Tee hee.

By fresh meat I mean newly vegan! I'm a fitness/figure competitor as well as a recreational runner. I work as a full time Mom of 2 boys, personal trainer and group exercise instructor. I live with my husband of 8 years, 6 cats and dog in Marietta, GA.

I've been inspired by a friend and fellow competitor, the fabulous Heather Morgan, to give the vegan lifestyle a chance while continuing my training and into my future competitions.

A few days in and I'm learning the more you educate yourself, the easier it is. Having competed in fitness I'm accustomed to preparing all of my food before I leave the house, so 'finding' things to eat hasn't been too hard.

Another thing I've noticed is my hypoglycemia has been inactive since making the change. That rules!

I look forward to learning from all of the great athletes on this board! (And the non athletes too!)

Hello and welcome. I new to veganism also. I am happy to hear that you are not having a problem with your hypoglycemia since the change.

Please let me know what you have eaten before and are eating now. I have had problems with my blood sugar going to low before also.

Thanks and great to hear.

Hi Barb!

I was eating lots of sugar free junk (cookies, posicles, pudding, etc), processed foods, too much caffiene, and lots of dairy. Since adding more fruit, tofu, whole grains, nuts and eliminating artificial sweeteners, I feel great. On the typical bodybuilding diet I became carb-phobic. I stopped worrying about getting "enough" protien and too much sugar and just ate balanced.

I also don't rely on caffiene in the afternoon, I'm in a steady state all day.

Welcome to our group Moxie!

Heather Morgan is really cool, and I think out of all of us on the forum, she has been competing the most lately!

Thanks for joining our group. It is great to have another competitive vegan athlete on here. The more we make ourselves know in our chosen sports, the better. We're having impacts on people across the globe.

We're glad you found your way to us, and I'm sure Heather had something to do with it

All the best and welcome aboard!

She looked absolutely stunning in the October 7th show! (I competed too) She's been totally supportive- not to mention a tad bit excited- about my recent decision.

Next for me is the Georgia half marathon in March to support a charity, April is the Womens tri-fitness in Atlanta, July is a figure comp, October is Nationals and November will be my first "pro" show since winning my pro card in April of this year. (FAME)

During this time I'll also start attending massage therapy school part time while working and taking care of the boys. Training and competing will be a stress reliever!

Wow, that's quite the schedule! It's amazing that you can balance all those jobs/competitions/etc. There are a few other runners on this site, so be sure to join us in the Endurance Sports section.

Welcome Moxie-Janis!!

How awesome!! In my intro I said I wanted to look like a figure competitor. I am a new vegan also (8days). I am a personal trainer too and had bought into the animal protein, carb phobic thing. Has your energy level or performance changed since making the switch? I noticed within one week that my running has gotten faster for my 3 mile loop. I knocked 1 min. 30 sec. off my usual time without even trying. Going vegan is the only change I made. It is kind of weird. Anyway, any helpful hints to looking like a figure competitor would be greatly appreciated.

Good luck with all of your competitions!!

Chalisa:)

P.S. You inspired me to throw my Splenda in the trash. I have to psyche myself up to cutting down on coffee, though.

Chalisa:

Congrats to you too!

I've been much more energetic, hypoglycemia is much improved and my skin is clearing up!

-If you wanna look like a figure chick, don't shy away from the big weights.

-If you don't already, add sprinting and stadiums to your weekly schedule. Great for leaning out the legs, ham/glute, overall conditioning.

-Master the art of walking in 5" clear heels while wearing a $300 bikini you can't swim in.

You must have nerves of steel. You have great advice. I have been avoiding sprints, but must add them.

Quick question--Do you agree with literature that says it is hard to lose bodyfat when you drink a lot of coffee? Because of the increase in cortisol and fluctuations in insulin level? I drink a ton of coffee and have had a very hard time losing bodyfat despite a clean diet and good exercise routine. I am in denial about giving up coffee, unless someone tells me they have had experience losing weight by dumping it.

Thanks for the help. You are inspiring!!!
