working fantastic for me are green smoothies, and not once in a while, but minimum 1 quart a day. If you do that, you can worry a lot less about balancing the right foods because a quart of green smoothie (made out of things like 1/2 head of kale, 2 bananas, and a handful of weeds like dandelions or plantains) packs an amazing amount of nutrients in a bio-available form. In addition, if I have a fairly safe place to pull dandelion greens fresh and blend them up in the first few hours I really get a boost. There are a lot of theories about why, but why does not really matter so much as the experience that it works! Your doing a great thing for yourself, do it right, learn all you can, talk to people, and believe. For 3 million years this is how humans ate, chimps who are 98.4% the same as us genetically still do, there have only been 7 generations of cooked food eaters. Welcome back to abundance!

My understanding is that drinking to much water when you are eating whole foods can dilute the digestive fluids and reduce the effectiveness of your digestion, but if you are eating processed foods, protein powders, etc... I do not thing that really applies since they are dehydrated so much. I try to drink water in between meals and just sip water during meals, unless I am eating something dehydrated, then I drink water if I don't soak and hydrate the food first.

Soy cheese products deceive consumers, violate vegans
oregonisaac replied to Neven's topic in Health & Nutrition Programs
I found this out the hard way, eating a nut loaf my mother prepared from soy cheese, and it made me very uncomfortable due to my eating a lot of it For me the best bet is to use natural alternatives for the creaminess I crave from cheese, like a soaked and blended nut or a bit of avocado. I believe in that enough now that I do not crave cheese, I crave fat, and eat good fat! -
Thanks for the encouragement on the book. The martial arts class I was taking was Budokan, which is kind of a mix of martial arts and yoga. Starts with meditation, yoga style movements and positions, then goes into kicking and punching routines, then something kind of like animal movement wind sprints, then closes with yoga movements and meditation. Pretty neat, but I miss my Doshinkan.

Thanks for the detailed start to your blog, I hope you plan to post your training ups and downs here, I look forward to seeing your success! Your on the right track for abs, just keep burning them as often as you can handle, they recover faster than anywhere on the body and so you can work them a lot of times. I am sure you will get to 4x25 or more quickly, if you are doing serious sit-ups for the first time 2x25 is great. I have found high weight low reps (like 5 sets 5 reps at 80-85% of max) or a pyramid (12x65%, 8x75%, 3x90%, 8x75%, 12x65%) to be the most effective when I was really focusing on mass gaining on other muscle groups like chest, back, legs, arms, etc... Everyone's body is different as I understand it and I think people naturally workout at different intensity levels, so mixing things up and trying lots of suggestions is key. I agree about the protein and supplements things to, you have to decide for yourself how you want to balance health vs. mass gain. There is no doubt you can gain more weight on high protein, high calorie, lots of supplements, etc...but at what cost? Best of luck!

Food allergy? Can't figure out what's wrong
oregonisaac replied to GinsuFrenzy's topic in Health & Nutrition Programs
Yeah, processed soy, that could be a big one. -

I really like this idea of you can handle it. I have done mono eating and while my digestion works pretty well there were some surprises For example: I have troubles with pears if they are not VERY ripe. -

That sounds very uncomfortable. might want to look at some of the posts about food combining. As I have improved my diet my stomach and intestines have become more sensitive to what I eat (or maybe I have become more sensitive to when something is wrong). Cool that you are concerned with your intestinal flora, I just started working on that myself. I am not going the yogurt route, but that is a tried and true method from past cultures (although they used unpasteurized milk, some from goats, which is a whole different thing from my understanding). Have you modified your diet recently? Changed supplements? Physical activity? Stress? Climate? Good luck! -
Welcome to the forum! This is a great place so share.

I decided to try and put away the car as much as possible for a while. I got an old road bike and today was my second day commuting on it. What a great way to get the day started (especially when it is so beautiful out) and I am luck to not have to be at work until 8:30AM, it is already warm and beautiful by then. So far I am sticking exactly to the Flora Balance regime. I have had some kind of weird light headed feelings off and on, almost a drunken feeling, and really minor headaches. Nothing to complain about, just something I can notice by really tuning in to where I am at. I am very excited about the potential to take another big step forward in my overall health. On a related note, a friend Tula gave me a copy of Conscious Eating by Gabriel Cousens to read. This may be about the most intimidatingly large book I have attempted to tackle since school (it is about the size of a large text book) but I am really excited to dive into it.

Sounds great, it was a pretty intense vibe at the party also. A lot of high energy people. I myself took a break from it in the basement at one point with Jessi to kind of center. The martial arts class at my gym was canceled for the summer! So I need to find something new, might just start doing yoga at my gym, but looking for options. Outdoor adventures? Interested in some mt. bike rides? I am going to try and join a group (not sure who they are, some guy at a stop light told me about them) who do a loop in forest park starting at the leif ericson trailhead every Wednesday at 5:30PM, so you would always be welcome to join. Beyond that I hope to do all kinds of random hikes, climbs and trips this summer (depending how my knee is holding up). Good to see you too.

How many 100% raw foodists among you guys?
oregonisaac replied to Wilderness Faerie's topic in Health & Nutrition Programs
100% raw only 2.5 months. I think the evolution thing is most has some truth to it. I have also heard that the average 45 year old male can not get a full erection, so in that sense we have evolved to use viagra. I actually have a few close friends that age, and at least half of them are on Cialis or whatever that new one that works for 48 hours is called. They say that is what happens right before heart attack time. Now if you mean evolution in the sense that the body is physically modified prior to development (genetically) I do not think that is true. I think most people certainly screw there bodies up as a child (or earlier) and onward eating all kinds of things the human body has to adapt to and therefore the body gets worse and digesting food, and certainly some cooked food is easier to digest in some senses. I have faith that the body can repair itself though, and there are plenty of stories out there to reinforce that faith if you choose to look for them. I also do not think you have to be 100% raw to be reasonably healthy, just like you do not need to be vegan to be healthy, but I am on a quest to thrive like a child. -
So I am not tracking my food very closely lately, and I have not been posting it here on the site. My food choices are still morphing, but being 100% raw is not really a challenge anymore, and I am not really motivated about blogging it here anymore. I guess I will add little notes about what is going on with me and my progress, and not mark every thing I eat anymore. So I have recently become concerned with my intestinal flora again. I have read little bits and pieces about it since the first time I tried to go raw in the Stephen Arlen Raw Power book and have also had some chance conversations about it. I ran into a raw guy at earth day who was very concerned about it for me after we talked about me being on anti-biotics A LOT as a kid. I have also decided that because I had no refined sugar until I was 5, then had a ton of it from 5-15, I may have created an unbalance there (oddly that was also the time I was sick the most and on the most anti-biotics). So I am trying out the Flora Balance program after reading up on pro-biotic types. This will also structure my eating a little bit because I can not eat when I first get up, nor can I eat right before I go to bed on this program. I am no day 3 right now, and my throat had been off and on sore for the last day, not bad, just a little dry feeling. I am going to try and up my water intake, maybe my body is flushing things and I need more water. Also had my first headache in weeks the day before. Looking forward to another transition towards better health!

I just watched "Children of Men"...
oregonisaac replied to loveliberate's topic in General Discussion
I saw it on a "date" too and I think it was your date that was weird. I really enjoyed the movie too, it was very intense, made me jump out of my seat and then cry 2 minutes later. -

So I have decided to start working in additional protein sources beyond just greens slowly in my raw diet, I feel my body needs it and training demands it, so this is a fun way to do it for me! In the food processor: 4-5 scoops hemp protein (about 140g total, 70g of that protein) 2 carrots (chopped) 5 brazil nuts (soaked, chopped) 2 tbls carob 1 tbls agave 2 tbls coconut oil 1 tbls hemp oil Process well then press into a cake shape on a plate, cool in the fridge to solidify. Because I have been eating only fruits and veggies for a while, this is a couple days worth for me. Ingredients are very approximated, I do not measure anything. This would most likely be better with hemp nuts to replace some or all of the protein and the hemp oil, but I don't have any, will try sometime.

Where is Vegetarianna when you need her? I will send her the link...

I normally make that smoothie for breakfast, and then I'll have another one if I work out that day, after my workout. I like that plan, I am working protein back into my diet right now (extra I mean beyond what I get from greens) and I am waffling between doing exactly what you are talking about, and doing the protein mid-day instead of early (because your "digestive fire" is really "roaring" by then or whatever...okay...I am making decisions off hearsay but that is nothing new for me...)
