michaelhobson
We really want to make it to VV. It's just going to have to be a lot closer to then before we can decide if it's feasible. Being unemployeed and cross-country travel are hard to support simultaneously, but we have some ideas how to make it work. Oh uh-uh! No you didn't just suggest that ya'll even might not be coming out to VV07!!!! I really want ya'll to come out & I've spent a great deal of my life engaged in traveling cross-country while unemployed so let's get this figured out! It should be do-able, but it's just impossible to know until it gets here. Um, I mean of course we'll be there.
michaelhobson
Just three months in to this and we're up to 68 registered members! Of course, nearly every registered member has a friend of child or spouse that tags along to the events as well. We actuall had to TURN PEOPLE AWAY for today's potluck. Not at the door of course, but the rsvp was full for weeks and people kept emailing asking why they couldn't come too! We ended up with 36 people in our little townhouse today! Wow! We're have a few ideas for a larger venue for our next potluck. This thing is off the hook! We'll likely to continue some smaller more intimate potlucks at our house, probably limited to 10 or 12 people max. But at least once a month we want to have a huge blowout. Look out Pittsburgh, vegans are taking over the world. PS I'm sure Tiffaney will post some pictures soon!
wannalift
sorry for kind of crashing the party without being an RSVP. who knew the people that said they were going to show up actually showed up. at least we made a lot of food for everyone and didn't stay long. favorite part was when they brought the totally fly frog down and all the kids started dancing. robert
Nice! Your group is growing really quickly! That is great to hear! Things are really hoppin over there! Do you think you'll expand and have speakers, or presentations of some sort during the meetings? I know some groups that started out as potlucks and then it became potluck + a presentation, or potluck + a video, or something like that. Well done and keep us updated! I know some groups that started out as potlucks and then it became potluck + a presentation, or potluck + a video, or something like that. Well done and keep us updated! Thanks Rob. Yes, I have been wanting to add stuff like videos or speakers. We've got some some cool people in the group, our local strongman wannalift, a vegan bellydancer, and a woman who is starting a vegan bakery. There is also a vegan author in the area, and vegan outreach is based near here too. But, I've only got a couple of months before we bail on this city. We'll still be close enough to organize monthly events, but hopefully we can build enough energy in the group to keep a lot more action happening. We have already appointed several co-organizers for the group, and all of them have already posted events that they are in charge of. So, I think this thing will be abled to stand on it's own soon. That's awesome news Michael! Thanks for all of your & Tiffaney's work on this. Thanks mate! I think my years as a cult member have carried over. Just advertise food and they will come! Always greet everyone and make them feel welcome, fill them full of outstanding food before any preaching. They will most likely come back again. Actually, that pattern just comes naturally to me. It's cool to see our new organizers planning events. It's also cool to see people in the group forming friendships and doing things outside the meetup group. We've become really good friends with one family, one single mom, two couples and of course I can't forget wannalift. We do stuff with them pretty regularly in addition to the meetups. It's becoming more of an extended family. Better than I could have ever hoped for when I had to move to Iron City!

michaelhobson
Woohoo! We're just back from our meetup groups Great American Meatout potluck. About 35 people attended, which isn't too bad considering most of Pittsburgh is busy tonight watching basketball on tv and getting drunk off of green beer. We met another VB&F member tonight, Daniel and his friend Noah. Daniel is moving to Pittsburgh, right in our neighborhood, the same weekend we are moving out! Oh well, we'll still be nearby and still holding potllucks, so we'll see him around. We're up to 77 members now! Our latest member joined today, Jo Stepaniak the author of the Uncheese Cookbook and many others. Our first famous member, nice!
Daniel
Michael, it was great meeting you and Tiffaney. Thanks for letting us crash your potluck, and congratulations on such a successful Vegan Meetup group. I hope to make it to another one in a couple months. -Daniel

There was a corn roast/potluck this past Saturday and 27 people attended. It's nice to see some of the kids starting college here that are so excited to find vegans to hang out with. We even have a vegan film student who is shooting a documentary on veganism and is using the meetup group for a lot of his interviews etc. We're back in the city, so if any of yinz are passing through, stop by and say hello. http://vegan.meetup.com/

michaelhobson
Same house again? No, we're sharing a house with a friend in Bridgeville, just outside the city. It's not nearly as spiffy a house or neighborhood, but the rent is dirt cheap and it helps him pay his mortgage since he and his wife just split up. lotus
Awesome that you are creating some vegan community in the 'Burgh! Y'all ever consider a lunch meet up at East End Food Co-op?
michaelhobson
Awesome that you are creating some vegan community in the 'Burgh! Y'all ever consider a lunch meet up at East End Food Co-op? There is a major seating crunch at the co-op, it's hard enough to find a table just for our family. That and the food is way overpriced, you can get so much more for your money at other places nearby. I do like shopping there during off hours though, the kids love to get a plate full of new stuff to try and their own table while I shop.
michaelhobson
The Pittsburgh Vegan Meetup is 224 members strong now, with 40 meetups behind us. Join us on May 17 for a Potluck Picnic in Schenley Park.

robert
I'd love to make it out there one of these days. Do you have guest presenters or anything like that? I've been speaking for about a year now at venues all over and I'm getting better all the time. Any chance I could come out there and give a presentation?
michaelhobson
So far, we haven't had any presenters. We really should though, and I've always thought it would be cool to have you as a guest speaker. Let me know when you are going to be on this side of the country, I'm sure we can put something together. We even have some vegan celebrities as members, like Jo Stepaniak author of The Uncheese Cookbook.
