JW
Damn!!!! I did it again! (sounds kinda like a Britney Spears song doesn't it?)Hurt my back I mean.Played soccer last night. It felt okay after but it's REALLY cold outside now. I woke up this morning with a fair abit of pain in my lower middle back. I figure going straight outside in that freezing cold immediately after playing may have tightened things up somewhat. I'll bet those 20 yr olds we played last night don't have such problems

JW
Oh Christmas time.............My son wants an ipod, a new skateboard, and a PS2 in that order. On the one hand, I think.... commercialism!!!! greed!!!!!On the other, I think hmmmm that might be fun..... Now how do you manipulate an 11 year old to choose the PS2 and all the games that I like??? In reality, he will likely only get one of the above but a manchild can always dream right? JW
Ever wonder how you got to be where you are today? I wanted to be a Phy-Ed teacher since about grade 4.I have always loved sports. Everything about sports. But somehow, when I finished highschool, there were virtually no jobs in my city. I decided to be practical and take business. When I graduated with my undergrad degree I once again explored becoming a Phys-Ed teacher. Alas, the market was even worse!!! 3 of my friends who went into Phys-ed all had no jobs. I was accepted into the Masters of Physical Education program, but again took the practical route....... I became an accountant!!! I'm 44 now and still have dreams and guess what?My 11 year old son told me the other day that HE might want to be a Phys-Ed teacher when he grows up!!!!! JW
Yikes!!!JW lost his temper last night!!! Had a soccer game last night and I took exception to rough play by an opposing player. The league is supposed to be a recreational one. This one player on the opposition started a shoving match with one of our players in the first half. In the second half, that same player charged up behind me (trying to get the ball from me) and took out my ankle with a nasty kick (my bad ankle) Now I'm sure that wasn't his intent, but tackling from behind in a rec league is not a good thing!I think the frustration of seeing such actions coupled with a kick to my already wonky ankle made me pretty PO'D Nothing physical, but a few F sharps came out of my mouth ....what the F are you doing?... etcThis might not seem like anything big to some of you but I am a pacifist trying to follow the Buddhist path. Not good!!!!!
Richard
Ah it frustrates me too man, I work hard on keeping myself together, I've had to deal with quite a few long-term morons in my life who you just have to get along with. And I hate it when they grind me down and make me crazy, because I pride myself on being reasonable, so when I feel adrenaline pumping, I feel like a failure because I let them get me to that point, and I know that feeling that way doesn't solve anything really. On the bright side, I'm sure he deserved the telling off you gave him.
JW
yeah, it's a terrible feeling isn't it?I actually found myself wondering what it would feel like to clock him one.I really don't like sinking to that level but I'm only human I guess
Trev
Feeling anger is okay, showing it, and worse, acting on it is not. It is so hard sometimes to contain oneself. I had a similar situation happen to me a month ago - I had a rib broken by a guy who kicked me while I held my glove out to touch gloves at the beginning of a sparring bout. I didn't know he broke my rib when it happened but it was a cheap shot, and it hurt. I was angry, but I had a "grasshopper" moment. I decided to not let him see my pain and instead, just beat him soundly, respectfully and within the rules (kickboxing rules, which allow sound beatings ). After I had xrays I was angry again. I haven't been able to fight in a month, and I won't be able to for at least another month. I took my frustrations out on punching bags a few times, which actually is like taking it out on myself, because I worked myself to total exhaustion. Then I felt okay about my karma. And I know the cheapshot guy's karma will take care of him. I never even had words with him about it, and I see him at the gym all the time. This was the first time I've been able to contain myself to this extent and it feels very rewarding, in a Buddhist kind of way. Most martial arts schools would prescribe a similar reaction. So, your reaction wasn't so bad, JW, you could have done much worse than a few terse words and you didn't. But more importantly, you acknowledge and dislike your reaction. That's the part that eludes most people these days.
JW
Thank you Trev! I'm pretty much over it now but I do have concerns for other players in the league.I truly feel an obligation to contact the league regarding this player and the general escalation of overly agressive play. It's just a matter of time before a serious injury occurs. I have a personal motto "DO THE RIGHT THING"seems to me this would be the correct action. Trev
Yeah, if you think the other player's actions warrant it. I played soccer from the age of 5 to 18, then quit after half a season of men's league because of the brutal checking and fighting. I'm not a big guy, so some of those checks sent me flying, and the refs were too afraid of the players to discipline them. If the league had done something, I might have kept playing. If your league is getting rough, might be a good thing to report foul play. Maybe others will follow your example and you can just get on with playing the game. It's sad to see a great sport like soccer marred by a few idiots.
JW
I couldn't agree more! It's almost like the hockey mentality has invaded soccer. When I was a kid playing soccer it was almost unheard of to have a parent yelling at the referee.I'm absolutely shocked at what it's like at games now. If only kids could be taught more of the skills and less of the "run hard, tackle hard" style. I may end up playing with a group of older guys I know of who get together once a week just for fun. JW
My son's epidemic of injuries.....Well, he's done it again.... another cast It's been quite a year for Quinn.Less than a year ago, we were on vacation in Mexico and less than 30 minutes after arriving at the resort he manages to run into a tree. (turned a corner while looking back for his sister) I was there within 15 seconds and he already had a massive goose egg on his forehead and blood coming from his lip. We were pretty lucky actually. He took a few stitches and just a big nasty goose egg and black eyes. There just happened to be a doctor on site at the time (thank goodness). We came very close to having to get an ambulance but his pupils started reacting after a while. Scary stuff! Two months later, Quinn dislocates his thumb while playing around with his sister. He actually popped it back in himself before we got there but apparently it was aiming at an unnatural angle. Turns out he also had a buckle fracture in the lower thumb area. Casted for 6 weeks. Last week, playing Red Rover at school....... hurt his wrist and had ligament damage and growth plate damage. Another cast...same arm.AAAAARRRGGHHH! The scary thing is that he's a skateboarding fanatic and we haven't seen a serious injury from that yet. Anyone got some extra bubble wrap???? As long as the association doesn't turn you off the diet.... I still associate Bigbwii with the fruitarian diet. I always marvel over how difficult it must be to maintain a fruitarian diet with family gatherings, restaurants, work functions.... Wow!!!!
