  1. 455 Pound Deadlift Today Today should have been Squat Day, but I have been obsessed with deadlifting this week and don't really like squats anyway. So after a very stressful morning, I decided to do what I wanted not what I needed. The 365 went up so easily, but I still had a hard time deciding to go for a new PB. I was still feeling Monday's lifts in my back muscles, but went for it anyway. My liftoff has become really solid and the 455 came off the ground easily! I struggled on the lockout as I did with 435 on Monday, but I refused to give up and locked it out. The grip in my right hand was starting to fail, I made it just in time! I must have been quite the sight, grunting and straining. I even saw a wad of spit fly straight up in to the air! Deadlifts - 5x135 pounds 3x225 1x315 1x365 1x455 New PB by 20 pounds! (206.4kg) 1x315 to rack the weight. Bench Press - Finished up with a little light benching. 5x135 3x185 1x205 3x1x225 Thanks Jonathan for introducing me to Dinosaur Training, 24 reps for my entire workout. PS Rob, I was wearing my Vegan Bodybuilding tee today!
  2. So do you only accept Genesis and reject the rest of the Old Testament?
  3. I think the main difference here is that your mother doesn't give you one chance and then burn you in a pit of fire for all eternity if you get it wrong. I really think the idea of the god of the bible being a loving and caring god is absolutely absurd. This is the same god who would create homosexuals and then demand that they be stoned to death for being homosexuals. UGH!
  4. You're doing much better than me, maybe I should weigh myself naked. I'm way off the chart by 30 pounds! I'm just a couple of pounds from obese really.
  5. Nice shoulder workout today. Wednesday - Barbel Shoulder Press 10x45 pounds 5x95 4x115 3x125 2x135 1x140 I don't know my max on this exercise, but before today have never done more than 125. Looks like it's time to up the weight! Dumbel Shoulder Press - 10x50 pounds each Barbel Upright Row - 3x5x100 pounds And a little back work... Pull Downs - 5x170 pounds 5x180 5x190 5x200 Hammer Strength Low Row - 12x150pounds
  6. I guess we'll have to agree to disagree about Genesis. It's a short and I believe trivial part of the bible. It's not even particularly interesting and doesn't seem to fit in well with the rest of the book. To take a few sentences from this about god giving us plants and seeds to eat and decide that god wanted us to live in a vegan eden is way too much of a stretch for me. Why are only a few select people abled to read these few sentences and understand the true meaning? Why then did god neglect to mention this again in the other 99% of the bible? Even many Christians that I have known consider the book of Genesis to be at best a fairy tale version of creation. With only a tiny fraction of a percent of christians willing to accept the genesis arguments, I would guess your chances of convincing this atheist, agnostic, hindu, buddhist bunch are slim. Best of luck Nat. I think I'll try to leave this thread alone before I manage to offend even more people.
  7. Well, you were almost 100 reps in to your routine! Not to mention 40# dumbels are heavy. Fantastic bodybuilding Renee! Your biceps have almost caught up with Jonathan.
  8. http://www.weightchart.org/ This particular chart seems to show up on a lot of web sites. I believe it originally comes from MetLife life insurance company. They determined the weights based on longevity for each height. Looks like you are rock bottom for ideal weight, but still on the chart. One major problem in this country is that everyone is used to seeing fat people. They see someone who is average or on the bottom of the chart and they think something is wrong. In fact it's quite the opposite! If you are eating when you are hungry and maintaining your current weight, I would say you are fine!
  9. Talk about being lumped together. Jonathan and I are in fact two distinct individuals with separate opinions living on opposite sides of the pond. We agree on many things, but not necessarily this one. I personally don't really see Christians as a roadblock to animal rights. They are no more of a nuiscance than anyone else really. As far as studying the bible? I gave it about a year of proper study and found it rather lacking in substance. I found Hinduism has much more to offer in understanding who is god, who are we and our place in the universe, practical advice for day to day life and social structure. By comparison the bible is a first grade reader compared to a great novel. As far as god is concerned, I see no reason to believe that he/she would have a problem with eating meat. If you believe in a creator, then that creator made numerous carnivores. Clearly there is no concern at all for one creature dying a painful death for the pleasure of another. In fact the god of the bible seems to enjoy bringing death and misfortune to both humans and animals through disease, raining fire, insect infestations, floods etc. Jonathan is quite right with one point in particular. EVERY christian faction shares in common one thing. They all think they have found the correct interpretation of the bible. Vegetarian christians are no different, in fact they have to stretch the bible further than anyone to support their claims. In fact discussing religion on a public forum does invite such criticism. Perhaps a little more listening and conversation and a little less hammering would yield better results.
  10. Damn, I was hoping they would make those vegan!!!!! You just made my day!
  11. Thanks for the encouragement Rob and the cool shirt! Feeling unbelievably strong again today! But, where is a spotter when you need one? The benching area in my gym is a good 10 meters from the rest of the free weights. I wanted to go for a new PB, could have easily knocked out 113kg. Not a soul even within shouting distance other than two old ladies on treadmills. Bollocks! Tuesday - Bench Press 5x135 pounds 5x155 5x185 3x205 1x215 1x225 1x235 Felt more like 200. Could have easily pressed 250, but couldn't try it with no spotter. I know I would get afraid of the bar and screw it up. Oh well, there will be another day. Finished up with 8x185. Dumbel Incline Press - 4x75pounds each Dumbel Flye - 10x35pounds each Tricep Press Down - 2x10x100 pounds I feel like I'm making progress for the first time in months.
  12. Sounds a lot like the 10,000 hippies I camped out with last month.
  13. Moving to a Hare Krishna farm for four years. Oops, that was me. Thanks to the guys over at Vegan Fitness for kicking my ass last year and making me vegan again.
  14. I have one "very christian" friend who is always after me to eat meat. "Just try it and you'll like it" he says. He says he understands how I feel, but "you just can't think about it". "It seems bad but god says it's okay", so just go ahead and eat it.
  15. All Clif products are vegan, but they aren't labeled or marketed as vegan. I assume it is an attempt not to limit their market share, which seems to be working. They have a very wide distribution including wal-mart and most large grocery chains. In this country at least, people will not buy products labeled vegan or vegetarian. They think that means the product is only for vegans. Stupid people really, but then again they are meat eaters.
  16. Yeah man, tell us what you do so we can all have giant pecs.
  17. Yes, my favorite bar serves vegan chili.
  18. Okay, finally gotten motivated to post a training journal here. I matched my Personal Best on the deadlift today, so thought it would be a good time to share. There is a good 8 months of history on Vegan Fitness if anyone cares. This log is just going to be a mirror of that log which I will continue to maintain. http://www.veganfitness.net/forum/viewtopic.php?p=51806 Deadlift day in style! Lifted 435 pounds for the first time since I first managed it 4 months ago on April 13th. It went up really slowly and overloaded my lower back just a wee bit. I'll back off for a few weeks and then it's over the top with a new PB! Monday - Deadlifts 5x135 pounds 4x225 3x315 1x365 1x435 1x315 to rack the weight Lat Pull Down, Wide Grip - 6x170 5x180 4x190 3x200 2x210 Hammer Strength Low Row - 12x150 pounds with slow negatives Machine Bicep Curls - 6x100 5x110 4x120 3x130 Dumbel Hammer Curls - 10x35 pounds each Barbel Curls - 10x70 pounds
  19. One very positive thing in the UK for drinkers and everyone really is the public transit system. You can get almost anywhere at almost any time of day without need of driving. Most pubs that I saw there did not have parking lots like they do in the US. You don't see the pub closing and masses of drunks heading out to their cars. Really cuts down on the drunk driving problem.
  20. Agreed! I appreciate your point of view Dan, glad to have you on the board. I only have one final thought on B12. I hope that all of us in our outreach work will make sure new vegans get as much information as possible. Everyone should have the opportunity to make an informed decision on such an important health issue.
  21. yes, because that is the way most people who drink do it. Most people are not moderate like you are. You are making the mistake of thinking everyone practices the same habits you do. I really don't think you know "most people who drink". I would guess that most people who drink do so in moderation, don't drive cars after and harm noone. Perhaps that's why you aren't aware of them? An excellent summary.
  22. So? Do you really believe that both Vegan Outreach and renowned vegan physician Michael Klaper MD are anti-vegan? Did you read any of the info on their links that I posted? Therefore, I feel that when people claim B12 absolutely must be supplemented, they are doing a disservice to the vegan diet. If our diet cannot be sustained simply by eating what God has provided in nature, without any refinement by human hands, that it cannot be man's intended diet. If it's not "man's intended diet", then it's no good? What if your theory is incorrect and the scientific evidence is right? Should we abandon veganism? Should we also abandon clothing and shelter? Clearly if the creator had intended for us to have them, we wouldn't have to make them? I give up. We definitely have very different world views. I am more interested in science and theories that offer evidence and proof. Actually, I can see that you value evidence and proof too, just of a different kind than I do. The good thing is that we are all vegan, on that we can agree. I even hope that you are right and we don't need any supliments. My friend Oak in Scotland has been raw food vegan for 10 years and does not supliment. He has his B12 levels tested regularly and they are fine. One person doesn't prove anything, but perhaps there is hope. Of course as Daywalker pointed out, the average vegan diet is far from "natural". How many times have most of us gone a day without eating any fruits or vegetables at all? Even when we find the time and money, most of us don't have access to fresh raw organic produce.
  23. Don't worry, we still love you even if you aren't hairy.
  24. Just check the labels on Tom's, they do use bee products in some of their stuff.
