  1. I don't think so - in fact, apples are referred to as "nature's toothbrush" If you're eating just fresh fruit & veggies, I believe that the fiber in them naturally cleans your teeth. I know my mouth felt super deluxe clean after a few days of just fruit & lightly steamed veggies. I still brushed, of course, and recommend brushing... I just felt like my toothbrush didn't have to work as hard. If you're also eating bread and other processed foods that leave a sticky film on your teeth, then you get fruit sugars stuck in that goo, then it might cause a problem. (If you eat clean for a few days, then eat some bread... you'll really notice the film I'm talking about.) Dried fruits are well known to cause problems. The advice I've read is to avoid them, rehydrated them before consuming to reduce the stickiness, or to be sure and brush ASAP afterwards.
  2. I made raw almond milk! Flavored with some vanilla and agave... YUM! And, in case anyone was wondering, it really is as easy as SmartMonkey Ani makes it look in her video.
  3. Hi Ryan! I wasn't vegan when I got here either. You'll find lots of support here to make it an easier transition, if/when you decide to become vegan. Welcome.
  4. I think your body will tell you what it needs, all you need to do is listen and follow.
  5. They aren't due until April 17th this year (instead of the 15th, like usual) so you've got some extra time. As you might've guessed, I'm still in the "procrastination" stage of doing mine. For a single dude with no dependents, it shouldn't be too difficult or time consuming. Unless you're filing self-employed, then it'll be slightly more of a pain. The hardest part is actually getting all the papers together and sitting down to do it - because it's kind of boring. One good thing about Texas = no state income tax. All I have to deal with is the Federal one.
  6. Sort of. Lots of stuff going on, lots of big changes, and lots of chaos. I'm still moving towards raw, but instead of being on the "highway to raw" it's more like I'm on the little windy bike path that follows alongside the highway. And I'm walking. I busted a knife yesterday. The HEB (grocery store) by where I live has a sign that says "young coconuts" but I've yet to actually see any in stock. But they did have these weird white coconuts that were all fuzzy on the outside, like a brown coconut. So, for lack of a better plan, I decided to take one home and see what was in it. When I tried to bust it open with the knife and technique I use for the young coconuts, it didn't work. And I broke the knife. BAD IDEA! In fact, there is still a big chunk of my knife embedded in that stupid coconut. For some reason, my tools are still at my old place, so I can't just bust it with a hammer. For several minutes, I considered dropping it off my 3rd story balcony and collecting the remains from the sidewalk below, but for the sake of my downstairs neighbor's I abandoned that idea. So much for my spinach/cilantro/coconut soup. That makes an interesting mental picture! Sounds about like my first experience, except instead of your "I'm the Master" mantra, I had a nonstop stream of obscenities coming out of my mouth. And I never did quite get into that first one, either... You can eat the meat and the water from a young coconut. I've had a couple that were so young, it was mostly water inside... that was weird. The meat is good for making raw puddings or for making smoothies or soups nice and creamy. Or for just stuffing in your face - it's good like that too.
  7. Well, you could pretend to be sick or come up with some excuse not to attend... but the decision to become vegan shouldn't have to also be a decision to miss out on social celebrations. You also shouldn't have to bring a cake to your own party. I think you should definitely approach the party planners ASAP, to avoid any awkward situations at the party. Since you work in a grocery store with a bakery, there's more than one possible easy solution. I'd approach them with a few vegan cake recipes in hand, and let them know that while you'd love a cake, you are unable to eat any of the ones they sell in the store... but that you've got some suitable recipes for them to try. They've got a bakery and all the ingredients right there in the store. If they don't want to do the whole cake vegan, maybe they can make a separate vegan cake or some vegan cupcakes? Or alternatively, maybe they could put together some sort of fruit tray to serve at the party in addition to the cake, so you (and anyone else who doesn't want to eat crap) have an alternative. Whatever they choose to do, the fact that you're presenting them with this dilemma and the opportunity to accomodate a vegan at a party will be a bit of education for them. Much moreso than keeping quiet, for sure.
  8. Same here. Big cities aren't really high on my list of places I want to visit. If it had been a checklist of states, provinces, and countries my results would've been different. (my 0% scores would've still been 0%, though... that'll change someday) And where's the Caribbean in this list, anyway?
  9. Weirdos. I got curious and bought a bag of Goji berries at Whole Foods Market the other day. I hope they have a whole lot of good-for-me stuff in them, because the flavor doesn't impress me much.
  10. Such a cute song. Rasputina did a cover of this song when I saw them in Austin a couple years ago. I think it's on one of their albums, too. I can't find an mp3 right now, but I'm sure there's one out there somewhere.
  11. Welcome, Mathieu! Of all the places I've been, Quebec City and Montreal are two of my favorites.
  12. I was thinking the same thing! Love that pink bike... with flames!!
  13. I like reading about Portland. Some days it makes me freaking jealous, but i still enjoy it. Just for the record, I do like this idea. A lot.
