n her stimulating book, The Lifelong Activist: How to Change the World Without Losing Your Way, Hillary Rettig argues, "[M]ost people seem to leave activism involuntarily, and that's a problem on many levels. When an activist burns out, she typically derails her career and damages her self-esteem and relationships. She also deprives her organization and movement of her valuable experience and wisdom. The worse problem, however, may be that when an activist burns out she deprives younger activists of a mentor, thus making them more likely to burn out. And so it's a vicious circle, with burnout leading to more burnout" (p. 16). Rettig's text, which could have easily been …

So, I was browsing this hippy little bookstore next to Real Food Daily in Santa Monica while waiting for a table to eat dinner with my brother when I came upon this book: Incredibly Delicious- Recipes for a New Paradigm by Gentle World ISBN 0-929274-25-3. I'm a HUGE sucker for little bookstores and I ALWAYS buy something when I go in them so this book had to come home with me. Well, thank god for my unhealthy obsession with books because I LOVE this book! It's a cookbook, all vegan, and has a really decent raw vegan section also. It has some great colored pictures of the prepared food and I find 95% of the recipes to be very simple to prepare without a ton of strange in…

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081110/ap_on_re_af/eu_obit_makeba JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – She died just how she wanted to — singing on stage for a good cause. And her songs wafted out of taxis and radios, as fellow Africans struggled with their grief at her passing. Miriam Makeba, the "Mama Africa" whose sultry voice gave South Africans hope when the country was gripped by apartheid, died early Monday of a heart attack after collapsing on stage in Italy. She was 76. In her dazzling career, Makeba performed with musical legends from around the world — jazz maestros Nina Simone and Dizzy Gillespie, Harry Belafonte, Paul Simon — and sang for world leaders such as Joh…

http://www.bolivarmonews.com/articles/2009/11/13/opinion/doc4afc8916253a1163601590.txt Stupid. Stupid. Stupid. Once again a segment of animal agriculture has played right into the hands of one of our most vehement adversaries. Again, it was an animal slaughter plant, and again an undercover operative of the Humane Society of the United States recording obviously brutal treatment of dairy calves. It happened in Grand Isle, Vt. The U.S. Department of Agriculture shut down Bushway Packing Inc. on Oct. 30 after viewing video footage showing week-old Holstein and Jersey calves being bled and cut while still conscious. What were these guys thinking — especially the US…

http://www.newsday.com/entertainment/music/norah-jones-the-fall-takes-some-good-risks-1.1587195 Norah Jones' voice sounds so effortlessly beautiful that it sometimes overshadows everything in its path. That's not necessarily a bad problem - especially when you're the singer - but it does make it difficult to get people to pay attention to the song when everything fades in the presence of the singer. On "The Fall" (Blue Note), Jones took the challenge seriously, taking on a new, more rock-oriented band and crafting songs that can better hold their own with her vocals. The extra effort pays off, with the album's best moments coinciding with her biggest risks. The p…

So...I hate talking in front of groups. My friends tell me that I look like a natural, but I assure you - I'm sweating my ass off and super duper jittery. For one of my classes, we had to do a presentation on our dreams about our career, where we want to go in life, yada yada yada. Most people in my class explained how they wanted to continue their education, maybe become supervisors or administrators to hospitals, other people talked about how they wanted to be advocates for nurses' rights, and other people talked about how they wanted to be nurse educators. It came to my presentation, the very last one (oh god...). And I loaded my powerpoint. They all sat, half not p…

http://thinkingreed.wordpress.com/2009/11/13/noah-climate-change-and-assisted-migration/ In Celia Deane-Drummond and David Clough’s Creaturely Theology, Christopher Southgate expands on an idea he discussed briefly in his recent book The Groaning of Creation (see my posts here). Southgate points out that, due to human-caused climate change, we’re looking at a massive die off of animal life in the near future (what has been called the sixth great extinction). Naturally, when we debate climate change and what, if anything, we should do about it, we focus primarily on the costs and benefits to us. Occasionally, if we’re feeling expansive, we might briefly consider the effe…

Friends, do you know of an application that can be used to work, delegate responsibilities and set new tasks to others, spending a minimum of time on it? It has become much easier for me to organize my work time and the time of my colleagues since I installed and started using Voicet task manager http://voicet.info/ I advise everyone who manages a team of employees to have and actively use this assistant. What can you say about such a tool?
