Fried apple pie alternative?

When I say fried I mean those little "blue bird" or "hostess" type apple pies. I used to love these things but they have HFCS(high fructose corn syrup) and all sorts of preservatives. Anyone ever make these? The filling doesn't seen hard but what would I use for the outer pie shell and would I bake or fry?

Come on Lobster help a brah out!

I've never made them before but I would probably bake them (I suppose you *could* fry them, but baking would be oh so much more healthier).

I would suggest getting a pastry crust recipe. There are oodles of them on the internet. Some use shortening (you could use Earth Balance non-hydrogenated shortening) and some use oil. I haven't found my 'perfect' pie crust recipe yet. But here are a few different ones you could try:

Maybe someone else on here has an amazing recipe? I've tried making pie with 'healthier' pastry that uses whole wheat pastry flour and very little fat, but honestly they never turn out all that good, or as least the ones I've tried to date haven't. Admittedly I don't make pie all that often though.

Once you make your pastry recipe, you want to roll it out in circles (probably about 6" diameter or something like that). Then you put the filling in the middle, fold over the circle and pinch it closed. You would probably want to bake it on something like 400-425 for 20-25 minutes. Just keep an eye on it because I'm guessing on that one.

Damnit, now I'm craving apple pie.

Jimi, you're a genius!

Lobster! You're a genius, too!

I bet this wouldn't be terribly hard. Too bad i could only experiment on myself because I bet VeganEssentials is the closest forum member to me and he's 5 hours away!!

I'll see what i can do, though. Might not get to it until next weekend, though..

I would just find vegan alternatives to the butter(earth balance), biscuits(vegan ones), and milk(nut milk)

ok, so this is what I found on the question asked:

Step 1:

1/4 Cup Sugar.

1 tsp Nutmeg.

2 tbsp Cinnamon.

1 tsp Vanilla Flavor.

3 tsp Earthbalance Butter.

Step 2:

Mix all ingredients from step 1 in a large bowl. Heat in microwave for 1 minutes. Butter will be melted. . (Or in a sauce pan cook on medeum heat, untill butter is melted. Stir until all ingredients are blended together.

Step 3:

Carefully add your can of apples into the mixture. stir untill apples are completely covered with the cinnamon mixture.

Step 4:Open can of refrigerator biscuit.

Sounds so yummy!!!! I'm going to attempt a baked version of this one of these days....hopefully sooner than later. Do you think if I used a couple slices of Ezekiel bread with some earth balance and some stevia filled with some cinnamon apple sauce it would be any good? Just a thought as now I have a craving for apple pie.......wonder why?

You could get some vegan phyllo dough. it's sold in the freezer section of the supermarket.

take it out of the package, put it between some moistened clean cotton towels. then lay one sheet on a cookie sheet, brush it with melted earth balance or whatever oil you want... repeat that till you get about 12 sheets thick. then add the filling. you can roll it up into a log and cut the roll in a kid of diamond slice pattern, do like lobster said and cut circles and fold them over and seal (i would use a tofu paste for sealing) or you can put the base sheets in a baking pan, add a layer of filling, and then add 12 (or however many you like) more sheets layered with fat over the top and bake.

i would cook the apples for the filling first.

a few apples, diced

a little lemon juice

some sweeter (i think stevia would work well for this, but evaporated cane juice would be good for sure)

spices to taste: cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, ginger

bake at 350 till golden

this recipe works fabulously with all kinds of fillings. spinach and tofu with lemon and onions is off the hook.

you can also layer the dough without any fat at all... i think it's pretty good. not as good as it is slathered with extra virgin olive oil, but still ok!

the dough is also not really as carb heavy as other versions of dough, because it gets so flaky and full of air.

As far as what oil you use I'm thinking peanut would work fine. I don't use a deep fryer but I think any oil that can handle high heat would probably work. What about coconut oil? Never tried it myself but I hear so much about it. Good luck.
