m_langlois01
I'm planning on buying foods in bulk from www.bulkfoods.com, but I was wondering how long does it takes before nuts and seeds become rancid if stored in an air-tight container in a cool/dry place (but not refrigerated)? Is it the same with beans and grains? Buying in bulk would cut the cost in almost half!
Guest
Beans and grains don't really get rancid they just won't sprout if they get old. As for nuts in a dry container they shouldn't get rancid they just get bland. I've eaten cashews older than your grandmother and they didn't taste much like anything. Oils are a different story though. I had a .5 liter of olive oil go bad on me once and I didn't notice. I poured it in a pan with garlic then poured it over my pasta. It tasted terrible then I checked the oil and it smelled really bad.
cubby2112
I have heard beans and grains are best within two years and nuts within one year, so long as they aren't omega-3-rich, which is supposed to make them less stable.

m_langlois01
So I guess I'll only buy bulk quantities of grains and beans... Thanks for your input!
HealthyElijah
I always keep my nuts and seeds in the freezer for optimal freshness and to prevent rancidity. Sounds like you will not have this option though.
