  1. Excellent discussion. I've been involved with local peace and civil rights issues over the past 15 years and my views have changed quite a bit over time. I won't go into what they were and what they are now, but every person needs to decide what's right for them and that is shaped by their experiences.

I picked this specific point from Asocial Ape that I think is a fundamental truism for me when I get "overwhelmed" with how I see the world and how I want to change it:

in my ideal world, we each do as much as we can, every day to diminish our impact, and to offer succor and safety to the innocent.

Doing something, rather than nothing, is always a great starting point. Deciding what you *can* do, rather than what you should do, was a liberating thought for me. My first responsibility is to my family and to make sure they are cared for and nurtured. This has taken 98% if my free time (i.e. away from work), and deciding how to spend my time on issues has been trying. In the end, I prioritized, made some choices, wrote them down, and made peace with them. I'll review in 6 months and see if they need to change.

In short, if you are overwhelmed, take one achievable step in the direction you thing will make positive change, and stick with it.

  2. If you are running one mile at a time, you are not ready to start doing intervals yet! Intervals and other faster workouts are great for improving your speed, but you must get your endurance to a point where you can handle greater distances before you try to go faster.

A heart rate monitor is a good suggestion. But don't use it to push yourself to go faster, use it to ensure that you're doing your runs at an aerobic pace (60% of max heart rate). Do those runs for progressively longer distances, taking walk breaks if you need to. I would suggest increasing the length of your runs by around five minutes each week.

Once you get up to running for half an hour or more, than you can start improving your speed and doing those fun workouts that Matt mentioned.

    Good luck!

Agreed. I didn't see the 1 mile per day, so markc7 is right on about the 30 min or more. As a rule of thumb (if you cannot get a heart rate monitor), a slow jog (4 mph) nets 2 miles in 1/2 hour, or 15 minute miles if you need to gauge it.
  3. I can't vote because it's all relative, and the best athletes all specialize for their particular sport, meaning that they have to focus on different types of training opposed to other sports. Some emphasize agility, some speed, some endurance, some pure power. They aren't plainly comparable, in my opinion.

I would pick the most "fit" athletes as triathletes, though. Thought primarily considered endurance athletes, they have to balance different events which require full body fitness, particularly at the top levels.

  4. Oh, I totally agree about his importance. Terry O'Quinn is a great actor; I just felt most of the stuff he was given by the writers in Season 3 wasn't that great. The first two seasons he really had room to grow as a character. But I'm still happy he won. And I'm expecting Locke to become REALLY important soon.
