The Great Purge has begun!

Howdy All,

Tonight I'm starting to clean up the member list by deleting spammers & unused usernames. This will be an ongoing process & will make it easier to locate people on the memberlist - probably other cool stuff too. For now, the main difference folks are likely to notice is that the "registered users" counter will mostly be going down instead of up.

Now ya know & knowing is half the battle!

Thanks loveliberate!

That is the first thing I noticed this morning, less total spam members Of course I checked for fun since we talked quite a bit about it yesterday. I'll help out a bit as well. I'm sure I can knock out a dozen or two a day, sometimes more. It's a big project, but it will be nice when it's all sorted out.

Just don't delete me!

I thought we decided you'd be the first to go!!!

Ok, we'll keep you around for a while.

The point of this is to remove the spam members who just sign up and don't do anything. I just ignored them for a while because they weren't posting anything and it wasn't really an issue as far as I could tell. It also takes a lot of time to remove them if dozens of spam members join per day. I just couldn't keep up.

But now that we have multiple Admins, we should be able to handle this al ot better. Now I see that one problem that it creates is that when you look on the memberlist, it is hard to find people you're looking for in a certain region or whatever because there are an extra 3,000+ spam members clogging up the list!

It is long overdue, but we'll slowly pick away at it and clean this place up. We won't be removing any actual members, so no worries there.

I saw the title of this thread, and was afraid it was going to be another bathroom topic.

It'll be nice to have the memberlist cleaned up. I was looking through it one day to see who else here was in/near Houston... and kind of cringed at some of the names I saw. And how many.

Thank you admins!

Yeah, this will be a good thing. And the only reason I didn't get to it before is because I'm working like 3 jobs and I'm involved in way more projects than I should be. I use the forum as a way to relax. I post a lot, but it's my only down time. I'm busy most of the time and can't always get to it.

I'm happy loveliberate has offered to take care of it. He also lives down the road, so we have the opportunity to work together in person quite a bit.

We'll get things cleaned up around here, just understand that it takes quite a while and we'll chip away at it as we can.

Thanks!

love i'm available if you need some backup

ditto. If there's anything I can do to help, let me know.

There may be some settings that can be changed that'll make it a bit harder for spammers to sign up in the first place, too. I forget what it's called, but if you PM me, I'll find out for you.

Yeah, loveliberate and I were talking about that and searching in the Admin panel for ways to limit certain things when registering, such as not allowing websites to be listed.....which most spammers do.

We weren't successful in finding that option, and I'm always very careful on the admin panel since I don't know much about computers and these types of forums in general.

Right now I think the two of us will tackle it and see how far we get. The process of totally removing members is fairly simple but I like to go over it with people in person just so we're on the same page and understand how to do it correctly, etc.

Thanks for all the offers and we'll see how it goes.

I'm taking on two more website projects in the near future (I know, I'm dumb) so there may be a need for more admins in the future. But for now, everyone on this forum makes it so easy to be the one running it, for the most part, everything is smooth sailing.

I really need to pay more attention. I learnt last week that you can see whose using the forum at the same time as you, and now this morning I have learnt you can search the member list ...

I will look out for more "lesson of the board" each day

When you visit this summer I'll show you all the secrets I can show everyone the behind the scenes stuff. It's not too exciting but it's kind of cool too.

Don't worry, we won't delete any real members. We're just recycling and cleaning up.

We just lost 200 members! Thanks loveliberate! We're now under 4,000 total.

We actually only have about 700, so it will be quite a small group when all the spam is removed. But then, we'll all be able to search the memberlist very easily.

woooohooo!

I'm having a lot of fun with this!

One area where you can really see a difference already is one the first page of the member list. When I first started there would be 1 or 2 folks who'd actually posted surrounded by a bunch of people who'd been on here since 1969 without a single post.

Give it a day or 2 & that page will be trimmed down to a great list of our oldest & most active members!
