  1. Richard-

That's amazing, but what is Silent Hill?

And Robert, I will have to try the stuff, but I could probably do that, although it looks like I will be starting a 9-5 Monday, so I may be available weekends?

And loveliberate, I notice plenty of pristine land from the plane, but it got pretty patchy in parts as well, as did the coast.

Odidnetne, does Pennsylvania have a coast?? Maybe a few riverbeds

  2. Wait a minute........you're in Oregon now?????

Yeah, my lease was up and I thought I would try something new, I am in Eugene. As first I was a bit unsure, but it is growing on me, and I'm staying at an awesome place about 5 miles out of the town, very beautiful. Tons of vegetarians and vegans too, I met one guy on a temp job, and our manager recommended we go to McDonald's for lunch, we both sort of looked at eachother uneasily, and it turned out in the ride to go eat elsewhere, he was a vegetarian too. Very cool.

Anyway, I'd love to check out Portland, I have a cousin up there, so it is on the agenda, I will keep you posted. Plus Demetri Martin has a show there in November!

  3. On a random note, I somehow moved to Oregon 3 weeks ago. I may go and may stay, but anyway, following are some pics I took of the coast by Yachats.

  4. For me, I like some fruits, eat bananas regularly, and sometimes kiwis, citrus, and recently bought plums- But I find when I eat a lot of the the tangy/acidic fruits, it kind of hurts my teeth- I went to a dentist recently and all was well, so I'm not sure, anyone have any suggestions on this? And don't say brush your teeth, I do that fairly often

Another reason I don't eat more fruit is that I can't find organic varieties, any thoughts on that? I wonder if one eats 10 servings of non-organic fruits every day, if that would be a problem- I have read that fruits and vegetables tend to have higher detectable levels of pesticides than grains/legumes-

    Thanks,

    Joel

  5. Sorry Guys, but potato chips are one of the worst foods for you! It's not just the fat and salt; it's the acrylamides which form from frying in oil and even baking, unfortunately. And starches are the worst!

    How about baked corn chips?

So wait, if even baking potatoes forms toxins, does that mean baked potatoes are out too? Or is it just something about potatoes and oil, and if so, is this all oil, or just high saturated and transfat oil?

    Thanks,

    Joel

  6. The VeganWares Henry's are excellent dress shoes, but order half a size smaller than usual, they are from australia.

You can find them here- http://www.mooshoes.com/

As for the sneakers, New Balance told me that most all commercial athletic shoes use animal-derived glue, but many will have synthetic materials instead of leather. You can ask the salesman, and here is a list of New Balances without leather, though I think it leaves out some of their newer models:

"Thank you for your interest in New Balance!

ALL of the following models are made with synthetic materials.

However. please note that we do use different types of glues

depending on what is available. Also be aware that some of our

glues will contain animal products as many glues do. Even though

the shoe contains all synthetic leather does not mean it will

be completely vegan. We do not mix real and synthetic leathers

on any shoe. It is either leather or synthetic period.

  7. And apparently NewsCorp owns The New York Post (shudder) too... which wikipedia says Murdoch turned into the den of arch neoconservativism that it is today... check out their coverage of Al Gore's Movie... and they seem to cover nothing but the most awful events and sensationalism that happens in the city too, the few times I have picked up the paper- And it's not even conservative, conservatives have principles...

I wonder how he will turn MySpace into the Fox News Channel...

  8. I like the hubble pictures

So I am a dork, but here are a few- And there were 2 Hubble documentaries, absolutely jawdropping montages with atmospheric music, so incredible. You can download the torrents at http://www.mvgroup.org if they are accepting new users-

  9. PS, here is my message-

    Dr. von Eschenbach,

Surely the US would do well to follow the European Union and limit cruel testing on primates and other animals that are fully able to suffer and feel pain. It is deplorable that a stronger species should feel justified to enslave and abuse the feeble creatures who happen to live on the same planet.

There is no excuse for the abuses and torture that research companies perpetrate in the US, when perfectly viable alternatives exist. And where those alternatives do not exist, we must search them out.

The 1986 EU Council Directive on Animals Used for Research states:

"2. An experiment shall not be performed if another scientifically satisfactory method of obtaining the result sought, not entailing the use of an animal, is reasonably and practicably available.

3.... In a choice between experiments, those which use the minimum number of animals, involve animals with the lowest degree of neurophysiological sensitivity, cause the least pain, suffering, distress or lasting harm and which are most likely to provide satisfactory results shall be selected...

    4. All experiments shall be designed to avoid distress and unnecessary pain and suffering to the experimental animals."

Please help the US follow those directives and vastly reduce or eliminate animal testing.

    Sincerely,

    Joel M. Berry

  10. So maybe someone is not on Peta's list, well here is the link to email the FDA's Dr. Andrew C. von Eschenbach on cruel primate testing (I would write your own letter in the form- http://getactive.peta.org/campaign/p2save99?c=p2m18

And here is the FDA Federal Docket comments website, where you can comment on regulations that might effect animals.

    http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/oc/dockets/comments/commentdocket.cfm?AGENCY=FDA

The USDA Food Safety and Inspection dept. has one to- http://www.fsis.usda.gov/Regulations_&_Policies/index.asp

All citizen comments on regulations and laws must be published, you can read the comments too if you search the site, they are usually from agriculture or drug companies, and now and then consumers, and sometimes animal rights suppporters. And you can find out some creepy information in the dockets that the news does not mention, like that the US is allowing frozen poultry to be imported from CHINA now, of all places, in the midst of the avian flu scare. I sent them a comment that the US must first ensure humane handling and slaughter in the Chinese plants (as if that is possible anyway). Of course, writing to your US Representatives and Senators is most important as well, because they legislate laws-
