  1. I managed to get excused from dissection in high school but in college I had to. I was caught off guard by it. I didn't have any forewarning that our class was going to be doing something like that otherwise I would've talked to the dean. I was lead to believe that the laws that protect public education (ie high school) did not apply to private universities. It was do it or fail the assignment and I was barely passing the class as it was. It was a very traumatizing experience. It didn't involve cutting into but rather skinning to study the muscular skeletal system. I remember my professor yelling at me and I was almost in tears. I wish I had a do-over and I could've walked out of the class and dropped the course.
  2. This is going to be our biggest vegetarian thanksgiving ever. Usually it is just the 3 of us plus maybe my parents so at most 5 people. This year my father-in-law is living with us (eating vegetarian at home I might add, I'm impressed) and he's invited my brother in law + family (who are definitely coming) and sister in law + family (not sure they will come). So we could have 10-14 people. Not sure how I'm going to feed so many people. I did buy 2 tofurkys. When my daughter was little a tofurky seemed to last forever, now they rarely last the end of the week. They must've gotten better over the years or our appetites have grown quite a bit!! But my guess is our non-veg guests will be eating mostly the side dishes. So I've been kind of looking around for vegan and vegetarian recipes for us to cook. The current menu: Tofurky roast (the kind you buy at the store) with onions, carrots, potatoes Stuffing Gravy Mashed Potatoes Baked Sweet Potatoes and Apples topped with nuts Pumpkin Pie Apple Pie
  3. I got bread, a couple different kinds of bagels and bananas on my counter. Junk food goes on top of the refrigerator.. everybody knows that
  4. Yeah I prefer the misspelled name like "chikin" or "bakon" or something to that affect. But we also eat turkey-styled deli slices. So I guess all that matters is that the animal isn't actually in the food!
  5. I just got back from a nice long vacation. We've been having a hard time getting back into the groove the past few days (with work, skating, even getting up and going to sleep) and school starts back next week. Anyway I missed last weeks show and was able to see it for free off the scifi website - I believe you can see all the episodes online.
  6. Tonya Kay got booted off tonight's show because one of her friends spilled about a time that she littered during the friends and family interviews. You can download the episodes and watch off of scifi.com I missed last week.
  7. What an awesome show! How cool is it that they are making Iron Enforcer a supervillian?? I was hoping he'd get axed. But that is a great twist. I'm still pulling for Lemuria. I think Tonya Kay fared better tonight. It really doesn't look like she is going to make it for the "long haul" though.
  8. I liked the wonder woman look alike the best. I can't believe how many people ran past that little girl. It was so obviously a plant! I liked how the man in the red suit handled the girl. In true 'superhero fashion' though I have to say it would've been a little scary if she hadn't been so obviously a plant. Anyway I loved the show. I don't think Tonya Kay was presented in a favorable light either. Edited to add: Wonderwoman look alike is Lemuria. And the man in red suit is Major Victory. These are my current favourites to win.
  9. I don't think I've met anybody other than michealhobson in person. We met last year at the Veggie Fest in Richmond. I'm not sure if he is still posting.
  10. I saw the commercials for the show for the first time today. I was really intrigued to see Tonya Kay is going to be on it. Hopefully it'll be a positive depiction of vegans in the media. I look forward to watching.

  15. Looking at the KFC Colonel Sanders logo this past weekend my daughter asked me if he was real in this world. I told her he was real but not in this world since he is dead now. She asked if he was in heaven. I'm such a great MOM -- I said of course not there's special place in hell for people like that. And if there isn't I hope he was reincarnated as a chicken. Someday DSS is going to come knocking at my door for all the stuff I tell her.....
  16. 90%, 18 mile error, 517 seconds. Overall I did pretty good. I missed five and I was close enough on some of them that they were touching in the red part where they were supposed to go. Its hard to tell before you get the other states to measure up against.
  17. Ah that makes perfect sense.. for some reason I thought they lived in West Virginia and you would be moving further away from them. That is great news though that you will be closer.
  18. why are you moving? job related or something else ...just curious. oh if anybody doesn't know I'm 28 and in NC.
  19. My mom and dad are 75 and 76 respectively. I don't know their weights my mom is 5'3" and I imagine around 120-125 pounds. My dad is about 6'5" and they both appear slender to me certainly not overweight. They've both had major health problems in the last ten years or so that have left them less active than they were when they were in their sixties. They do some gardening growing a lot of their own food - which can be quite a bit of exercise. They did a lot more of that kind of physical work when I was growing up and they were younger. I remember my mom doing modified pushups, situps, and exercise video type stuff when I was a kid. And we'd take long walks together in the evenings when the weather was nice. I think both of my parents gave me an appreciation of having and maintaining good physical strength.
  20. 1. Baptist 2. Anglican 3. There was a moment many years ago.. I guess I was in high school or college at the time where the Baptists were boycotting either Disneyland or Disney World (I can't remember which) because they were having a Gay Pride thing there and all of a sudden I felt embarrased to say 'Baptist' when someone asked what religion I was. I started calling myself Methodist and went to Methodist Churches for a while before I stopped going to Church pretty much altogether for another long while. Around the time I got pregnant with my daughter I went thru a phase in my life where I wanted to 'find' religion again. And I wanted to be religious for vegetarian reasons so I focused my efforts there. I thought that would help make being vegetarian easier (meaning just dealing with other people) if I could say it was part of my religion. That didn't work out so well. AND it left a bad a taste in my mouth for so-called religious vegetarians. I remember some men talking about going to an all-male boarding school where they had snuck out to go eat burgers at the local burger joint because they didn't want to eat the vegetarian school food. 4. In my heart I still believed in the Christian God /Jesus etc. I only wanted a BIG God and I finally found that. Thus that it is how I got where I am. No religion is perfect. But I have a home parish where I can worship, pray and grow in my own spirituality and in the end that is all that is important.
  21. well the other thought I had was maybe putting it in a wheat roll - that'd probably be tougher than pizza dough? I cut cut the roll in half melt the veganrella on each side of the bread and then top with sauce and veggies. I may have to just experiment.
  22. I've been thinking about the pizza idea as a 'lunchbox' item for my daughter. I'm not sure how it would taste after sitting in a lunchbox for 4 hours or so though. I could put spaghetti sauce down, top with veganrella and then veggies that my daugther likes and fold over as sort of a calzone. What do you think?
  23. I didn't research it or look into it really. I just thought that doesn't seem exactly like a 'kosher' thing to do. Tinkering with people - making babies that way - seems like that would start with animal research. Practice before they practice on people I guess though I don't know. It was just a thought I had.
