jungleinthefrunk
Suggestions for affordable, calorie free sugar substitute that's vegan/not animal tested? Splenda is out, right? I've been going through truvia like water and its expensive, and i dont know how it developed in the lab. Xylitol?? Anybody? I'm bulking but still told I need to cut my sugar!! Fallen_Horse
Saccharin probably hasn't been tested on animals in quite some time, and it's what I use to sweeten my tea. Also you can buy generic brand stevia in Wal-Mart or another place like that?
jungleinthefrunk
Never thought of generic/walmart.....I thought saccharin had a bad rap? I mean honestly I kind of use whatever sweetener is available...I work in three different offices so I have access to equal one day, sweet n lo the other, and then splenda the rest of the week..... and truvia when I'm home. has aspartame been tested recently? What do vegans believe about its health effects?
Fallen_Horse
Most recently, saccharin has been pretty much cleared of any suspicion, but most 'whole foodies' still try to avoid it. A good article to read is: http://www.latimes.com/health/la-he-nutrition-lab-saccharin-20101227,0,4550768.story Each person makes their own choices! Saccharin has been found to be safe, while stevia has not (yet), so I try to mix my sweeteners throughout the days. I use some stevia for baking/smoothies at home and saccharin for sweetening my tea, but that's about it.
vegimator
I watched these videos recently by the vegan doc Michael Greger -http://nutritionfacts.org/topics/artificial-sweeteners/ It looks like erythriol, stevia and xylitol (though xylitol will have a laxative effect if you use a lot of it) are the best options. I just made ice cream with a blend of all three! Stevia's best in moderation apparently but I think that's only if you use a sweetener derived from the steviol glycosides. Newer stevia extracts use rebaudioside A which all studies so far have shown to be harmless.
Fallen_Horse
I do like Dr. Gregor's videos, but if the FDA and the EPA both say that saccharin is safe, then I am ok using it.
