  1. 9/19/15

Turned 40 today. Was a chill uneventful day with a little house cleaning for some folks coming over later. I'm about to go out to eat with the family. We're going out for pho. Delicious.

Am 3 rice cracker with pb&j

Smoothie: 1 cup oats, 2 cups frozen fruits, 2 cups kale, 1/4 block tofu, 3 tbsp peanut butter, tbsp flax, OJ, soy milk.

Lunch. 2 Sandwiches with hummus, broccoli sprouts, avocadI

Training: I was going to take the day off but I like to take advantage when I know there is going to be excess calories.

    15 min jump rope

    DL 225 x 5, 315 x 5,6,7

    Deadlift felt good

    Dinner: pho noodles, lychee boba.

    Time for cake and pie

    Happy Birthday dude!

  2. Watch this. I stand corrected. This guy is good

Good vid. & funny to boot. Hams & glutes. I also checked out his channel & more of his vids. A helpful one on chest press.

This thread's got me inspired to get back into more compound exercises, the last few years I've just got more and more into isolated exercises.... so next time I'm at the gym I'll be the one doing the deadlifts.

    Keep liftin!

  3. Respect. Yeah, I've personally not used a belt for years. But if I look back I do think if anything using one in the early days did help me develop good form. But I may be wrong, and I'm sure that wouldn't necessarily be the case for everyone anyway... & those articles you posted links to have strong arguments against their use at all. In my current gym I think I've only seen 2 or 3 guys using belts. In Sean Connery style I guess I'll never say never... But I certainly think my core strength these days is a lot better then it was, so I don't feel I need one, but for lower back injuries....? Maybe there's still a place for belts in some circumstances? I'm guessing you'd say that place would be the bin...? I agree that finding out robust info about things is crucial: Informed decision making being the mac daddy and such forth. Wasn't it Stewart Lee who recalled a taxi driver's frustration.... "well you can prove anything with 'facts'..."...

As for the original post, if anything I'd say try & get more of a 'hinge' mechanism going on... As explained nicely in this video on youtube: It was the first hit for deadlift form:

In your vids it looks to me like your lower back's 'pulling' a bit.

Just a thought, stick at it!

  4. Weight belts are not for protecting backs, lol, they are used to be able to push abs against to create higher inter thoracic pressure. If you use a belt hoping its presence will somehow protect you from injury your in for trouble.

They're for both, in my opinion. And for other reasons as well. One of the benefits they CAN have is for protecting backs. That's why I suggested he discuss it with his physio, as where his back injury is will be one of the key bits of info as to whether or not a belt will help in his recovery. I used to use a weider belt in lifting, got my first one about 30 years ago. It was helpful at times. I used one on and off for a few years going to different gyms. I've not used a belt for over 20 years now, and that's even after some serious back problems after a double decker bus 'wrote off' a car I was driving. I still don't use a belt now, but think this chap who posted for advice may benefit from trying one, with advice from his physio. Anyway, just trying to give some hopefully helpful advice. I don't pretend to 'know it all'...

  5. Links need to be cut & pasted into address bar. Form looks fine in my opinion, but I'm no expert. Looks like you're putting the effort in.

One thing I'd say, especially considering your recent back problems: Why not try a weightlifting belt for more protection? Not necessarily as a permanent solution, but I think it would be sensible during your recovery period. Anyway, at least discuss it with your physio.

  6. Hi, I think the forum is great. Great to have something separate to Skynet, I mean Facebook.

There do seem to be a lot of individual 'introductions' threads, that kind of go nowhere though. My recent one included. No return posts = not a great feeling of welcome. How about combining ALL the introductions threads into one BIG introductions thread. That way could generate more discussion amongst new AND more established members, and people could even use it as a 'check in' thread if they've been away from the forum for a while.

    Just an idea...

  7. Cardio today on rowing machine then cross trainer as warm up, then:

Chest press inclines 4 sets, then chest press 4 sets,

Then triceps extensions 4 sets, then overheads 4 sets, then 3 sets triceps dips, then 1 set chest crossovers & I was done.

    I wanted out.

I demolished a bag of spinach. Cos I'm strongs to da finnach.

& tonight celebrated my 9th wedding anniversary for a meal in a nearby restaurant with my wife & daughter. Not a vegan restaurant, but the staff were really great & I had a very garlicky bruschetta then a spicy tomato egg free pasta, then a black coffee while they had dessert. No probs.

Much preferring vegan restaurants though, for the choice & ethics. Last weekend i was in Edinburgh on a course & ate at a really awesome vegan restaurant where I had vegan haggis. Delish

  8. Hi, I'm a 46 year old from the North of England who's been infrequent on/off weight training for years with no real gains to speak of. I was vegetarian for years but kept lapsing back to fish eating and/or meat eating..... But more recently committed to a total vegan diet. It's day 75 today for me of vegan diet & that bit's going well. My wife's been awesomely supportive, and I know I'd really struggle to get the right food in my body without her help.

Not been getting to the gym enough recently, but I made it back today!

Did back, lats, & triceps, with some cardio to finish.

Just got home & demolished a protein smoothie: Coconut milk, hemp protein, mango, raspberries, banana. Delicious...

(above was cut & pasted from intro board)

I thought the blog/journal section might be a better place here to post after I make it to the gym.

    Need to build some momentum...

  10. I've watched a few of his youtube videos, and I think he does make some really good points about the over reliance on meat and dairy in bodybuilding culture for sure. Trouble is, there's so much put me off in his presentations that I just don't go to his channel anymore. I'd much rather watch a peaceful, supportive channel than his angry rants. It's a shame. I really hope he gets some help (support from friends, therapy, self help, whatever) and makes some sincere apologies to any people he's hurt needlessly. Focussing on the positives of veganism would make his channel a whole lot better in my opinion

  11. Yeah it does seems okay, and easy in the sense that you just use the same amount as you would normally use for sugar.

Personally I prefer stevia as the one I use is organic ~ I had trouble finding an organic xylitol but I'm sure they're out somewhere ?!

    Good point.

The make I've got at the minute says 'made from natural sustainable plant sources'.

I'll have a look for an organic version next time I'm in the health food shop.

    Cheers

  12. Hi. I only recently found out about xylitol's supposed dental health benefits. I stopped off at the health food shop yesterday & picked up some xylitol gum, mints & granules to try after meals. So far results are positive. I read, though, that the insulin response caused in non-primate animals can be so severe as to lead to death if not treated. It sounds as though dogs in particular have sadly been the victims here It's reported as being safe for humans though. Low gi index, slow release. Can have laxative effect if eat too much.

So far I've found: Teeth feel squeaky clean after use, & there's no strange after taste. Too good to be true?

    Anyone tried this?
