  1. agreed. however, as of late, i've found myself eating wayyy too much bread and pasta relative tot he amount of fruits and veggies i consume. also i'm over-relying on soy. hence, i want to experiment with raw food so i can get into the habit of having meals inclining more towards fruits, veggies, etc. raw by day, vegan by night, is what i'm thinking about...
  2. yes--i figured fruit and nuts would be a good snack. but i dunno...if i'm at school for ten hours i can't see myself feeling satiated on nothing but fruit and nuts. i found a couple sandwich recipes which might work tho...
  3. i've been vegan for almost four months now and i'm interested in making the transition to an all- or mostly-raw foods diet. i was wondering if any of you would mind sharing any hints or tips or answering questions? my primary concern is planning ahead. planning ahead has been key to remaining vegan without feeling deprived or tempted, ever. specifically: -i am often at school for hours on end with no access to refrigeration. any one have ideas for me in terms of snacks or meals to bring with me? -why do most raw dessert recipes that i've find favor carob over chocolate. any particular reason? -i'm hypoglycemic FYI--anything to worry about there? -any one have any book ideas for me? i have the book "RAW" by juliano so far and i'm excited by some of the recipes--other suggestions would be appreciated! thanks!!
  4. i think the question you ask could be rephrased--is yoga enough for YOU to get to where you want to be? well, if you've been only doing yoga to work out, and only ashtanga yoga, and you're not satisfied with your progress, the answer is clearly no, right? i dont know where you practice, but you might seek out other more challenging types of yoga. i have taken yoga classes that have kicked my ass. yoga flow classes can be amazing cardio workouts, just as hard as any step or aerobics class. i am one of t hese people who can build muscle just by THINKING about lifting weights, so building muscle has never been an issue for me. i think there are some people who would probably need weight training in addition to yoga to gain muscle, but i don't think i'm one of them. but, as my trainer always reminds me, diet diet diet!!! you can work out all day every day but if you're not eating right, it won't matter!!
  5. i mean, i usually am at around 1600-1750 but i figured i'd fess up to the 2000 calorie balances that i reach once in awhile in the weekends. salt is probably key for me. you know what's weird is that a couple days after i posted this, i felt brave enough to try on a pair of jeans that haven't fit me in a couple years--since before i gained weight on that evil medicine--and they fit! a little snug, ok, but i haven't been able to put so much as one leg in them for a while now. i think you guys are all onto something re: salt, not eating late, being patient, and reducing my fat intake. oh and my bf has been inspired and told me last week he was transitioning into being vegan!
  6. i was sort of secretly thinking about that when i read some of hte food journals of the raw foodists. i think that if i indulged in--what was it--nine bananas or something? per day, i'd have to make sure i was in a ten foot radius of a toilet at all times.
  7. i used to be an avid fan of bikram. but then i got disenchanted because it was soooo much more expensive than non-bikram. also i missed the vinyasas in other types of yoga... my bf is still a bikram addict tho!
  8. four to five pounds lost in two months is 20+ lbs a year...i guess i shouldn't be so impatient!
  9. i just went to your personal website and saw that you offer online diet/training stuff--good to know for the future, and thanks for sharing all of your workouts with all of us!
  10. a basic day when you're not in pre-contest mode would be super helpful! thanks!!
  11. no no, i'm not thinking of giving up veganism just because i'm not losing weight as quickly as i'd hoped. i am benefitting from it in other ways for sure. and yes, i have gained a lot of muscle tone that is finally starting to peek through. and i know the scale doesn't mean everything but it's hard not to feel demoralized when i eat nothing but plants and whole foods and the scale is hovering close to 170! but true, i haven't been doing as much cardio as i'd like cause it's the week before finals (i'm a grad student still working on my coursework.) i'll add more cardio when this is over and see what happens..-
  12. hey i just became vegan two months ago and i was wondering if you wouldn't mind posting a couple days worth of food journals? most of hte food journals on here are guys'!
  13. yep, i keep a food diary. on most days i eat around 1700 cals per day...once in awhile on the weekend it will get closer to 2000. but remember, i'm a chick with 25% bodyfat and i clocked in at 172 lbs only two months ago. sometimes these foods add up to 2000 calories, but i'm not a junk food vegan for sure. no chips, fries, bread, refined sugar, etc for me. i just feel like i should be losing faster. typical day might be: breakfast: fruit 1 serving walnuts snack: vegetable samosa lunch: vegan wrap with edamame, whole wheat tortilla, salsa, black beans fruit snack: lara bar dinner: veggie burger patty 1/2 sliced avocado sliced tomato vegenaise dessert: smoothie made from lite tofu, dates, unsweetened cocoa OR vegan cookie made from applesauce and whole wheat flour instead of margarine/vegetable shortening and white flour.
  14. of course i love animals, am concerned about the environment, and approve enthusiasitcally of veganism for ethical reasons. however. in my mid twenties, i went on a medication that caused me to gain thirty pounds. i switched meds, and continued what had always been a vigorous workout schedule. i still didn't lose the weight despite working with a personal trainer and sticking to a relatively consistent 1700 calorie a day diet. now, i've been vegan for two months. i still work out 3 to 5 times per week an dinclude HIIT cardio, yoga, and weight training in my regimen. when i started veganism on Jan 2, i was 5'7, and weighted 174 lbs. yesterday i weighed 170 on the exact same scale. i dunno i feel like i should be losing weight at at least a lb a week. i see all these before and after pictures and i wonder how long it took to see a difference? i eat 1600-2000 calories a day, all vegan (duh), no refined sugars, no preservatives, no artificial sweeteners, no hydrogenated oils...i dunno it seems like i should be dropping weight faster, no?
  15. i've always been an animal lover. i was vegetarian for 7 years, starting at age 16, but i was so disorganized and unable to plan that i just ended up eating bread and cheese all the time. i decided to try veganism for a new years even resolution, and i love it. i'm glad to find other vegan fitness enthusiasts!
