Update: A statement from animal rights group PETA on the whale attack:

The death of the SeaWorld trainer following the attack by Telly the whale is a tragedy that didn’t have to happen. For years, PETA has been calling on SeaWorld to stop confining oceangoing mammals to an area that to them is like the size of a bathtub, and we have also been asking the park to stop forcing the animals to perform silly tricks over and over again. It’s not surprising when these huge, smart animals lash out. This is not the first incident in which a trainer has been harmed by an animal who has been deprived of any semblance of life. It’s time for SeaWorld to heed PETA’s advice and let marine mammals live in peace with their families in the world’s oceans. Switching to giant robotics would be a win-win situation that could have saved a woman’s life today.

Update: According to reports SeaWorld Orlando has suspended killer whale shows due to the death.

Update: Telly, or Tilikum, the whale involved in today's fatal attack, is a 12,300 lb bull orca, he is almost 30 years old. He also has had a history of human deaths. In 1991, the whale accidentally killed Keltie Byrne, a 20-year-old trainer and University of Victoria student, who fell into his tank at Sealand of the Pacific where he then lived. Tilikum was relocated to SeaWorld Orlando shortly after. In 1999, a 27-year-old park visitor was found dead in the whale's tank. It was believed the man may have snuck into the whale's pool after hours and later drowned.

Tilikum was captured off Iceland in 1983. He has fathered 17 calves in captivity, 10 of them are still alive.

I don't know why PETA wastes everyone's time with this shit. Suggesting that these animals are to be replaced with huge robots is just idiotic.

It's tragic what happened, but don't play it off like it didn't have to happen. These people are professional killer whale trainers, I'm sure they acknowledge the danger of their job. It's not even clear that the animal "lashed out" instead of just playing a bit too forcefully.

They could have played out the plight of the captive mammals, could have at least *tried* to debunk SeaWorld's rescue, rehabilitation, and education efforts, but instead they come out with this.

The problem is that PETA was doing all of those things for YEARS. Tilly hasn't killed one trainer, he has killed three. To make it out as he may have been "playing" is to really belittle the intelligence of cetaceans. Orcas, being of the dolphin family, are arguably as intelligent as human beings according to many studies. The writing was on the wall with this one, PETA told Sea World that this could happen again when they got Tilly from British Columbia and it did.
