  1. Today, nutritionnist say that ginger, dark chocolate, red wine, garlic, green tea and all those stuff are good for health, prevents cancer, give longevity, energy, etc...... like if they promote products to stimulate economy... while at the same time they confess those things may have some bad sides also. It's often those same people that say cow milk, dairy products and meat are essential for human's health. But other people, way before them, always said those things (garlic, ginger, etc) are really bad for health. A "real food don't contain any harmful elements in it". Tobacco contains proteins, carbs, vitamins, minerals, water, it could be considered as a food that you can eat, but it's not, because it's also one of the most virulent poison found in nature. Anyone noticed what those things have all in common ? They are either irritants (ginger, garlic, vinegar, hot chili peppers, etc) or nervous stimulants (cocoa, cafeine/theine, alcool). I say if something like ginger is painful for the throat and digestive tube, imagine what damage it can do to your system, irritating all cells of organs that it touches. Usually, but it's my opinion, when something is ing just by smelling it or put in mouth, it's a message from nature: "don't eat me!", when insects find those food they fly away. That's often the only defense for a plant : being poisonous.
  2. with at least 30 grams of complete protein per day you don't lose lean mass, that's a minimum standard for relatively sedentary people, with a normal amount of calories per day that don't make lose or gain weight. You should eat more proteins (let's say 1g-2g/kg bw) if : you train a lot, especially with weights you reduce a lot your total calories intake you have a huge lean mass
  3. There's so many movies I love, but if it's "Inspirational Movies" for motivating me in training are Bruce Lee films (maybe also some sylvester stallone) and those that had huge impact on my life in general, I would say most of James Dean movies, like Rebel without a Cause . I liked Catch me if you can it shows everything is possible, Cronenberg's Crash for all the themes I like. Of course some movies that I've been watching millions of time when I was young, like raiders of the lost ark and some swartzenegger movies ( total recall, predator, terminator...) I liked the docu-fiction Fast Food Nation about shit in the meat, and the documentary about meat industry Our Daily Bread. Classics I love are Vertigo and 2001 a space odyssey, Koyaanisqatsi for the beautiful cinematography...
  4. If you're very very lean like you say, you should already see your abs, everybody have abs even without training them, except anorexic people that have eaten their own muscles. But if you wanna lose your abdominals, the only way I can think of losing fat at the same time than gaining muscle is a sort of trick : you eat less calories than what you burn on most days of the week, but on days that you lift really heavyweights, eat more calories than what you burn, maybe the day after also. That way at the end of each week you've been burning fat most of the time, but you build muscles on crucial moments.
  5. I know, by the new standards of a sick society! Like when I eat my nuts or fruits at the job, people say it's not normal, I should eat hot-dogs like them... I saw someone else out there eat a fruit, it's really rare I saw it only twice. It was an apple but eaten while drinking coca-cola, and the other time the person put her apple in the microwave before eating it! To get back to our farts, I know it's not only what you eat, each person has it's own chemistry. For instance I used to live in a place, my neighbor always had gas, but it was a serious case, it was really really loud and long sounds. I guess even if he wouldn't eat he would still be farting all day. I suppose there exist some kind of surgery for this. It was like having a jazz player for neighbor, with his trumpet or saxophone, or the noise elephants make to cry or call.
  6. To add a spiritual dimension to this discussion about farts, there's a more oriental concept, the 3 gunas : Sattva, Rajas and Tamas, concerning which food is good for some and bad for others. Sometimes a food can be sattvic, rajasic or tamasic. It's a spiritual view about the food, because it is true that nutrients from food goes into our cells, including the brain, and it actually become our body and mind. Sometimes a food can even be good for someone at a certain time of the day, and bad for him if eaten at another moment of the day, causing emotional and physical stress or discomfort. It's all about listening to what your body needs in the present moment, depending in which mood you are now... http://www.vegetarian-restaurants.net/Ayurvedia/Sattva-Raja-Tamas-Ayurveda.htm
  7. I was so surprised, and, I must say, a little bit worried, when I've read all those posts about people having so much gas! I rarely fart and when I do nobody notices it, I barely notice it myself! I'm not judging you, I can have myself sometimes this problem when I start eating a lot and all day, but I try reducing this to a few months per year. I know you may find this subject funny, but it's serious at the same time and I think you should accord more importance to it. Every stinky fart means there's something wrong going on, it's toxic gas that want to come out, meaning there's some poisoning inside too, resulting from a bad chemistry in the stomach. There's many reasons possible, one of them is the way you combine foods, like Zack said for instance : sugars with beans. Fruits should be eaten on empty stomach, for breakfast, or 30 minutes before a meal, or at least eat before the meal, not at the end (do the samething with all sugars and desserts). The reason is that fruits only stay about 20 minutes in the stomach than go to the bowels (especially melons who stay less than 2 minutes), except if there's other food already in the stomach ! In this case, fruits are gonna stay for hours in the stomach, at almost 100 Fahrenheits. There's other food combining rules and you may already heard about them sometimes, for more details just google search or browse at http://www.internethealthlibrary.com/DietandLifestyle/Food_combining.htm. I myself only follow some of these rules and most of times I digest quite easily much about anything and bad combined foods. But that don't mean my digestive organs are immunized against cancers or suddenly be out of order in many years. Breathe by the nose, mouth is to eat and talk. Do a walk outside after eating, it helps to digest. Someone said that the digestion starts in the mouth, especially with carbs like bread, quinoa, rice, etc... which most people doubted but I think it is true. To digest we need enzymes and the only enzyme present in the saliva is the amylase, the enzyme that transform complex carbs into simple carbs. Do a test with some bread in your mouth, insalivate, you'll notice it literally melts in the mouth, tasting more and more like sugar. In the saliva there's also some lipase for the fats. Also, there's some food (even healthy food like fruits and vegetables) that are simply not good for someone while it is good for someone else. This is due mostly depending how much acidity you're able to pour out in your stomach. Some don't have enough acidity, other have too much. Also, some food should be avoided for certain people regarding on their blood type but that's a controversial theory and I don't believe in it as much as I did before. I just think the digestion health is important, because a difficult digestion during most time of the year often result in cancers, so many people developp colon cancer, prostate cancer, everything from mouth cancer to anus cancer, the whole digestive tube and all organs involved. When organs are tired of so much work over the years. From there the importance of the night-fast, because during sleep, the digestive system also need some rest, as much as the rest of the body. I understand sometimes we need to eat huge quantities of food when we do bodybuilding, but most of times at night the body only ask for some water.
  8. ahah funny I read this thing about building the jaw muscles, I always thought it was possible in a way, last week I wrote in my training log that "I trained my lower body and jaw muscles all day by walking while chewing gum", I was adding more and more gum, it was cold that day and the gum was really hard to chew, it was a good work out, at the end of the day it was like LiveSimply said in his post. I always had a well defined face and jaw, I think it's important because it gives you a neck, so many people don't have any neck because there's no definition between the body and the head !
  9. I've read some articles on a French site, tried to translate... it says maple syrup may not always be vegan, when some companies use pork fat as an agent in the last stages of processing, eventhough now most of industries use veg. oil or synthesis agents. Also, better stay away from regular commercial raffined cane sugar, to make it white, some companies may use black (burnt) cow bones as a filter. So better use natural brown cane sugar, or Turbinado sugar, or beets sugar, which don't need this kind of process. To be absolutly sure, better use agave nectar. But anyway, when you buy your food in trustful health store with competent sellers, you shouldn't have any problem. facts : Americans are 5% of world population but represent 33% consumers of all the sugar in the world. The common American eat 68 kg of sugar per year, that's like 1 soupspoon per hour, 24h/24 everyday of the year. The use of sugar have caused a 36% increase of the U.S health costs.
  10. The possibilities are almost infinite, but I like this one, it leave about 72 hours for recovery (program from a pro bodybuilder in a magazine: Day 1 - pecs, arms, abs Day 2 - back, shoulders, abs Day 3 - quads, ischio, calfs, abs Day 4 - pecs, arms, abs Day 5 - back, shoulders, abs Day 6 - quads, ischio, calfs, abs Day 7 - rest If you don't have time, you can do only 3 days for abs ( like day 2, 4 and 6) other programs supposed to facilitate muscular developement, but using a different method, and shorter rest period, about 48 hours, but if you want 1 hour session or less, you have to chose only the most efficient exercices for you. But what's good is that's its only 3 days/week! This technique should stimulate more muscular growth and progress than only training at 100% max strenght. 1- overall - maximal strenght (the heavier you can, always to failure) 2- rest 3- overall - 3/4 of your max strenght, longer series 4- rest 5- overall - maximal strenght (the heavier you can, always to failure) 6- rest 7- rest Or: 1-upperbody- max 2- lowerbody - max 3- upperbody - 3/4 max 4- lowerbody - 3/4 max 5- upperbody - max 6- lowerbody - max 7- rest
  11. why not always using fruits as sweeteners ? make a fruit coulis to pour on all cakes and pastries or put whole fruits on top, put fruits in the blender as you do your shakes. But for more powerful sweeteners, stevia may be interresting especially because there's no calories, I got used to the taste but at first found it strange. I rarely eat pastries and cooked or raw sweet stuff, but if I want some vegan pancakes later, I guess I'm gonna put lots of maple syrup and berries on them! also, maple syrup added with lots of natural sugar make it a very thick syrup if you want something even more decadent! I thought blackstrap molasse was a good food with lots of iron, until I've read that... http://www.rawfoodexplained.com/junk-foods-molasses/
  12. this is just another low-carb diet
  13. seems good in general, especially if Lean & Green says it's a good program; he knows better than me. But if I can give my opinion (maybe Lean & Green or someone else can tell if I'm right or wrong), I'd say that to train a muscle group only one day per week leave a too long resting time (except if you feel soreness for a week). It takes between 48 to 72 hours for complete recovery, depending for each person and depending how intense was the training session. After that time, the muscles are at like 110% or more of potential capacity and it last for a day or two. Longer, the muscles potential goes back to 100%. You lose some of the benefits. To make it simpler, as soon as you don't feel any soreness, that's the time to work that muscle again, for maximum progress. But I would say that especially for the slow-contraction muscles or endurance muscles groups if you want. Like abs, lower-back and calfs. Bruce Lee had amazing abs and he was working them every single day. But maybe when you start in bodybuilding, muscles need longer periods of rest! all this is a complex science...
  14. To lose weight you don't have to cut on fruits. The only thing really important is to consume less calories than what you burn. to lose one pound you must burn 3 500 calories more than you consume (like 500 calories per day for one week). Reducing food calories by 300 and burning 200 more during activity. 1 pound of butter is just like 1 pound of bodyfat, you eat it or you burn it, it always equals 3 500 calories. If you want to lose weight, you don't need to eat right after work out, the body continues to burn lots of calories (from the glycogen reserve inside muscles and from the fat, more than from lean mass), so you can wait at least 30 minutes. I'm not an expert but I can assure you that you're eating too much proteins. Research have showed that athletes eating 30 grams per day performed 3 times longer on cycle than those eating 60 grams or more per day, that's because protein desintegration produces lots of toxic waste, some are rejected by the body but there's still some in the muscle fibers, causing lactic fatigue. If you're lifting weights, you can eat 60 grams because you break more muscles than for endurance. Populations who live the longer only eat about 30 grams/day. Too much will accelerate the ageing of a person, and all his cells. I suggest you to read the "how much proteins do we need" at this address : http://www.rawfoodexplained.com/proteins/how-much-protein-do-we-need.html
  15. 15 march I was feeling so weak this morning, thought maybe a little change from the protein shakes would help, after a week at almost zero carbs per day. Ate a big bowl of oatmeal with raisins. Was so good. I saw the sugar circulate in all veins. But I was even more tired! Later I ate some greens with salt and mustard. Like usually, all I needed was potassium and salt. I felt great! trained for 30 minutes and than drinked a soy shake. total: less than 700 calories, about 70 grams or proteins losing some weight ! starting to see my upper abs, left bicep vein always visible. note: I'll be writing here only once a week later on, with short description of the food and caloric amount for each day, takes too much time writing everyday.
  16. 15 march morning removing all the snow in front of my house. quite a work out when feeling tired, and considering all the snow there is here ! 30 minutes evening circuit training, 30 minutes 2 sets 25 sit-ups on gym ball 2 sets 25 leg raise 2 sets 25 frog kicks 1 minute Powerball 2 sets 25 lateral raise with band 2 sets 60 bicep curls for each arm with band 1 minute speed rope 50 lat. raise for centre back, with band 600 calf raise (300 each calf using angle variations) total: 1 hour ----------------------------- total for the week (cardio and muscular) : 6 hours + a few hours of walk... Disappointing ! I'll double that in the next weeks note:for next weeks I won't be updating each day but rather make a resume for the whole week each sunday.
  17. GI has nothing to do with simple or complex sugars. Usually, industrial sugars are high and as you come closer to nature, it's low glicemic. "The “glycemic index (GI) is a numerical system of measuring the rate of blood glucose generation by a particular food item as compared to a reference item, such as glucose = 100. Foods with higher glycemic index numbers create greater blood sugar swings. " (from the link below) Over 50 is high GI, 50 and under is low GI. Oven baked potatoes or fried: 95 Boiled or steamed potatoes: 70 Maltose (as in beer) is the highest of all (110), even more than glucose. Heat can transform a low GI into a high GI, like for potatoes (too bad we can't eat them raw) and carrots. Always eat your carrots raw. White bread is 95, whole grain bread is 50... Soy and other beans, nuts, fruits are between 10-30, they should never be avoided. Bananas and dried fruits are 60 though. for more info : http://www.randypollak.com/html/giindex.html
  18. very nice biceps and shoulders, and all the other parts I cannot say in public!
  19. I don't know, never been there, but that's what I've read. The book said many people were dying because of infected prion proteins from those squirrels, so maybe they finally decided to stop eating that. Maybe they stopped eating that in the 70's or so, I'll try to borrow that book again to check. This book is serious and very well documented, not just to cause sensation. The author shows sources for everything she writes for proofs.. Nothing so exceptionnal to eat squirrel brains, if we think that today in America's fancy restaurants they serve animal brains, bigger animals than squirrels though. If it's uncommon, than it's classy or it appeals some to try it.
  20. yeah I guess that blood type diet is crap. That doctor doesn't say if he's been watching on microscope how blood cells reacts with each food. I'm gonna continue with that, but if I want a slice of tomato in a sandwich or if I want a banana, I'm not gonna stop myself like I was doing before ! Hey Lean & Green, continue ! I've read the posts, you're training really hard. I'm gonna follow every week. You must be in top shape, if not you're on the right way to be soon !
  21. That's how I was most of the time I was training for about two years. I guess it gave me just half the results I would have had if I had made (is it the correct way to say this ? ahah) my mind since the beginning ! If you're so uncomfortable having a few extra pounds, you can lose some weight for some weeks and than train as hard as you can. But than as you bulk up maybe you're gonna store some fat again. So it's not that important. I haven't follow your training log yet, but I'm pretty sure you're doing what you want, following what seems right for you. Anyway you know a lot more about gaining and losing mass than I know, and you're the one who knows what's best for you ! I'm sure you're gonna succeed. You've been there before, you know what you have to do. You looked awesome during that competition. You forgot to say you won the 1st place! Nice hair style also! I wish you all the good luck and can't wait to see some progress pics.
  22. 14 march 4p.m: circuit training 33/137/174 2 sets for each exercice -1 minute speed rope -1 minute nunchaku practicing -25 sit-ups on gym ball -25 leg-raise -25 frog-kicks -50 alternate biceps curls w/ band -50 seated row w/ resistance tubing -25 lateral arm raise w/ resistance tubing -35 push-ups 9p.m: circuit training 20/142/176 2x 40 declined push-ups 2x 25 sit-ups on gym ball 200 alternate frontal raise w/ 5lb dumbells 25 lateral leg raise, for each leg 2x 25 inclined push-ups 2x 20 sit-ups 50 bodyweight squats 30 right tricep extensions w/ band 25 left tricep extensions w/ band total time : 53 minutes
  23. March 14 10 am: hemp shake, 220 cals 12:30pm: high protein vinaigrette with broccoli and celery. 180 4:30pm: soy shake with soymilk, raspberry extract and stevia, was so good!! 190 cal 10pm: same soy shake than before. 190 total: less than 800 calories, around 90 grams of proteins My high-protein vinaigrette recipe I tried this the other day, putting stuff that I found in my fridge, it’s so good! I adjust quantities until desired consistency 1-2 tablespoons of Soymilk powder 1-2 tablespoons of soy protein isolate a pinch of yellow mustard powder, Herbamare (aromatic seasalt), garlic, italian fine herbs (basilic, oregano, thym…), or whatever you have… a few drops of Tamari sauce 1 tablespoon of Dijon mustard In 1-2 tablespoon of water of soy beverage, mix the mustard powder, soymilk powder and soy isolate. Add rest of ingredients and mix with a spoon. I think I'm gonna make some changes because often I feel weak. Either I have to make an effort to drink 6 shakes per day, or either I begin to eat some meals like adding fruits, oatmeal, etc...
  24. maybe it's simili-leather ! I want a house like that!
  25. Thanx, it was 5th of march, 27 y.o, getting old ! My mother made a carrot cake without eggs and with canola oil, spelt flour. I don't think there's any vegan café around here, I should open one !
