I was always under the impression that it is a synthethic, but I was curious about your question so I looked it up and here's what Wikipedia had to say:

 

Rayon is a manufactured regenerated cellulosic fiber. Because it is produced from naturally occurring polymers, it is neither a truly synthetic fiber nor a natural fiber; it is a semi-synthetic fiber [1]. Rayon is known by the names viscose rayon and art silk in the textile industry. It usually has a high lustre quality giving it a bright shine. Rayon contains the chemical elements carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen.

It said cellulose and from what I remember that's what surrounds a plant cell wall Ibelieve.
