YigalWeinstein
very good. I am having a dinner party tonight and I'm the cook. I am going to use your sauce - I planted tomatos and oregano so I should use them. This sauce with a good pasta, and vegan cheesecake for dessert is where its at + lots of salad. loveliberate
Thanks for the recipe. Cant ya think of a more intelligent & descriptive, non-sexist word to describe your "step dads mom" though?
veganbarbie
nope, she is a bitch.
YigalWeinstein
I would say why disgrace female dogs by associating your step mom with such lovely creatures. Would "a disgrace to the human species" be a better pc phrase for your step mom?
loveliberate
VB, If she is cooking food then I severely doubt that she is a female canine. The word "bitch" is a very sexist & hateful word typically used to put down strong and/or vocal women (and occasionally men, though then the insult is more that they are being/acting like a woman, as if that was a bad thing...) and using that word is offensive towards women in general. Same general idea as using words like "nigger", "faggot", "kyke" or "wop". So please dont use word! YW, Good points. I want to add that it's not about being "pc" (I really hate that word but that's anouther conversation...), just about having basic respect for others. veganbarbie
I don't believe there are any "bad" words. You won't make me believe there are. If it would make you happier I can call her a mean old stupid hag?? Ppl even say bitch on TV.. are you calling in and telling them to cut it out? There are larger problems to worry about than vocab, this post was about the recipe that was super awesome.. not words. As for fag or nigger.. I have friends that refer to themselves as those words.. THEY ARE JUST WORDS. It's not the end of the world, it's just that too many people are sensitive to it. I didnt call her a bitch bc of her gender, race, religion, but bc of her actions. veganbarbie
I assume you dont use the word asshole. That would insinuate that assholes are negative in some way, and you wouldnt want to offend your asshole, I mean you need it, and it works well, and it wouldnt like being used as negative term. Right? HAHAHA I crack myself up. OH NO, we cant say crack can we?? That is insulting to cocaine!!!

YigalWeinstein
Sticks and stones may brake your bones but words will never hurt you. or more eloquently by the master of renaissance English prose, What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other word would smell as sweet. VB you wrote, There are larger problems to worry about than vocab I don't think this is quite so obvious a statement as you claim. Miscommunication is probably the greatest, or at least one of the greatest, problems when dealing with other humans. Verbal communication makes up a large ammount of communication. It stands to reason that vocab. and the meanings in the words are of a great importance, in that understanding the nature of them has a great chance of stopping the problems they create. The abuse of words is possible. To rob meaning from words is sometimes extremely useful, and necessary and so to apply "violence" to a word that holds too much meaning perhaps is acceptable or even a good idea, depending on the context. However, if the social meaning of words are being robbed at an extermely fast rate, cultural literacy, i.e. a way of understanding each other through verbal communication becomes more difficult and in some cases almost impossible. This is a waste "meaning" resources. This is unfortunate. I think that words do have meaning. In fact many words have more than one meaning. To be conscious of the meanings, to be conscious that words can hurt, heal, teach, etc. is also as important as realizing that words in themselves are not the objects they refer to. To set standards on how truthful a person is on what they say to how they act is sometimes important. To not care about the vocab. that is used is very unfortunate. Are there really bigger problems than miscommunication? Isn't in general misscommunication largely a result of certain people being too concerned with the meaning of words. For example if I was asked, "Do you believe in God?". The obvious response in my perspective is, "what do you mean by God?". Therefore both taking the connotations of words as being of little importance and of taking the meaning of a given word too seriously can both have disasterous effects on the relationships we have with others. The word bitch refers both to a female dog, and a female who is for what ever reason "bad". It means a female dog and when we don't like a female human we decide that they deserve to be called such a word. How do you want to associate your words. I think words have meaning, and should be associated together with truth as the guiding principle.
veganbarbie
First of all she is my STEP FATHERS MOTHER, not my step mom. Don't tell me what to say/what words to use when you can't even read. I posted a RECIPE on this FORUM so I could share it with you, I didnt have to share it. When I posted it, I had copied and pasted it, because it was once my bulletin on myspace. I wanted to share it with my fellow vegan friends on here. I thought about changing it, and just posting the recipe and not the short story about it, but thought, "these are cool fellow vegan liberals, wtf does it matter?" and posted it in it's original form anyway. However, I'm taking my awesome recipe that was less important to everyone than the word bitch and Im leaving.

loveliberate
VB, I agree with Raven: I dont think you should leave the forums. I'm sorry that you seem to be feeling so defensive about this. On the other hand if using oppressive/offensive words is more important to you than participating in these forums, I understand and respect your decision to leave. I generally agree that there are no "bad" words - it's all about how they are used. The words we're discussing are used oppressively and are very hurtful to many people. If you do not mean them in that way, why contribute to the problem? There are far better ways to communicate ourselves without being offensive and oppressive to entire groups of people. YigalWeinstein
VB, I agree with Raven, and LL I don't think you should leave this forum unless you feel too uncomfortable to stay. I think in general we are all very caring people interested in + change and while we have differences of opinion, religion, custom, etc. we all share enough to relate.
