robert
Yeah, it has nothing to do with steroids, right Johan? The answer is 5-fold: 1. Genetics 2. Drugs 3. Dedication, persistence, and determination 4. Lots of training and lots of eating 5. Time
xjohanx
and by genetics we're not talking about genetics to build muscle. it's about genetics to resist the potential side effects of the steroids. that's the most important part.
robert
I stand by my five-fold answer I'd love to see pics of Jay, Dexter and others 5 weeks out. Also, does anyone know if Victor Martinez decided to compete or not?

They have drugs to counter the side effects of the main drugs, so I suppose that "money" is the appropriate additional factor more than genetics to resist the effects, unless someone is too cheap, broke or likes the risks that come with taking large doses of anabolics/androgenics

VeganEssentials
question: is it a miracle that every bodybuilder gets tested on drugs constantly? From what I know, different federations have different testing policies, and not all feds are going to be up on checking to ensure that their BBers are clean since it'd wipe out their entire roster

robert
From what I understand, the IFBB has very few banned substances that they test for...one being prescription diuretics (I think). I know Jay got into some trouble a while back for something like that....but pretty much everything and anything is a go at the O. There are Natural Federations that do polygraph, urine and even blood tests to not only winners but all competitors...and some federations that test "some" randomly for a short list of substances. From what I know from hanging around these guys for about 8 years now, is that anything goes...as long as you don't get caught by authorities. One guy I know and chatted with for some length spent a good 1.5 years in prison for importing steroids from Thailand. He happened to get caught and refused to give the names of who they were for (famous bodybuilders). So, he spent some time behind bars. Other IFBB Pros have been in trouble for have steroids found at their workplace, etc. But as far as the federations themselves are concerned...they don't seem to worry about much because they sport would lose fans, $, etc. I think some guys spend about $100,000 in show preparation quarterly or semi-annually, so it's an expensive habit. Many end up in hospitals too for a great number of reasons. Some like Jay are as careful as they can be to ensure as much safety as possible. Nope. For something like the Olympics, yes, but for BBing, that's not the case.

Of course Dennis, Jay and Dexter take tons of steroids, just like larry scott, mike mentzer, sly, hulk hogan, arnold, frank zane and lou ferrigno did. Without steroids Bodybuilding propably Bodybuilding wouldnt be so popular. No one would fly to Las Vegas and pay a hundreds of dollars for a mister o show with 170 lbs natural bodybuilders. robert
Both are looking HUGE! Of course bodybuilding wouldn't be where it is without steroids and some of my friends take them. It's just one of the answers to the questions, "How do they get 'that' Big?" As well as the other things mentioned; time, money, genetics, etc. I'll be at the O this year and I'm looking forward to it!
Richard
Wait... When you have legs of this size, how do you go about purchasing trousers that fit properly? Because not many people will be those dimensions, to get it to fit right you'd have to get them tailor-made right?
Guest
These guys look absolutely awful. If bodybuilding is about roids, cheating, etc. - it's definitely not what I want to be a part of. Besides, what's so damn exciting about seeing an absurdly muscular guy and knowing that if not for drugs, he would be nowhere near that size? "Wow, drugs worked wonders for this piece of meat." "Yeah, they did." In my opinion, it would be a million times more interesting to see what could people achieve with just hard work, proper nutrition, etc. (i.e. naturaly), instead of looking at a bunch of dumbasses whose muscles got inflated like balloons due to taking toxic shit into their mouths (and veins). It's getting clearer and clearer to me why so many people (including a lot of weightlifters, powerlifters, etc.) despise BBing and refer to it only when joking. VeganEssentials
The thing is, a very large portion of olympic weightlifters, powerlifters, Highland games competitors and strongman/woman competitors often use steroids as well. It's not at all remotely limited to BBing. Then, you can add on sprinters, pole vaulters, hammer throwers, shot putters, baseball players, football players, hockey players, rugby players and just about anyone else that competes in a sport where speed, strength and sometimes size can come into play. BBers simply take it to the extreme, because it's about getting as large as possible. Definitely don't kid yourself - your favorite athletes in just about any given sport will be doing something illegal, just probably not to the same degree as a pro BBer will be doing because they have different goals. There are plenty of natural BB competitions out there, but again, they don't get the same coverage because they're not as "impressive" the the normal BB enthusiast. Just like how you can compete in any sport, if you want to be #1 against the current competition, you're almost guaranteed to need to use something extra to be on their level. I'm not condoning it, but that's the state of sport, and I don't forsee things changing. At the same time, people need to remember this - someone like Ronnie Coleman, Jay Cutler or Dennis Wolf would STILL be massive even if they trained clean, just not to the degree they are now. Steroids, while being an edge to get bigger/stronger/faster, do not do the work for you, and there are plenty of guys who are on the sauce who don't get any impressive gains from it and will never be competitive in their sport of choice no matter how much they take in the way of drugs. I've met a few people who have spent thousands on steroids and used off and on over a few years' time, and they're always going to be mediocre athletes who would likely have gotten the same results from a few years' more hard training. They'll never compete against a top-notch pro BBer because they're not capable of reaching the same level even with drugs. Steroids are no guarantee that someone will be world-class, but they will take world-class people and take them to a whole new level. We can get mad at the fact that it's all too prevalent, but we can never say that these people would not have developed extremely impressive physiques/strength/speed/skill/etc. without the drugs. The drugs simply put them to the next level to reach the most they could get from their bodies, but a vial of testosterone never moved the barbell for someone, never shaved a half second off of someone's sprint time, never hit a baseball 20 feet further - the person taking them still had to work for what they accomplished, and while they did inevitably gain from taking illegal performance enhancing drugs, there's no question the people at the top would still have been exceptional athletes without drugs, just not competing at superhuman levels. It's perfectly fine to be anti-steroid - I'd much prefer to see them not exist in sports, but we're going to have to contend with this from here on out. Nothing is clean any longer, everything is corrupted at the top levels. It's all about our own choices and how to go about training for what we want. These guys look absolutely awful. If bodybuilding is about roids, cheating, etc. - it's definitely not what I want to be a part of. Besides, what's so damn exciting about seeing an absurdly muscular guy and knowing that if not for drugs, he would be nowhere near that size? "Wow, drugs worked wonders for this piece of meat."
