  1. In looking for decent quality rice, pea, and other proteins, I have come across only a few limited sites. Does anything know of any good sites to purchase these items for a good price? I sort of prefer buying it in larger quantities to drive the price down. Also, is there anything else you recommend on the cheap besides rice and pea protein?

I use Vegan Complete Meal Replacement from Pure Advantage. It has 26g of Pea and Rice Protein per scoop. It's normally $32.95 per tub, but right now, they're having a buy one/get one sale (ending tomorrow). http://www.purevegan.net.

  2. Thank you all for your wonderful advice and kind words (and sorry I didn't get back to you sooner, but wasn't on the computer all weekend). Hugs to you Vegan Essentials for helping the squirrel and mouse pass on humanely and everyone else who has helped an injured being in need. I had decided to take pamela's advice and went out looking for him/her, but the bird was not where I left him -- he was right side up and 3 bushes down, hiding under a bush.

As they were predicting a storm, I picked him up and put him in a box. He was quiet most of the day, but at the end of the day was a little livelier. By Saturday, he was flapping his wings, but didn't fly out of the box. I wanted to let him free, but he wouldn't fly out of the box and a rehab'er advised that that means there's something wrong. A wildlife rehab volunteer came and picked him up. I hope I did the right thing, because he wasn't flying and living in a box is no way to live. I couldn't just leave him if he couldn't fly. I hope he's doing alright at the rehab.

Oh hooray! It sounds like this story might have a happy ending! Please let us know what the wildlife rehab tells you when you check in.

  3. I'm so glad to belong to a forum where people care this much about their fellow creatures.

I don't really have anything to add to what the others have posted. Last fall I had a similar situation with finding a seriously injured bird. I also didn't know what to do, so I started with the police. The police directed me to animal control, who directed me to a nearby wildlife conservancy. It was a process, but at least now I have better idea of what to do in an emergency. And now that you've had this experience, you'll know better what to do next time, too.

Try not to be too hard on yourself. I know it's easier said than done. You tried. You put the bird out of harm's way so he could pass in peace. So many others wouldn't have even bothered.

  4. I find that when I tell people I'm vegan, they think it's fun to pick apart my diet and lifestyle. For example, they will say "Have you checked the ingredients in that?" Or point out other areas of my life where I am not being a perfect humanitarian, like "Well when you walk or drive a car you kill bugs you know!"

It's really annoying. I'm sure these people are just intimidated, but since I'm not quick-witted I don't know what to say. I feel like they are really not looking for an answer from me, and just want to prove that I am not perfect (which is ridiculous because nobody is perfect).

Any real-life suggestions? Many times these situations happen in casual conversation, so it's not like I have time to give them a lengthy explanation of veganism! I need some short, realistic and maybe witty statements or potential replies for these people.

    Here's my $.02.

There's a shirt out there with a saying on it that goes something like: "Yes, I'm vegan. No, my shoes aren't leather. Yes, I get enough protein. Yes, I have a life." I wish I could wear it all the time.

I'm not the most quick-witted person either. I often come up with a great response a week after someone's made a comment to me. But, whenever someone takes a poke at me and asks me if I've checked the ingredients in what I'm eating, I just say, "Yes", give them a confident smile, and leave it at that.

All you can do is do your best not to inflict intentional cruelty on animals and other humans, which includes making conscious decisions about what you buy and what you eat. And maybe that's a good response. "I'm not perfect, but I'm doing what I can in the best way I know how." It's hard to come up with something brilliant when you're put on the defensive.

I know there are bound to be better responses from other folks here, so I'll hand it over to them. I'll be interested in what they have to say, too.

  5. I'm not sure if it's appropriate to suggest this at this point, but I'll post it in the event anyone wants to take a look at this. I use Pure Advantage Vegan Complete Meal Replacement with Multi-GuarD. (Long title....). You can find it at http://www.purevegan.net and at Vegan Essentials. It has 26g of Pea and Rice Protein per scoop and tons of vitamins and amino acids. It's a light powder and blends super easily - more easily than any other brand I've ever used - and it tastes delicious. I use the vanilla flavor and it's so tasty, you could literally just eat it out of the tub it comes in. (I don't do that, honest. ) It is a bit pricey, though - $32.95 a tub.

  6. They just don't know any better.

The main goal of most of these guys is just to get as huge as possible and they don't want to listen to anything that might jeopardize that goal.

I'm so happy to have found a trainer/nutritionist who works with guys like this daily...(He's an expert poster whose advice is sought after on the Bodybuilding.com board)....., but is open to a Vegan lifestyle, has seen Vegans get shredded, put on lean muscle mass, etc. and most importantly BELIEVES that it can be done as a Vegan.

In order to make change, we have to learn a way to find some common ground. That's why I firmly believe (and I know you believe this too Robert) that if we use the principles of Bodybuilders and Athletes that are shown to work and just change the protein sources to suit our lifestyle, we can come together as a group.

We need to learn to find common ground. Both communities can learn things from eachother.

You know, this is a really good post and I think it shows what a reasonable person you are -- and that's good! I try to take my cues from folks like you and Robert who seem to have a nice, measured approach to things. I tend to be a little more feisty myself. I chalk it up to being a Leo.

  7. Hi everybody!

Just wanted to say hello and introduce myself. I'm female, vegan and I love to lift! And I guess that pretty much sums it up...

I'm still a newbie to lifting, but I'm planning on starting a journal here tomorrow after my workout.

I'm looking forward to talking with you all! Glad I found a site for vegans! That rocks!
