  1. Oh, I thought of another piece of information people can add... your real name... that is, if you don't mind sharing it and it's okay for people to address you by your real name. I'm Liz, but that's in my signature, so I guess most of you know that already! Everyone feel free to address me as Liz.
  2. Is it a teaching job, or something else?
  3. It is indeed! Most of my ages have been good, though. And I expect more good ages to come!
  4. Good luck!! I've got an interview as well, tomorrow. I really want (and need) this job.
  5. 26 pounds is 91,000 calories. That works out to a deficit of 13,000 calories per day to lose that amount in one week. Yeah, that shouldn't be possible. But it happens. And it's not just one week. On this show, people will lose like 100 pounds over the course of several weeks. So how does it happen? If we're talking about consistent large weight loss over many weeks, it can't be all water weight because there isn't that much water weight for us to lose! Is there? I know these folks exercise a whole lot and eat carefully... but that still can't be leading to 10,000+ calorie deficits per day, so what's going on?
  6. I was supposed to go on Sunday, but I didn't. Bad me. Tonight's workout: Squats: 115# x8 Calf Press: 250# x15 Incline Dumbell Press: 25# (ea.) x15 Rear Delt Row: 60# x12 One-Arm Dumbell Row: 40# x10 Wide-grip Pullup: -70# x6 The squat felt quite heavy tonight, and I did only 8. This was the first time I actually found myself unable to stand back up and had to set the bar on the spotting bars. Glad to know that actually works! Still found myself unable to move the 30# dumbbells on the incline bench! So I did more with the 25# ones. I also did some static holds with 50 and 60# dumbbells for my grip at the very end of my workout. Can't go too long. I'll have to work on this.
  7. I'm watching it, though I can't understand a word of it. So I don't think I'll be able to form any opinion!
  8. My parents are 62 and 68 years old. They don't really do any form of exercise, except that they walk more than average. I don't think they've ever had any kind of exercise routine. My dad used to like to play tennis now and then. But I wouldn't say they are unhealthy. They are both good weights and if you saw my dad you would think he looks quite fit, especially given his age. He's lucky though in that he has always maintained a good weight and had decent muscle tone without having to do much of anything. My mother is a naturally rather skinny person. I don't know how they feel about my exercising, but I'm sure they don't really know what I do. They know that I go to the gym and the know I like to ride my bikes, but that's about as specific their knowledge is.
  9. I started this particular routine just last month, but I've been working out in some form since June of this year. Also, I do a single set of each exercise, which means I can do heavier weights than I would if were aiming to be able to do 3x12 or something like that. A couple of weeks ago I went shopping and had lots of groceries. I was on my own so I loaded myself up with all the bags and headed to my car. As I got there and put my stuff down, a guy going by said "you are very strong--you must work out a lot" and I responded "I do!". I didn't know what else to say! It's funnier if you can hear how I said it. I really need to add deadlift! But I had such forms problems last time I did them that I don't want to start again until I can get someone to go over how to do them with me in person. And I don't know how to make that happen. I also need to work on my grip, which is pretty sad. I'm finding that my grip is already starting to be limiting, like on the lat pulldowns. Maybe I will do some static holds of some heavy dumbbells.
  10. I forgot to post last Thursday's workout. Squat: 110# x12 Calf Press: 230# x 12 BB Bench Press: 75# x6 Barbell Shoulder Press: 50# x9 Cable Row: 95# x12 Lat Pulldown 90# x11
  11. Hey Richard, Here are two pictures to start for me: 2003, I think. http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c47/formicalinoleum/Liz3b.jpg 2005. http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c47/formicalinoleum/NoseRing2.jpg I'll send you more recent pictures once I have some.
  12. Thanks! I've been growing it for about 4.5 years now.
  13. I love this one! Is it you and your mum? It looks so incredibly 70s!
  14. I hate stupid things. Like SUVs. And littering. And people who drive recklessly. When I say those things are stupid I mean that there are much worse things to get upset about. But for some reason, relatively little things like that can make me mad. I guess the bigger stuff makes me sad, and it's the smaller stuff that makes me angry.
  15. Yeah, I find myself coming back here all the time to see if anyone has posted... but I figured that meant that I have a problem and am addicted to this board! I'd love it if it were busier, but on the other hand that means I would spend even more time here!
  16. I play the bass, and we do nearly all covers, but we are going to be adding originals. Two of the band members (the guy in the northern rock shirt and the other woman) are also solo artists and songwriters. We cover a large range of rock songs and some Irishy/Celtic rock stuff (because we play primarily in an Irish bar). We cover songs by The Smiths, INXS, Cyndi Lauper, The White Stripes, Talking Heads, U2, The Waterboys, Sheryl Crow, The Cure, among a bunch of others. We even just added "Free Love on the Free Love Freeway", the song that David Brent plays in an ep of The Office!
  17. Okay, random pictures of me... together this should give some idea of what I look like. Me sitting on a couch. This was a few years ago. I'm not sure how long ago, but I can tell it's a least a couple of years because my hair is kind of short. http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c47/formicalinoleum/Liz3b.jpg In comparison, this is how long my hair was this past May. (My hair is wet because I had just been swimming in the ocean. And yeah, I'm dancing.) http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c47/formicalinoleum/LizDance4.jpg Here's me with my bandmates. http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c47/formicalinoleum/SeamusSmilessm.jpg And here's a close up of me with my septum ring in (in all the other pictures I am wearing my retainer). I don't think this actually looks much like the way I picture myself. http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c47/formicalinoleum/NoseRing1.jpg That's it. I don't have tons of pictures of myself. One day I'm gonna take some full-body shots so I can track my progress and maybe I'll post one or two of those if they come out okay.
  18. I'm a weak agnostic. I believe the answers can be found through theoretical astrophysics (by discovering more about the origin of the universe) and microbiology (by discovering more about the origin of life). I guess my thinking is that gods are nearly all conceived of as being smarter and more powerful than humans, so if they didn't want to be detected by us, they'd be able to avoid it. I think that we can probably rule out certain specifically defined gods based on the characteristics they are supposed to have and the things they are supposed to have done, but can't rule out all the entire class of gods. Some theists actually use this kind of argument, saying that the fact that science doesn't match with literal interpretation of the bible doesn't mean the biblical god does not exist, because god could have made the scientific evidence look that way. Some see this as a potential test of faith to see if some folks will be lured away from Him by this science. As long as this argument can be made, then scientific evidence can't prove there is no god.
  19. Interesting. I guess I am a strong agnostic. I am also an atheist. But the definition of agnostic atheist doesn't really fit, probably largely because it doesn't include the strong agnostic definition in it. I see a strong distinction between knowledge and belief. That's how I can believe that humans cannot know whether or not there are any gods, yet hold a strong belief that there are none. Oh, I also believe that everyone is either a theist or an atheist and that there is no inbetween position. That is because the definition of atheist is really simply "not theist." If you have one word that means "X" and one word that means "not X" then the two terms are exhaustive, because if one is not "X" then one is by definition "not X" and vice versa; one cannot be not "X" and not "not X" simultaneously. Of course, this all hinges on acceptance of the definition of atheist being "not theist" which is not universally accepted. But that's the way I use it.
  20. Weights I do 3 days a week--Tues, Thurs, and Sun. I am supposed to do bike riding--anywhere from half an hour to two and half hours, on the trainer or on the road--every day, but I haven't gotten into that groove yet. Right now I am about 3 times a week, but hoping to hit all 7 very soon.
  21. Sounds like you may be an apathetic agnostic. "We don't know and we don't care."
  22. 1. Catholicism. My mom's family is Irish Catholic. My dad's side is not Catholic, but he went to church with us and eventually converted when I was a teen. My brothers and I went to Catholic school K through 12, went to church every Sunday and holy day, were in the CYO (Catholic Youth Organization) for a few years, were confirmed, and so on. My first, middle, and confirmation names are Elizabeth Mary Bernadette. 2. I am an atheist and an agnostic and a humanist. I'm also quite interested in Buddhism. 3. I stopped believing in god when I was in my teens. I think some of my (bad) religion classes contributed, because they made me question what I was being taught in those classes, which led me to question all of it. 4. That would be a long answer. To sum it up, I think religion has its good and bad points. Some good points are that it seems to make some people happy and give them some hope and joy in their lives. Some people claim that it's only religion that keeps them in line, and though I'm not so sure I believe them, it's a good thing if it is true. Bad things are that fundamentalism in religion can discourage people from thinking about moral issues for themselves and can lead them to try to control other people's lives.
  23. The healthy range for my height (5'5") is somewhere around 112-150, if you buy that BMI stuff. I'd guess that most women who are within that range (and apparently, most women in the US are overweight and would be above that range) are at the higher end of it. For myself personally, I do think 150 is a little heavy, and I'd like to get in the 135-140 range. I can't imagine getting below 135 with my body type. I've been 140 for most of my adult life, so that's probably the most reasonable target for me. Of course, since I started working out I have been trying to rely not so much on scales and more on how I look and feel. I do understand about 150 being pretty big for a bodybuilder, though. A bodybuilder would have very little fat, so being 150 pounds would mean having a lot of muscle mass for a natural female. (Though I guess it depends on what her height is.)
