Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm has declared today, March 20, 2010, as “Meatout Day” for the Great Lake State. The move has sparked debate and outrage among Michiganders and is a potential blow to the state’s vibrant dairy business.

 

In her proclamation, the governor has pointed to a tie between meat and diseases and states advantages to a vegan diet.

 

Granholm is downplaying the proclamation saying it is only one of many she issues each year. She does not address the impact to commerce if citizens were to follow her recommendation.

 

A special interest proclamation

 

According to the publication “Vegetarian Star”, the proclamation came at the request of Meatout, a non-profit group advocating a vegan lifestyle. Based in Bethesda, Maryland, the group claims Meatout is “the world's largest and oldest annual grassroots diet education campaign”.

 

This is the 25th annual Meatout Day, according to Meatout. Your Examiner was unable to find any other state that has embraced today with a proclamation.

 

WNDU, NBC-16 in Cass County, reports local farmers are planning a cookout on the steps of the capital as a Meatout protest. Cass County is the second largest hog producing county in Michigan.
