hi all. i have been wanting to get back into shape for a while now and my wife wants to start working out to. but here is my dilema. Im 27 years old and ive been diagnosed with an overactive thyroid. the navy has kept me on light duty for almost a year now. i was a partial vegitarian when i was diagnosed with thyroid disease. i ate vegitables, cheese ect withmaybe some eggs or tuna once or twice a month. i had been doing this for about 8 months when i suddenly started drasticaly loosing weight. i went from 196 pounds overweight to 153 pounds in just under 2 months. yeah could be good or bad. went to the doc who started running tests and they came back thyroid disease. the got me on pills to counteract it until they think its safe to remove it. but now the bad part. i have a month and a half to my next physical readyness test. so how do i loose 10 pounds, get myself back into shape, and pass a prt while im still supposed to be on light duty. this would be my third waiver from this because of my medical problems and will possibly be facing a med seperation if i get waived again. i cant get kicked out now because my wife and i are trying to start a family. so i have 2 minutes to do 65 pushups, 2 minutes to do 65 sit ups. and either run a mile and a half in under 13 minutes, or burn 105 calories in 12 minutes on a stationary bike.

now on to my wifes problem. with her family history we thought she had diabetes. test came back and she is in the clear from that. but she has high blood preasure and is way overweight. we have started dieting, baked chicken, steamed vegies etc. but i am williing to give up meat again if i have to an im willing to bet she would to. like i said we are trying to start a family and we are both not in the best of shape to do it. i havent wrked out in over a year and she hasnt done much physical work in the last 2 years.

with that being said i am open to suggestions, hints, and just generally anything you think might help.

thanks

tats

The optimal rate of weight loss is 1 - 2 pounds a week, in order to maximize fat loss and minimize loss of muscle. That almost fits your window. If you create a deficit ( in a healthy whole foods diet ) of 500 calories a day, you can lose a pound a week ( the first 1 - 2 weeks you will lose more, from a water loss ).

You can read more about how to this here:

Go vegan. See the link in my signature for finding reliable nutrition information from reliable sources. Be very suspicious of any nutrition information from web boards, even this one.

Start ( don't jump in all at once ) eating a vegan diet of mostly whole grains, legumes(beans, soy, peanuts ) vegetables and fruit.

Get a podiatrist to check your wife's feat out and then get her walking. Walking is a great way to strengthen a body that has been out of shape for a while and it can even be combined with a portion controlled diet to take weight off while being kind to a person's joints.
