endcruelty
i emailed the Toronto Vegetarian Association (veg.ca) about volunteering my services for the organization during an event or meet or whatever, and about a week later i get a reply saying they would be glad to have an official photographer for The 24th Annual Vegetarian Food Fair. no pay, but i don't care, it's experience, maybe i'll get a reference letter, and doing it for a kick ass organization. :D i'm so uber excited not sure if i'm 100% confirmed, but it sounds possible

Trev
I photographed the Taste of Health last September here in Vancouver for the organization that put it on - Earthsave Canada. It was pretty tough. I shot about 1800 photos in 2 days, and edited that down to around 200. I was really racing around between all the different events and talks, shooting all the stalls in the main hall and trying to get candids too. I was busy! I didn't get to enjoy anything really, but I did get to meet a lot of the speakers and talk to them. A lot of the vendors wanted copies of their shots for their own use, which I cleared with Earthsave before hand. Also, make sure TVA is okay with you using any of the images for your own portfolio. They should be. The most difficult thing I found was lighting. Earthsave didn't get any of the stage lighting turned on, so it was flat sodium vapour - ugly! I used a remote flash which my trusty assistant (Suz!) held for me. It worked okay. I had to do a lot of photoshopping to get the colour balance right and stuff. It was a full 2 days of post production. I'm not sure I will do it again next year, but I'm sure they'll ask. I just shot an ad for them, for free of course. It's hard to say what it'll be like - just make sure they're prepared, and they can tell you what they want. Make a shot list and be as prepared as you can. Go and scope out the venue, take some test shots, look at the light etc. If you're really prepared, you'll be better able to shoot stuff that you didn't expect and deal with surprises, good and bad. Make sure you have fun doing it though. I don't know how experienced you are, so forgive me if I'm saying stuff you already know!

endcruelty
I photographed the Taste of Health last September here in Vancouver for the organization that put it on - Earthsave Canada. [rest of post omitted to save space] dammit!!!! ok i'm bowing out jk ...... sounds like a ton of work, but really, i'm up for it. i would consider myself a experienced/armature and i hope the little bits of stress from other shoots will help, but now i'm scared a little lol i figure i'd start an event on facebook since there wasn't one up yet, so ya http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=14596598070
Trev
Sorry, dude, didn't mean to scare ya! I just wanted to share my experience with a very similar situation. For me, Earthsave wasn't very organized and didn't know what they wanted. I gave them all the photos and heard nothing from them for months. Just not very professional. Now I know all the questions to ask before hand! It should be fun and a great experience! I found that shooting all these people in the vegan community was a great way to get to know them all (that sounds funny)...
