  1. Bad meat? I know a lot of surpluses go into the school lunch program, but I don't think they'd be allowed to dump bad (as in rotten?) meat. (Though all meat is 'bad' IMO!)
  2. The dairy and meat industries have been providing propaganda (oh, sorry 'educational material" ) to schools for many years. Just like McDonald's they know that if you start kids out wanting certain foods, they are more apt to eat them into adulthood. Funnel cake for breakfast? Isn't that basically fried white flour and sugar? Disgusting!
  3. And who was that other Brutus look-alike that used to try to kick Popeye's behind? (Kind of like on "Bewitched," when the two Darren's looked eerily similar...for those of you old enough to remember!)
  4. Somebody please get rid of that ahem "rooster" post. And there's a suspicious one here as well, asking our advice about some company (sneaky way of advertising, IMO).
  5. They can round down, so if each serving has less than .5 gm, they can say it has "0" (same with some things that claim to have no calories, or be 'trans fat free' : as an aside, if you are looking to avoid trans fats, as we should all be, look at the ingredients list for partially hydrogentated or hydrogenated oils, even if the label says 'trans fat free').
  6. A lot of what tastes "good" in modern society is based on habit and the availability of foods high in sugars and simple carbs (even root veggies like carrots and beets have been hybridized to make them much sweeter than they were originally). You can get used to healthier foods (and there are a lot that taste really good!), and might even find at some point that foods you used to think tasted 'good' seem too sweet and/or artificial tasting.
  7. Isinglass: 1 : a semitransparent whitish very pure gelatin prepared from the air bladders of fishes (as sturgeons) and used especially as a clarifying agent and in jellies and glue
  8. I just remembered an incident about 18 years ago, when I was at a party with a bunch of grad students in my department. One of my office mates brought her husband, whom I'd never met, and introduced us. He said something like "Oh, so your the vegetarian?" like he'd just been introduced to a child molester. Then he proceeded to make some crack about hunting or whatever: it was a while ago, and something quite forgetablle, but I won't forget the stupidity of it, or the way he acted like he had to defend himself against me, as if just the fact I was veg*n was a threat to him. And isn't it nice to be reduced to being "the veg*n"? As if that's all one is (even though it is an important part of who we are, I think non-veg*ns take it as a way to diminish us, instead of seeing it as something that makes us more...more compassionate, more reasoned...)
  9. When I travel, I take a stock of vegan meal-replacement bars with me, and get fresh produce on site. Also, you can find vegan options in Middle Eastern, Mexican and Chinese restaurants (though I admit, the latter can get pretty monotonous: I was in Kansas City for two days (beef capital of the US!) and ended up in the same Chinese restaurant both days (eating pretty much the same thing!)
  10. Sounds scary! Could you be lacking Vitamin D? Minerals that are necessary for good bone formation?
  11. Sounds to me like she had a knee-jerk reaction, as if she felt she had to defend herself. I really don't know why people say assinine things like that.
  12. How processed are these? And what is Erythritol? I've heard of Xylitol.
  13. So, one with a good rep. One with a mixed rep. And two with bad reps! She is adorable! I agree that the problem isn't the dogs, it's the people who raise them to be mean. Any dog can go either way, perhaps some more easily than others. I know that some cities have an automatic euthanize policy for pit bulls. I think it's the 'owners' who should be euthanized in most cases. At our shelter, there have been pits or other bad-rep breeds that come in from time to time. Usually, there's a scumbag or two wanting to adopt them, but they quickly lose interest when the shelter says the dogs have to be spayed/neutered before adoption.
  14. I'm not sure if Goji and Wolfberries are the same (some say they are, other say that Goji are best, because they are wild growing in Tibet, and Wolfberries are from elsewhere in China and are sometimes cultivated), but Goji taste kind of like a cross between a dried cherry and a dried cranberry.
  15. I am allergic to poison ivy (not just the run-of-the-mill, "I rub against it and my leg breaks out" reaction, but a systemic reaction, where I can rub against it with my foot, and break out anywhere (arms, torso, face). This summer, I had two outbreaks, both ended up on my face. I tried to go the 'let it take its course' route and avoid Prednisone, but when I ended up looking like a burn victim, with flaking scales of dead skin on my face, with no sign of it abating after 1 1/2 weeks, I finally caved. If you have a systemic reaction, it can show up anywhere, and, according to some literature that comes with an OTC scrub/lotion, lasts about 4 weeks (and the author of the info, some dermatologist PhD guy who wrote an entire book on the subject), most courses of steroids don't last long enough, and it can come back worse than ever after you are done taking them. Also, most of the time, one's reaction to poison ivy increases with exposure. Wish I had known that years ago, when I picked PI from my yard barehanded (I washed up immerdiately after I had pulled it, and had no ill effects). The 'red around the mouth' part of your post makes me wonder if you aren't allergic to something you ate/are eating?
  16. He can also try to be as 'small' as possible, maybe sitting (even on the floor) instead of standing, when they meet.
  17. According to www.dynamicgreens.com , it may not be detox at all, but the presence of molds (of course, they are a commercial site, selling their own flash-frozen, outside-grown wheatgrass juice...which by the way tastes delish!...so they have a reason to diss other manufacturers' grass.
  18. My own pirate joke: Did you hear about the pirate movie for adults? It's rated "Arrrrr," matey!
  19. His story just broke my heart! But I'm hoping it will have a happy ending! It's amazing how forgiving animals can be after enduring so much hatefulness from "humans." Give him a big hug and a kiss from me when you meet him! Hope the drive home will be with a new family member! And speaking of animal rescues: Bigbwii, do you still have the kitten you rescued?
  20. Technically, no. Brewer's yeast is a by-product of the brewing industry, and is usually brownish and somewhat bitter-tasting. Nutritional yeast is specifically grown on molasses (usually) with the intent of being used as a supplement. Usually, it also has B12 added to it. Nutritional yeast can come in flake or powder form, tastes somewhat cheesy, and is tasty on popcorn.
  21. I think that's a good idea. And my brain isn't functioning well this early in the morning, so could you write up your workout schedule again, this time in order! Day 1, Day 2.. If shoulder or tricep work is too close (depending on the individual) to chest work, it can cause you to go down in weights, since the front shoulder and triceps are synergists for chest.
  22. I think pull-ups and chin-ups are probably the best all-round back exercises. And doing these and some type of row (which works the back in a different way) make a good combo.
  23. Don't forget date sugar as well: made solely from dried, powdered dates. It tastes especially good in baked goods that have tropical flavors (coconut, pineapple) or are a bit more substantial (coffee cakes) because of its distinctive flavor.
  24. Maybe because they are high glycemic? Also, root veggies are some of the most hybridized foods around, to create versions that are much sweeter than their wild counterparts. Some nutritionists recommend avoiding them or at least severely limiting them.
